New terror threat against cruise ships.

I would think a more effective way would not be to try to hijack the ship, but rather drive up with a "Ryder truck" type boat like in Oklahoma City.

 

They could even masquerade as a stranded ship and do the same thing when the ship pulls in close.

 

Not to scare everyone, but I think the ships should some have kind of policy in place not to let other boats get within 100 yards of the ship until its checked out safe.

Not me - Leave on my Med cruise in August. I flew and went on a Hawaii cruise right after 9/11. Not letting terrorists stop me from living my life.:D

No but we all gave up our fourth amendment rights just to fly.:(

Or fly a privately owned plane loaded with explosives into the side of a ship 150 miles out. Hard to protect against every threat.

 

Doesn't change my cruising plans in the least. Brave men and women from all over the world are working to find out and deter these type attacks. Best wishes to them and their families.

Given the number of passengers on say a Royal Carribean or Carnival cruise, I would think they would most likely try hijacking one of the smaller exclusive luxury cruises. Similiar to the Somali hijackers.

I agree. It will take a heck of alot of people to take over a cruise ship - lots more then it took to take down a airplane. Personally I dont see it happening. Look at all the news stories about how common every day people help out during a disturbance on planes now...people are more apt to step up now and help. We are no longer complacent. We are more viglilant.

I work for a airline and we have had incidents onboard of people getting drunk or wigging out and trying to do stupid stuff. Prior to 9/11 passengers just sat and watched the events unfold as the crew tried to deal with the problem passenger. Post 9/11 usually the biggest and buffest passengers jump into action and open a can of "whoop a$$" on the misbehaving passenger.

 

09/11 changed all of us and people arent as likely to sit idly by while a terrorist decides their fate. The greatest example of that was the heros aboard United Flight 93.

But a knife is for CQC and when your enemy is capable of firing 200-800 rpm from a distance you have to be alot more strategic/ tactical;)

But with the element of surprise its definately a plausible scenario:D

Why? I was on a Med cruise last year and I was never afraid. I was more worried about pickpockets in Barcelona than I was terrorists.

Did you see on the port Everglades Fleet week cam last weekend At least three US Coast guard boats guarded the war ships in port 24 hrs a day. They wont get away with that again.When we took our 04 cruise their were four Coast Guards men on the ship and two boats as an escort that picked them up before the VZ. bridge. Haven't seen that after the 04 cruise. Even tho their were CG boats around the port.

I do believe in freedom. Freedom of speech, the right to bear arms or arm bears, but I also don't think about pushing the envelope. I don't try to "break rules", I don't hang around rough neighborhoods, cruisers do take chances, so many times I read about people bragging about smuggling on the booze, and why could a terrorist not smuggle on something too? Germs? Flammable material? etc? And then we get all "pissy" because we get caught-what part of this do you not get? For any rule that you've learned to break, you are letting others learn the same thing. So I don't get the pushing to see how far I can go. I am then not thinking about my fellow mankind.

When we cruise into the ports like Cozumel there is a naval ship that accompanies the cruise line in. I have read that while in port, there are divers that stay near the ship, and check out the ships before they leave port. In all ports. I think we should all be observant, watch our fellow man a little more than usual, when we are in unusual places. The thing that scares me about religious zealots is that they are not scared to die because they believe they will be with their God, I'm just not so much in a hurry to see mine yet:o.

So true. My husband and I used to work with Todd Beamer's father...small, small world. This would not stop me from cruising.

Anything like this is always possible. It can be in our own backyard.

DH was deployed 8 yrs ago to Iraq, 8 of his men did not return, 35 were injured in terrorist's morter attacks and he lost one of his best friends. He was slightly injured in another small accident. He has been stranded in the desert, traveled hundreds of miles in open desert day in and day out, Fallujah bombings, etc. I had fear in the beginning, but not anymore. Compared to this, worrying about them boarding a ship seems small beans.

You cannot live in fear of what may happen, but you must stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Just another reason to bring binoculars.;)
