This thread is for SLOTS players only

There's no doubt casino's everywhere can and will change payout percentages, but there's also no doubt slot players spend too much time thinking about when things are "tight" or "loose" when it's mostly just attributed to plain old good or bad luck....... Anyone who thinks they've got things figured out about when machines will pay more is fooling themselves.

It's all about odds, period. And the casino can set the odds to whatever they wish them to be (this is true of all of the computer programed slot machines). I have a son and a son-in-law who work for IGT and they develop, write code and make slot machines. When you push the button on the new style slot machines the play is set at that moment and the computer program generates what you see on the screen. On the old fashioned slot machines with real reels that spin, the odds were set by how many bars/7's/plums, etc., were put on the reels and that was set at the time the machine was manufactured and couldn't be adjusted later by casino personal. Though it would be nearly impossible to find a machine like that anywhere these days.

I HIGHLY doubt that the cruise casino people adjust machines "looser" or "tighter" from hour to hour or day to day. or start of cruise or end of cruise. There is no need to do that....slot machines are programed to make plenty of money just the way they are.

I had a guy on Vision walk up behind me with a remote transmitter and change a machine I was playing on. I was winning. As soon as I saw him do it, I cashed out.

It seems that I spend less time in the casino on each cruise. That's a good thing for me.

lol. I promise that did not happen.

I do always check out the odd on the machines because I have same game type have different payouts in different locations in the casino.

Yes, this is one of the ways older slot machines "adjusted" the odds of a machine, by changing the pay outs. This is most often noticeable on poker slots machines, where they can pay out, for instance, a full house on one machine 9 to 1 and on another machine 6 to 1.....quite a difference.

This adjustment of odds can happen on table games also. Even the small difference of paying XX TO 1 vs. XX FOR 1, can make a huge difference in profit for the house.

I will ask my son the next time I speak to him if there is a way to change slot machine odds or pay offs by a remote device.....I can't imagine this happening....anything remote would be operating on a wifi signal and could be so easily hacked as to be extremely dangerous....all it would take is an inside job (casino worker "helping" a friend win a big jackpot) or someone who hacks the system and makes it pay out more for himself.

Ship casinos can do some nasty things to make more money but it seems to me there are a lot of "urban legends" about what they do to the slot machines.

Daghis,

I was looking at that pic thinking, "Now why did he post this." Then I scrolled down. Good story.

The best defense for this?

We spent 21 nights on Legend Jan/Feb of this year. We only play slots, and plat $10-$15 each a night. We would loose some, then win a little back, loose some more, maybe win a little. On the last night of the cruise, DH played several slots, and was winning. He was just lucky, as he would play a slot and win $20-$30, then move to another, and win some more. Hew won enough, we were about even for the whole cruise. (He won about $130. over the night). Now I'm not sure if they "tighten" the slots towards the end of the cruise. Maybe we are not hitting on the "hot" machines. They all go through cycles. More times loosing than winning. The key is to hit the machine while it is on a "hot" streak! :D

I don't play at sea because of the lack of regulations, but if the rules are stipulated on the machine (and of course it is going to be in tiny print:rolleyes:) I don't see what the problem is. It's up to the gambler to understand the game and potential payouts. Sounds like OP is the one that made a big stink without knowing the rules of the particular game the other person was playing. I don't fault OP for trying to be helpful to that person or for being helpful in reminding all of us to check exactly what you are playing as machines can and DO differ.

I was on the Emerald Princess last month and over the course of 10 days, won 4 jackpots on a penny machine, playing 2 dollar bets. I won a total of just over 10k and never would have thought that after the first jackpot that the machine would pay another, but it did, 3 more times. As another poster said, they make plenty of money without the need to adjust machines on a daily basis and I've never seen it done. I was just in the right place at the right time.

I knew that there would be ONE obnoxious person who would entirely miss the point and post this.

That really is horrible! BUT...I do know there are tricks in that trade that cheat us....also, RC can loosen and tighten those machines in the master control room, its just a matter of figuring out when the best time to play...the first night also could be loose if the house wins money from the last cruise...trust me we go on many cruises (sometimes just so he can play his slots and have a getaway) and he says there is no pattern its just a matter of when the cruise line loosens the machines and then he says some types of machines are more looser than others,

maybe that is how he always wins he knows?

I hear tell, that if you rub the glass of the slot machine, it will pay better.:p

Also, if you hit the spin button REALLY HARD and fast that will improve your chances.

On one of the Princess ships, the last night of the cruise, all the machines that were slightly paying off-no big wins, just enough to keep it interesting-were shut off!

I actually don't play anymore on board. I used to at times, now the cruise card had to be inserted on our last Island Princess cruise so no gambling for me. I just don't like to 'have to ' do that. I also liked to receive actual cash. Now is seems just put your money in for them to keep it.

My wife had a relative that owned 2 casinos in vegas in the 50's and 60's.

He gave me a couple of secrets that I can't talk about. Believe me or not.

2 out of 3 cruises average (been on over 20), I have won enough to pay off our cruise card charges before debarking.

I would write a book, but, I wouldn't like being banned from the machines.

We just sailed NCL Getaway 7 days. The first night the video slots were REALLY hitting. This one won $4,000, that one hit $3,000 and then same machine $1,000. There was pandemonium with all the bells and whistles going Off sith people hitting jackpots.People were talking, the word was spreading. Even myself a penny poker player won $300. Then it started to tighten up with less hits in the days to come. Many gamblers around us had been offered free cruises through Harrah's promotions. Respectfully they were serious gamblers and had the stomach to max bet top dollar. They said machines are always loose the beginning of the trip. The Harrah's group were given free drink VIP comp cards. They were a fun bunch to be around in the beginning, not so much at the airport.

Is it common practice for ships to offer gamers the thrill of the big win early.....knowing once the fever hits they get it all back anyway ?

This is a common myth. Casinos do not "tighten" and "loosen" machines at will, by the day, or by the hour, or for any other reason. Any machine on any day can hit several times in a row, not at all for hours or days, or anything in between.

Casinos are in the business of making money. They make their money on every "pull" of the handle, penny by penny, dollar by dollar. The house edge on every game insures that, no matter how many jackpots they pay out, they will still make money...if they didn't, they'd quickly go out of business.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. The question I have is ... Do you know if this holds true for Cruise Ships in International Waters where gambling might not be as regulated as Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Again I'm not a big gambler but the group traveling with Harrah's International spoke as if they wrote the book on gaming! If you don't mind me asking (and tend to agree with you based on Casinos in the US) what do you base your opinions on?

There is so much misinformation on this thread that I am not about to try to correct it all, but this is absolutely wrong and preposterous. you can not change the settings on a slot machine with a remote control. In fact changing the settings on a slot machine is a complicates process, and the person who thought he saw someone doing it on a machine next to him was also wrong. Slots can not be changed on a whim like that.

This made me laugh. The slot machines of the 50's and 60's (all mechanical, not even a hint of computers)are not in any way similar to the slot machines of today. I can't even imagine what "advice" someone who owned a casino back then could have to share that might help you now.

It all revolves around how you play and how you are being tracked. OK?
