Perry Grant - The Beat Goes On!

Just back of Eclipse. The Sky Lounge was "hogged" by Perry and his acolytes to the detriment of everyone else. It seems like the 14 night cruises have a demographic profile which prefers this type of "entertainment". The sad thing is that by 1130pm they had all gone to bed and the rest of us were left wondering where the entertainment was. The Sky lounge hasthe only reasonable dance floor on the ship and was wasted on Perry and his following. Better that they did two shows (early and late) in Michaels than penalise the rest of us

How is any of this Perry's fault?

Huge Perry Fan here:) AND really looking forward to upcoming Eclipse cruise this Saturday.

Of our last three Sclass X cruises (sans Perry) the evening dancing was scheduled in the Atrium/Foyer NOT the Sky Lounge - so don't be blaming Perry for lack of dancing in the Sky Lounge.

We saw Perry on the Consellation in Michael's Lounge - jam packed to the rafters every night, standing room only - so I applaud that he is in a larger space.

Dancing - is there really such a demand on the Eclipse? I have rarely seen dance floors packed with 300 passengers (number which apparently go to see Perrys show)

I too like to go dancing but to be really honest it tends to be the same people who dance and there are not a great number. Don't get me wrong, I do think there should be dance areas but does it need to be such a large area?

It was noted that at the end of Perrys show passengers leave to go to bed. This would then be a great time for the dancers.

As previously written, I attended Perry's shows @ evening while on my l4 day Eclipse cruise. I would like to point out that as a "single", I too miss a dance venue...and herein lies my suggestion. The Qsar lounge is ALWAYS empty..I can see that as an appropriate dance area if X changes the decor, does whatever with the DJ and have contemporay dancing there. This is my 2nd cruise (first on Equinox) & on both cruises, the Qusar "disco" lounge was empty. Let's face it, X does not cater to the younger or single groups, so why not make this a place for couples to dance instead of or in addtion to the foyer? It makes no sense to criticize Perry because he is in the Sky Lounge just because you don't prefer his type of entertainment. He must be doing something right as many seniors are thumping their feet, singing along & clapping, smiling, etc to his tunes. Get a grip!!!!!! Sailormateforyou:)

Hi Sally. My brain has just made the connection! Hope you are doing well. We don't have anything against Perry although we drifted in a couple of times and found it very repetetive. We did miss having the live band up in Sky after dinner though and also a resident DJ playing dance music into the late hours (everything from 50's through to present day). Celebrity just seem to have fallen flat and we felt the entertainment was poorly organised. It used to be that there was a late show after second dinner but this almost never happens now. We found that coming out of late dinner was like coming to a ghost town on many evenings. We sat and listend to the Jazz band in the Ensemble on a number of evenings after 11 because there was nothing else. We got chatty with the band because there were so few people (often less than 10). We have always booked year after year and this is the first time we did not re-book. We just felt that they are not making any effort and when we spoke to the CD, she did discuss but mostly just made excuses. I think that Celebrity have tried to cut some corners and have cut their nose off here. If we wanted good accommodation and good food with not much going on in the evening we would go to a hotel. they seem to have missed the point of why so many people cruise.

Celebrity entertainment have been poor for a few years now. I have been writing comments after every cruise, but seems it doesn't matter anymore.

I think the only comments they will concern about if it is about money making venue, otherwise - they don't care. They want us to spend the whole evening at the specialty restaurants, or spend time at the bar, in the casino or shops - Celebrity consider that Entertainment!

A very astute observation. The alternatives for evening entertainment is very limited. I can understand some of the frustration expressed by people looking for something to do and finding Perry's style not to their taste. Unfortunately I believe that choice will be cut back even more and news coming from other ships in the fleet are no better. We are currently re-evaluating our own bookings for next year and we are looking at alternatives. If you know of a good hotel with some good food and some activities at a competitive price, let us know. ;)

While Celebrity is still our favorite cruise line, we find that the entertainment on Princess is much better & more varied, even though their theaters can't hold a candle to Celebrity's C or M class theaters. Princess will offer a lounge act in addition to the theater offering. We find that Princess offers a very similar cruise experience to Celebrity in pretty much all areas, however, Celebrity feels a bit more comfortable

We LOVEDE Perry on the Constellation and would book an Eclipse ship just to see him. I haven't read all 7 pages of posts--is he on indefinitely? I think I saw something about him going to Millenium?

I have to admit that I have NOT been on Eclipse, but I thoroughly enjoyed Perry's perfomances in Michael's Club on Constellation. :) That venue was FULL almost every night and it did not take away any dance floor venue.

Yes, there IS, most definitely a demand for dancing, on other Celebrity ships like Infinity, Solstice, and Constellation. Been there, seen it! In both the Sky Lounge AND the main lobby ;)

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, it's almost as if Celebrity is PURPOSEFULLY trying to DISCOURAGE IT ??!!??

The cruise directors/entertainment mangers can't possibly be THAT inept/oblivious... Can they??!!??

There are MULTIPLE venues on both S and M class ships that COULD keep almost all of the different age groups happy (as well as ordering more drinks later into the evening/morning!)

I always liked the area where we danced on M class ships in evenings before or after dinner. On S class, I would not like foyer and actually saw some of this on M class ships.

Guess daily dancing is waning. :(

If daily dancing is waining on Celebrity ships, it is NOT for lack of DEMAND by the guests, whether their ages are 25-35 or 55-75. :(

Quasar is the perfect venue for the smaller crowds of younger Celebrity guests but is being utilized so ineffectively it has been deleted on Reflection. The Rendevouz Lounge on M class ships is another space not being utilized effectively.

When there are special shows with the ship's dance troup in the Sky Lounge, the place is ABSOLUTELY PACKED and would remain so MUCH later in the evenings if the DJs would play music appropriate for the demographics.

Even in a venue like the main lobby that is NOT set up with a large dance floor, I have seen a couple of hundred guests of all ages dancing on three different levels of the ship!

There are outstanding hotels and beachfront condos on Marco Island, Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island, Fl. We owned a very nice two bedroom beachfront condo on Estero Island for ten years; and, we loved it. We prefer the condos to hotels due to the size difference and offered facilities. There are a plethora of Canadians in our area, most of whom own their winter residences. Anyhoo, just google it and you may be surprised. The condo we owned was the Caper Beach Club on Ft. Myers beach.

Sad news:mad:

When I was getting off the Eclipse on April 6th. Perry was also getting off to take some things to his home in Florida. We told him we loved his shows and wonderd if he would be on the Eclipse in Dec as we will be sailing again. He said that Celebrity does not want to renew his contract. He was pretty upset about it. He has been with the cruiseline for 10 years. He said that he has had three offers from other cruiselines.

Several independent sources have confirmed that Perry has been offered a new contract since that date.

He was there there April 6-20. We did go one night early the first week, but didn't go back. Times change and yes, Celebrity has to mix things up and change as well. It's not about the people, it's about the business. Tough decisions I'm sure.

Whatever he does, we wish him well.

I just have to ask - just who is Perry Grant, what makes him so special or maybe not - lol as I see there are some "not fans" out there too. Fill those of us in who have never seen him please.

Through the Magic of Google. There are other videos but I think this 1:31 is quite long enough to get a feel.

Now of course, tastes vary and I suspect this would be one of those 'you had to be there' moments. Still, not my cup-o-tea.

Hi Arno,

Just as an add on to your comment, Perry confirmed that he's thrilled to be continuning on with Celebrity, and his new contract begins sometime in September 2013 (I will try to find the exact date - I think it's 9/22/13) - through the March 8th 2014 Eclipse sailing, which ends on 3/22/14.

Are contracts usually only renewed 6 months at a time?

Host Andy - Can you find out if he'll be on for the Feb. 8, 2014 sailing? (I know you said his contract was through March 22 - I just hoped he wouldn't be taking a vacation break in Feb.)

We really missed having a piano player on our last cruise on the Solstice. That is one thing Princess always has and we've come to love these entertainers.

Thanks!

Looks like we will be able to judge the merits of Perry's act for ourselves as we will be on the 22nd September Eclipse cruise.

Looking forward to it.

YEA!!! We are on the Feb 22, 2014 cruise. I was hoping he would still on board. I only wish they could get him back into Michaels Club. The ambience isn't quite the same in the big open bar upstairs.

Thanks Andy!

If you want more dancing try Princess. They always seemed to have dancing venues and different musical entertainment throughout the ship. On our last Princess cruise we had a couple at our dinner table who danced all the time. They had a great time on Princess. What about Holland America?

On Eclipse Qsar had dancing that could have spilled out into the Entertainment Court if there were enough people. Seems to me it was mostly empty when we walked by. We did see people dancing in the Grand Foyer on our way to dinner some evenings but it was only maybe 6 couples. They had dancing classes and a dance competition so it would seem they are trying to responde to the dancing requests but obviously not to everyones liking.

As to Perry Grant, he is not everyones cup of tea. We saw him the first time on Constellation and thought he was great. I laughed and laughed and laughed and I also enjoyed his music. When I saw him on Eclipse I enjoyed him but something seemed different. Not sure exactly what it was but he seemed to be a little more subdued maybe. Sometimes I think the skits (for lack of a better word) were too drawn out. For example the designer dress thing was way too long and maybe if it was the first time you saw it it was funny but I think it detracts from the show. Anyway, we had a good time and will enjoy seeing him again and as usual we learn a lot in that room :p

We just came back from Eclipse and agreed that even Sky lounge has more room, but not enough ambiance as Michael's Club. As most of you know, Perry gets his " juice" from the audience that present, and if there is a sleepy crowd, he has to improvise more. Perry brought us laughter and enjoyment - sorry he had to leave the ship a few days earlier... we had nothing to do at 10...;)
