Breakaway Convince Me

Giorgi-one

...I have basically been told that I am cheap and should find another ship because I am too old and too negative. Remember comments I listed were from member reviews.

I really hope you will enjoy your future cruises. As you have not been on Breakaway and do not intend to go on Breakaway, posting negative stuff about her seems inane.

On the off chance you decide to reflect on this thread before posting on others, here are a few starting thoughts:

If you do not want people to think you are cheap, stop complaining about money. Especially stop complaining about relative small sums of money and common fees, like parking.

If you do not want people to think you are old and cheap, do not mention your senior discounts.

If you do not want perfect strangers to think you are negative, well, don't compose such negative posts. You control the content that seemingly gives readers here a very consistent impression.

Happy cruising.

Enjoy RCI. Sounds like a good fit.

We cruise on many lines. Celebrity is our favorite line but I think I have more cruises on NCL than any other line. My point in last post was to compare mega ships by RCL and NCL. RCL just does a way way better job. Another point. Breakaway sails year round out of NYC and apparently has few if any design features for cold weather.

I did not decide to pass on Breakaway because of parking fee. However if enough people refused to park at the port, the fees would drop in a New York minute. I had many things I considered. Didn't even mention the Mickey Mouse Vibe Club. Holds 80 people and costs $79 for the week. What about the other 4000 people. Allure and Oasis have adult area which covers two decks at the front of the ship. No cost. From what I read Breakaway pool is more like a back yard pool and there are not enough deck chairs on the ship to accommodate those who want them. Point is that RCL does big things in a big way while NCL appears to fall way way short.

You can't compare the mega ships Allure and Oasis to the Breakaway, two different animals, they are 100 ft longer and 30 ft wider and stand by themselves.

Refused to pay? LOL

I'll gladly pay the parking for a week, it makes for a simple 90 minute drive. Don't need to worry about van / car service and driving is a heck of a lot easier and shorter (time) than taking the train.

Anyway have a great time on RCL!!!

Giorgio-one now complaining about more stuff. Glad I won't be on the same ship as you because I don't like to see your type on board complaining about every detail and not enjoying your vacation. RCL can have you have a great cruise!

Not just the money but the idea of paying for parking is an insult if you have already paid $3000 for a cruise.

Its all about perspective. I get that $3,000 for a cruise is a boatload of money for you (and many people). I live near Boston and since we bumped up to a family of 4 (who all seem to really love cruising, must be in the genes), we're spending $6,0000 easily between fares and cruise tabs (nevermind airfare, hotels, travel insurance, car rentals, etc.). I would gladly part with $235 to park a car for 9-days in NYC, rather than fork out $200 for train tickets (or way more for airfare) and the pleasure of an extra 2 hours added to our trip each way. Transit costs are just the "cost of going on vacation". If you're OK with them, then enjoy the trip. But if you're irked by them, then perhaps its not the right trip for you. We all like and dislike different things; that's what makes the world so damn interesting ;)

NCL's adult only area is at the back of the ship.

The Vibe Beach Club is an oasis with no more than 80 people...it's premium space for those who want quiet & solitude.

Mickey Mouse is on Disney. Perhaps you're confused...

RCL's ships are much bigger than the BA.

I'm sorry that somehow the OP never thanked/acknowledged the numerous posters on this thread who tried in earnest to give him/her good/great advice. In my view, that cements the many comments made that the OP had already made up his/her mind prior to posting.

I'm truly sorry I responded at all. It's the only time I've ever experienced such a negative response on these boards.

We were on the Breakaway in June. I would not tell anyone not to sail on this ship. We were spoiled after the Oasis, so that made it hard for us to really enjoy this ship the way we might have. Having said this the ship had many good things. The dining options were good. The main dining rooms were more than good. The wait time was not too bad, they gave you a beeper and you could go wherever you wanted while you waited. The balcony was tiny but big enough for the two of us to sit for awhile. You couldn't have a party out there! The casino smoke was not too bad. The ship did make us feel squished in some areas like the Atrium. Royal Caribbean has the Promendade which is so much nicer.

The pool area is a joke, so tiny and the main pool is over six feet deep so hard to hang out in. The waterpark and rope area were fun. The shows were okay, not overwhelming and we refused to pay to see Cirque. If you have the specialty dining and the other perks it should be good for you.

I am not rich but $3000 is not a boatload of money for me. Anyone who knows me knows that I am anything but cheap. We cruise twice a year and would cruise more except for family responsibilities. I have taken family and friends on cruises many times and paid both cruisefare and airfare. We also do summer vacations at the Jersey shore and have four subscriptions to theater and orchestra (22 shows per year). Also do AIs but prefer cruises. Parking is not a money thing for me. It is an insult to pay $235 to park my car when I have already paid for the cruise. At that point the parking fee should be nominal - no more than $10 per day. This is different than just pulling into a parking lot at random. As I explained, if i wanted to cruise out of NYC, I would use a van service or have my brother-in-law drive me to the port and give him $250. He offered to do it for nothing because we have paid for their cruises several times. I have done this before and it is a lot less hassle in NYC than parking a car and lugging suitcases. I fully expected the response I got on these boards since most posters are not willing to look at anyone else's opinion. As I said NUMEROUS TIMES, the comments I made (except for Rock of Ages) were from MEMBER REVIEWS. NCL makes a big deal about Rock of Ages. I thought the National Tour sucked and it is certainly not family entertainment. Most posters here were too busy calling me old and cheap to actually address specifics. A few did and more or less said that negative comments had some merit but they still enjoyed their cruise, and so would I if I chose to go on Breakaway. After more than 30 cruises, I can find issues on any ship but it certainly does not ruin my cruise experience. Thats why they call this site CRUISE CRITIC - we identify problems and hopefully make things better. I am not saying that anyone should not go on Breakaway. However, there are many cruise ships to choose from and, at this time, I would prefer another ship. Most people in this world actually agree with me since very few cruisers will ever sail on Breakaway. As far as old, I am 70 years young, work out every day and can easily keep up with most 30 year olds in the gym.

