Cabin Disappointment - Quest (Moved Posts)

I just cancelled my Oct 2014 Croatia cruise with Azamara Quest. They sold off my original cabin midship on 7 and stuck me in a Club Continent 8067 in deck 8. Mold growing under my bed, broken shower drain, sewage odors in hallway, fans blowing to camouflage odor, stains on carpet, and noise above from restaurant chairs moving. I would be surprised if they are around and this is not the same Azamara I had taken prior and going downhill fast. You may be able to get a real good deal on my Croatia cruise ;-)) My Amex travel agent told me my cabin move was "revenue driven" so obviously they got a better price for my midship 7 and stuck me with the "garbage". Couple two cabins down from me also cancelled their cruise. Two down, more to come I am sure.

I am on quest in sept and your post causes me some concern. Was ur only issue ur particular stateroom or were there similar issues elsewhere on the ship?

Yes, this was on the Quest and it was Nice to Rome end of April until May2 2014.

Did you want my cabin for Oct 2014 ;-))

No, but we are booked on the Quest for August, in a guarantee too, so who knows what we will be allocated!

Hopefully the problems will be rectified by then.

We have done four cruises on the Quest over the last four years and have never seen or had a problem other than our toilet blocking which was fixed promptly so here's hoping for August.

I do not know about other cabins but the noise issue on floor 8 is a problem due to restaurant being overhead. The other couple that cancelled complained about it also along with the sewage smell in the hallway of our cabins. Water stains on carpet also and in other areas on ship. They removed the moldy carpet under our bed 2nd to last day, but I think it is in the walls, as well. Other aspects of cruise were very good, but we use a ship as a floating hotel and our room is very important to us. I learned a valuable lesson and will make sure my TA adds "no upgrades" in the future with all other cruises.

Hi Everyone,

FYI, I moved the above 6 posts to it's own thread, as it was taking the other thread off-topic.

Thanks for your understanding.

Had you booked a particular cabin or was this a guarantee?

Thanks

I had booked a particular cabin...I am very particular!! They just moved my cabin without our approval . We have taken apprx 20 cruises (4 last year) and prefer upscale and smaller ships. This is our biggest disappointment and because we have always had wonderful experiences prior we did not know that we could request "no room changes". It is a learning experience and CC is new to me also so please bear with my learning experience here, also. I was so concerned that I just had to be vocal about such a terrible issue and I could care less what $$ amount they want to provide. The vacation experience was ruined ..Period. It was just an FYI...and we love our cruising...one bad apple does not spoil the bunch

They "stuck you" in a suite? To each his own but you got upgraded to a cabin 50% larger than what you booked with a real full size bathroom vs. a tiny shower only cabin. You got a butler, if you ever needed one, and unlimited access at no charge to the alternative dining venues Prime C and Aqualina. Do you realize the difference between what you booked and what you got? The cabins on deck 8 and deck 7 are not the same. And port vs. starboard?

I have been on multiple ships with occasional sewer smells and wet carpets (often because passengers get seasick and vomit and clean up requires wet until the blowers dry things out). Not pleasant but it happens. You should have politely requested a cabin carpet change if it was in fact a real problem and not just you, if you know what I mean. And yes there is occasional noise from the buffet above. Life happens. Some passengers cannot be appeased.

I thought the same thing. We've sailed in both categories and prefer the suite. DH won't sail in a balcony again....he didn't like the size of the cabin or bath in the balcony category. He's usually concerned about cost but not on the R ships.

For someone who has enjoyed previous cruises and they're now new to CC and their first post is a negative one....with several complaints, it makes me somewhat leary of the post. Same feelings many tripadvisor members feel when a new person joins only to badmouth a certain resort, etc. I'm not necessarily discounting what the OP is saying but it does make me go hmmmmmmm!

One reason we have never booked a suite on deck 8 is the fact that the open decks and restaurants are above them.

We would love the larger room and extra perks but certainly NOT the noise that comes with it.

Add to that a mouldy carpet and nasty odours, I can fully understand the OP's annoyance.

One shouldn't have to request a carpet change, housekeeping should be aware and be proactive not wait on a request from a passenger.

We generally select cabins between accommodation decks.

