Excuse me. Did you forget to wash your hands?

Recommended Posts

Ah yes, we have the "clothes police", the "food police" and now the "hand washing police". There are way too many busy bodies!

And for the record, after using the restroom, I use warm water and soap along with the paper towel to avoid touching the door handle on the way out.

Clothes and food don't affect the health of the rest of the ship. Proper sanitation certainly does!

I dare say you have no reason to know the layout of a gentlemen's convenience, but there are distinctly separate items of porcelain for different functions, with no reason to confuse the two.

But of course, there's still the problem of belts. All trouser belts must be covered in norovirus - they're virtually always fastened up before washing your hands, hence they're covered with whatever foul germs you possess. How often are belts sterilised? Not several times a day, that's for sure. How often are belts touched? Frequently - and every time you touch it, you're covering your hands in germs.

Which is one of the many reasons that washing your hands regularly is a good idea, especially before eating.

I don't understand the aversion to soap and water.

Thanks for posting... I was just going to do the same!

BTW... Water temp does not matter. We had this discussion at work (a hospital) a few months back...

Wash please! I don't want your cold, flu, roti, noro viruses!

Amen!! Where I come from and many other places it will get a fist or worse applied to your face. Try it in the restroom of a biker bar sometime! :D

Don't give bikers a bad name, we do wash our hands. Unless you are talking bout the old tv rowdy bikers which is the imagination of the movie world. Germs are real.

Don't attempt to excuse a nasty habit. Doug R., what do you have against one washing their hands after using the laboratory?

On one of my cruises, both DH and I got the norovirus - despite using Purell. We thought we would be okay if used the Purell before and after eating in the MDR, Buffet or gambling in the casino. But we got the virus anyway.

It is not something you would ever want again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Therefore, we are both more diligent about using soap and water and still use the purell on the way in and out of the dining facilities and upon leaving the casino.

That said, I'm still not confrontational about people using soap and water - I should be after having the norovirus - but I'm not. I am however, more careful about what I touch and using the purell.

Not a thing, always wash afterwards myself, except when I happen to be in the restroom with the office militant germophobe, in which case I walk out without washing just to get under his skin after which I immediately go wash my hands in the adjacent office kitchen.

What I am against is the self-appointed people who think it is their God given job to correct the social manners of others.

I have had the norovirus too! It is not fun at all! Spent 10 hours of a cruise very sick. Because of this I now sanitize the cabin before anyone can enter. I spray all door handles, sink, bible, phone, remote, light switches and floor yes the floor with Lysol. I then go back over everything with Clorox wipes. I use my elbow in the elevator, try to avoid stair handles and when possible I ask someone at the buffet to put food on my plate so I do not have to touch the handles. I carry toilet seat covers for my DD when we go ashore. Call me germ crazy but we have been less sick. There are germs and virus everywhere even your shopping cart at the store. Its not just on a ship. Some people are just not as sanitary as others. On one of our last cruises a crew member would hunt you down in the buffet if you didn't use a sanitary wipe before entering. Wish this was more common on other ships.

Wash your hands people!

You can overdo it! Sensible precautions are good but you can get so paranoid that it overcomes your ability to enjoy life. I agree that the ships should be more proactive.

I do the same thing and provide for those traveling in other rooms with me. I also go back over everyday after the steward clean the rooms.

Doug, call it what you want but I have not had a cold not even a running nose in over 15yrs and I work with the public daily.

You're right: if "someone" didn't wash their hands, the odds ARE slim that you would be stricken by norovirus. But ships do not just carry one "someone", they carry thousands. -- and it is because there are enough of those thousands who are careless or lazy that norovirus is a problem. Each of those "someone's" who is educated (or shamed) into cleanliness does improve the chances of the rest of us.

True. It's worth talking about, even if most of us are too afraid to say anything.

How would you suggest the ships could be more proactive than posting signs in all bathrooms (stateroom as well as public) which they already do? Perhaps by mentioning to people who fail to wash their hands that they should? Oh, wait -- you've gone on record as being against that.

It's not social manners, it's public sanitation. Big difference.

Snce when is expecting basic sanitation overdoing anything?

I wish all bathroom doors opened OUT from the bathroom so I can use my shoulder to open the door after washing my hands.

I can't remember which one, but one of the airports I've been recently had arthropod doors that opened automatically on a motion sensor. Great idea.

Speaking of Noro....

You protect yourself when you wash your hands frequently. Always before eating and never put your fingers on your food or in your month. What others do doesn't matter, if you don't put the germs in your mouth you will be ok. It's under your control and you don't have to be watching other's bathroom habits....

You can't eat a sandwich with a knife and fork. Or an apple. Or a packet of crisps. Or a breadstick. Or a hamburger, or fish and chips from a paper, or most fast food, or most sweets, and unless all your drinks come with a straw still in its hermetically sealed packet, one sip will ruin your good work anyway. There's no way round it, if you don't have an inbuilt immunity to norovirus, you're gonna catch it.

It does involve others' habits to the extent that you have to touch the same elevator buttons, hand rails, etc. And, by the way, have you never seen people in front of you touch food items, such as cookies, and then put them back - and handle the same food serving implements, salt and pepper shakers, etc. thatbyounwill have to use?

I find it unbelievable how so many people keep trying to insist that other people's sanitary habits are no business of mine.

For those of you who are so concerned that passengers wash their hands after using the public restroom, how do you handle going through life knowing that most passengers probably don't use the public restrooms, and only use their cabin restrooms and probably still don't wash their hands?

Context please, I was replying to someone who scrubs their entire cabin down with Lysol including the floor and then goes over it again with Clorox wipes. That is a bit much.

Is this a serious question? If you haven't noticed (or been capable of understanding) this thread is about noticing people leaving bathrooms without washing. Get ready: I'll roll your eyes right back to you.