We have been on NCL many times. Like to sail on new ships. Currently have Breakaway Bahamas cruise on hold. Great deal with prepaid gratuities, OBC and 3 free specialty restaurants. However, many of the reviews I read are negative - not just one or two. Cigarette smoke, small cabins, narrow corridors, crowded elevators and public areas, overhyped entertainment. We have subscriptions to several theaters and have seen the National Tour of Rock of Ages. Left at Intermission. Would have left earlier but did not want to disturb people. Sounds like the best show is Cirque which is an extra charge. Do not understand a ship which holds over 4000 passengers with a theater that seats 700. We are young seniors so kids activites mean nothing to us. Paying $235 to park in NYC is a giantic turnoff. Not just the money but the idea of paying for parking is an insult if you have already paid $3000 for a cruise. One of the main reasons I almost never go to sporting events. Have been on Allure of the Seas and going again in January so the WOW factor for Breakaway would probably be a big disappointment compared to Allure. Certainly not going for the Itinerary. Is Breakaway worth spending my money?

No it is not

If I'm understanding your reasoning, you think that the cruise lines should subsidize the cost of parking at the ports. If so, then wouldn't they just increase fares for everyone to cover it, including those of us who don't use the parking facilities.

Not saying that. NYC makes plenty of money having cruise ships sail out of their port. I. really don't care who subsidizes what and how many people love to pay $235. I AINT PAYIN IT! Why is it that everyone here has settled on parking fee rather than actually talkinh about the ship and why it is good. Note that if you have not sailed on Breakaway you cannot defend the ship.

That is how it is too often done on Internet forums. They pick the little piece of the battle that they think they can win and concentrate on that. Kind of like a lawyer trying to destroy the credibility of a witness. If you ignore the silly parking fee argument then the discussion will either move on to another point or die off.

Why would I tell someone to sail on Breakaway? Rock of Ages, the Ropes Course, and the Water Slides. If you are not into those 3 things enough to overlook the crowding issue, then in my opinion you should be on a different ship.

I liked your post. No offense but I would never spend $3000 for those three things. I saw the play for $85 and there are many places with way better water slides. I assume there are many other reasons you go on a cruise.

Thanks. Of course there are other reasons I go on a cruise. My point is that those are the only 3 things that I thought were significantly better on the Breakaway than any other ship I have been on.

That's what I figured. The ropes course sounds like fun. American Ninja Warrior,!

I would say to the OP that if you were looking for reasons to sail on the Breakaway, just read the many positive posts. We are at liberty to say, we were on the July 28th sailing and had a great time. We loved the ropes course, slides, restaurants, gym, latest technology, the Irish Pub, and the entertainment was excellent. I would not think twice about booking tickets for Cirque, IT WAS FANTASTIC! And well worth the money. As for the $3000 you would have spent, double it and you have our grand total since our kids were sailing with us.

In my opinion, the ship had a lot of young active people who enjoyed themselves. It is probably best that you decided against Breakaway, I am afraid you might have been one of those folks who complained about everything, and could have easily put a damper on other people's vacation.

If you're directing this comment towards me you're off base. I'm not trying to win an argument and I could care less about who sails on a particular ship or who doesn't.

Ya know, sometimes you should rely on old sayings I do believe after reading some of this post that: "even a fish wouldn't get into trouble if he'd keep his mouth shut!" (=) However, I'm of the opinion that we all have the right to say what we want, if we want to say it, within reason and no nastiness, please.

Either love the idea of a cruise, regardless of ship, or DON'T cruise at all. As a previous member mentioned, the way you feel, you'd probably bring a lot of people down with you. The very idea of cruising is a vacation plan that sends most people over the moon with anticipation and happiness. Why would anyone want to persuade someone who has negative feelings about cruising to pay good money for something they may not enjoy? We all have things we love about cruising, ask anyone what they love and you'll get a whole list. There may be 10 different things from 10 different people b/c we all love different things.

In the long run, it's up to you and how YOU feel about cruising. Please don't cruise if you don't want to, there are lots of things you can do that you might enjoy more.

I so wish we lived closer to an NCL port. I'd probably be on a cruise every time my DH goes off on one of his week-long business trips. HEHE, wouldn't that be fun, he'd probably have to retire if that ever happened, he wouldn't be able to stand it. :p

Love to cruise,

Connie

Really? Because those are 3 of the reasons I plan to drop $5k on my Breakaway trip next May. To each their own I guess...

I have to agree with others that it does not sound like you will like Breakaway.

I am also booked on Breakaway and I have to say it was a leap of faith. I didn't realize it when I booked but now I think it was a risky decision. But I am looking forward to the cruise and expect it to be just fine. I know there will be unsatisfactory aspects here and there but overall it will still be a great vacation. :)
