Carnival Stock - onboard credit

Recommended Posts

I have owned my stock for several years and bought it when it was close to $40 per share.
We got lucky and got in at $24 and change back in 09 after the economy tanked.
In August of 2008, I bought 101 Carnival shares at $35.74/share an investment.of $3,610.75,.
Exactly, we purchased in 2003 at $24/share for a total of $2400.
I paid $20 something a share, I am sure I have covered the cost of the stock by now. :)

I'm super jealous of all you guys ! ;p

I see no reason why it's still not a good investment. 100 shares at the current price may be tough for some. However, they show clear signs of growth on the Horizon (pun not really intended). Cruising is a booming business. They are adding more and larger ships all over the world.

Old thread, but...I use my IRA money to buy stocks, and Carnival has been one of my wisest investments. Also, I can't touch my IRA money for several more years, but with the OBC, in a way, I'm already drawing a benefit from my IRA. With my May statement, I'll put in for my $250 OBC credit for my Journey cruise that starts in August. IRA money is invested in something somewhere, and this one's pretty good.

This is nuts... are some of you really considering spending almost $7,000 ($66.79/share) to buy 100 shares of stock just to get a $50-100 OBC?

Buy it in your 401k retirement account. I bought a few years ago at $49.00 a share. I cruise 4 to 5 times a year and also get the dividend. That is $500 to $600 a year in OBC. That is about 8.968609865% annual ROI tax free plus the almost $1700+ increase in share price over those years. Show me a better return on investment.

here's a nudder thread on the same topic!

not sure without digging if this is the one that a big argument happened early in the thread but we got it all worked out

we bought the stock in my wifes 401k watched it tank a month later and then race to that all time high!

we take about 3 cruises a year on average with maybe 75-80 being carnival the last 5-6 years so its paid off well for us though we've only had the stock for the last couple years, we will keep as long as we can cruise

Royal C offers the same deal but theirs is supposed to be harder to redeem, many of their fares don't allow for the on board credit.

We are thinking of buying the stock, but I read that it can't be used for gratuities. Is this true? We normally don't book tours from the cruise line and aren't big drinkers, especially at ship prices (bottle of wine in cabin). Never have tried specialty dining, we aren't "foodies". Not sure it would be worth it, as we sail only 2x a year at the most.

TIA for your advice

There is no problem using the Stockholder OBC for gratuities. Now the SOBC won't cover all of the gratuities but it will cover part of them.

Thanks to all for your replies. Glad to know we can use it for what we want. We don't do the drink package (soft or hard) or pictures. But the gratuities is what we would use it for.

  • 5 years later...

getting ready to send off some cruise bookings to see if we can get our obc for the next three cruises....

last time we were on mardis gras using my wifes airline retiree benefit and it was denied a new change in the benefits but most our cruises with carnival now are casino deals and  they say they will still let us get the obc for shareholder so we'll see