Thank you Glendale,

I can afford a suite also but would not want to be in one with a restaurant, pool or anything other than cabin above. We choose our rooms very carefully and it was not an upgrade to us. Also, to spend 6 nights with mold growing under you bed is not the way I live at home and nobody else should either. The only reason the carpet finally was removed was because I told them I was canceling my Oct 2014 cruise due to these problems. Plenty of other nice ships out there to choose from.

We were on deck 8 last month. The cabin staff were brilliant and did anticipate all things. As other posters have said sometimes carpets have to be cleaned and nasty smell emit from the sewage system, especially if some dozy (could have used another word) person puts things into the toilet system that they should not.

We heard no noise from the decks above even though we were under one of the busiest areas with heavy duty doors that slam, never heard a thing.

I would also add i have sailed on 3 other lines and on each one, at some point, someone's cabin door was wide open and a stinky smell was being sorted out. We have been on one ship where the atruim stank of mouldy, stagnant water mixed with some very nasty on the nose chlorine type smell. Obviously trying to sort it out. We have been on a ship that had a massive explosive leak in a couple of the public toilets before we embarked, resulting in whole areas of damp smelly carpets, humidifiers everywhere and the walls were damp, everything had steam on it.

They are ships full of people and activity and food.......

We were on another that had been recently refited (not Quest), that had black and red mold everywhere in the shower area that would not shift, needed new tiles.

These things happen and most are ongoing fixes. I would be unhappy about a mouldy smell under the bed. Not sure why they did not fix that with a clean and dehumidifier straight away. Unless they could not detect it when they checked. Who knows, but its not remotely like the level of care we have always had on Azamara, indeed on all our cruises.

I've been on 8 a few times (I've written cabin reviews on them in the uktog sticky thread at the top of this page) and have never been bothered by noise from above. Heard it in 8070, but not too bad. I realise some cabins on 8 under high traffic areas will experience more noise so try to pick my spot.

In terms of noise it's those who let their flippin' cabin doors slam that's more annoying.

Hi Yvonne & Phil, I take your points, especially the ones about odours on other ships and door slammers (that is so anti social) but chairs being scraped across the deck, as well as equipment being moved at early o'clock is something I personally strive to avoid.

The OP should have put no upgrade on his booking but hindsight is always 20/20 :)

Yes, I learned a valuable lesson about requesting "no upgrades". Having never had any problems or major issues ever, I did not know about it. My husband and I are not big drinkers, don't go to shows or casino's and manage our waistlines so we do not eat a lot either. We want a nice, clean room with a balcony, gym, and a place to dine for two in the evening. We are younger than most and the reason we take cruises is because it is so much easier to unpack once. We are here to see the world. Therefore, this room issue was serious to us and they were made aware upon embarkation and the room butler even told them of the odor. AZ also told me they could not change our room because they were "sold out". I inquired with the young woman that checks your room card upon entering and leaving the ship and she too me they were not sold out and about 50 pp remaining unused. Hmmmm....Anyway, I have booked another Croatia cruise with the itinerary we want and it is with Celebrity Constellation Aqua class for Sept. 2015. A larger ship, but I anticipate my room will be very clean and I will gladly pay for my extras, as always.

Good luck, whilst we alternate between the two lines, we have found significant drawbacks in the Aquaclass rooms of solsticized M class ships, we will sail in Aft Aqua Class but not Deck 9 rooms

Thanks. We are on 11 and had been on Summit last August to Bermuda. Our room was lovely and spacious and we enjoyed having Blu and the privacy that you get from Aqua class. A few too many t-shirt types around the pool area for us but as I said this is our floating hotel and Croatia is not the short journey from NY. I am not excited about 2000 pp, but this itinerary works for us.

Sorry to sound daft, but what's a T Shirt type?

I think it is irrelevant to portofinoitaly that many of us have had good experiences of deck 8 on Quest. She quite rightly complained about the mould in her stateroom (as I would) and found it unpleasant.

What I am surprised about though is that the issue was not dealt with immediately. Knowing both Quest Hotel Directors well and their keen attention to detail I wonder why this problem slipped through the net.

I am glad that portofinoitaly enjoyed some aspects of the Quest cruise and hope that her trip to Croatia on Constellation is perfect.
