Who do YOU share your cruise plans with?

Fouremco - You're right for calling me out on a couple of points - but I wrote that posting quickly and didn't want to get into a long technical post about GPS enabled cells and routing IP's etc...

 

But my point about NOT notifying newspaper carriers, police, insurance and all other delivery and service providers stands because they are not as reliable as a good neighbour who has the keys to your house.

 

One more item I forgot: When the airport limo comes to fetch us we call and leave from a slightly different location... the neigbours place!

I bet every Canadian reading this will remember the name Russell Williams, a high-ranking member of the Canadian military who ultimately pled guilty to 88 charges, ranging from break-ins to murder, all sexually-motivated. One of his neighbours was quoted as saying "he always seemed so polite and nice".

I agree that a good neighbour is one of the best defences, but I still think that the other steps add additional layers of protection. Just as taking the limo from the neighbour's adds another element of security. Assuming, of course, that you pay cash and not by credit card. :)

But if you take the Limo from your neighbors house, then the crooks that are casing the neighborhood think they are going away . Then when they go to work ,the crooks will break into their house thinking they are on vacation.

I thought I was quite aware of personal/online safety previously, but I have to say -- this thread has REALLY made me aware of the "tracks" we leave both online and in real life. Was at the gas station today, and realized that everyone THERE knows my car. They also have a general idea of the area of town in which I live. I guess when I next have travel plans I won't be mentioning it at the gas station ;)

Before my recent bad experience, I also would have posted reviews with pics of me and DH. But not now. There are no privacy or security guards on a site such as this where you can limit who can look at your pictures.

I think that there is a huge difference between sharing data before a cruise and after a cruise.

 

I also think that there is a world of difference between sharing information and sharing information that contains personal data or photos, ie photos with your picture in them. We never ever do the latter.

 

Though I am a bit paranoid. A career in the IT industry has taught me that there is no such thing as data security when it comes to sites like Facebook or other open forums. The illusion of data security may be present but in reality it certainly is completely absent. That is why many of these organizations are being challenged by privacy legislation in many jurisdictions and have made certain basic security/privacy enhancements only when forced to do so.

 

I cringe when DW shows me facebook pages of her friends, and their children, accompanied by lots of personal data. I think the sense is that people feel these sites are anonymous. They are anything but.

I've never shared pics online that have people in them. I have no prob writing and sharing a review, though. I do omit names and specific cabin locations from reviews.

Apart from any security issue, I cannot imagine who would be interested in photos of people that they do not know or are not in the public eye. It is the old 'home movie' syndrome.

And why is it that those people back then took the most inane pictures with even more inane commentary to go woth it. *LOL*

 

I could see looking at beautiful scenery and famous places (especially back then when not a lot of average joe type people traveled like they do now.)

 

But your looking at some strange lady standing in a parking lot in the middle of nowhere waving at you.

My dad who had no patiernce for this stuff. or my uncle (his brother in law) used to call him Zapruder.

Yup but remember back then, there wasn't all that much exciting to do on a Saturday night when you were married and had kids, so anything that kept the kids quiet was a good time ;) "here's the chips, here's the dip, have a soda, and we'll get the adults some beer". I suspect the beer helped the parents endure the picture show!

<RANT>I realize there are several similiar social media "data stores" but for me FB is one of most obnoxious. I have never been a member nor do I ever plan to be a member, yet I keep getting "Friend" or "Join" requests from people. And along with it in the email notification is a list of others who "know" me. I have neither joined nor agreed to their privacy policy yet apparently it is okay that someone else uploads my contact info and now they are using it to contact and build a "network" around me.:mad: </RANT>

I belong to an organization/hobby that ends up involving alot of photography and posting of pictures of each other participating in our "thing". One of the rules we have is that we do not identify the individuals in the pictures. Those who want to have their identity posted with their pictures have their own blogs or websites. Its not totally private but it is a good way to balance sharing and maintaining some privacy.

 

Some years back i was very active on a certain technology support group forum. For grins i googled myself and was horrified to find pages of my posts come up.:eek: Later, in order to get to a professor's website (his name as domain name) i googled him and got several hits that included posts that were on the same forum obviously by him (as the user name was a clever variation and included some of his "favorite lines."):eek:
