QM2 Dry Dock

The flowers on our December TA seemed especially lovely - perhaps a little extra to compete with the Christmas decorations?

The Fall Foliage cruise were also. I think it may be due to Ryan - he is probably the most gifted florist I have seen on land or at sea. I have never seen someone embrace the art of floral arranging quite as much as he did. I never saw him without a smile.

Being your first time onboard you are going to be amazed by the ship! She may have some wear and tear but honestly, most ships do! But it's never enough to make you think 'I shouldn't have done this'.. As really, so what if there's rusy on your balcony railing or if your sofa is a abit outdated, it's hardly enough to make you wanna jump overboard, but my main argument with this is that Cunard themseleves should have higher standards seeing as they are the ones who market themselves as 'the best & most luxurious etc etc' so why is it that passangers are finding so much rust on their 'deluxe' balconies upon boarding the ship? On any other ship they may not think anything of it but when when you've been feed so much marketing about the 'premium luxury' it's hard to not notice those little things.. And I think we all do have a right to 'complain' because Cunard need to realise if they plan on continuing to market this ship as 'the best' then they need to get ontop of their basic maintance. Im honestly shocked that each ship doesnt get a full clean, repaint and General going over before they depart on their world voyage. The ship itself is an advertisement so you would think Cunard would want it looking it's best when going around the world. She looks dirty from the photos I saw of her this week when she left Southampton! Crossing my fingers she's much cleaner by the time I board her in feb!

Thank you to everyone for your encouraging words! In reply to the above, I think that's where I am coming from too. I'm not worried about an outdated sofa etc., but when you put all the small issues together they seem to add up to a ship that is in need of a little tlc. Having travelled on QV and QE I thought QM2 would be similar in terms of cleanliness and maintenance, but perhaps this is slightly unrealistic.

Except for the hull needing painting, I didn't see any problems this past fall; I was on Fall 13 & Fall 14 and saw no other major differences from all the others times I have been on. In fact, the Chart Room & Golden Lion are better than their original incarnations. Still pretty perfect, to me.

By the way - there are beautiful fresh flowers everywhere on the ship. something you won't normally see on mass market cruise ships. If you like the flowers, sign up for the flower arranging class. It was one of the most fun activities I have done on board. The instructor is great, you get to decorate your cabin with the beautiful arrangements, and it's an activity most people would not have time to do in "non-Cunard" (meaning normal, everyday) life

Thank you, I shall look out for the flower arranging classes :)

  • 2 months later...
So we now know she will be in dry dock from May-June 2016 for about a month, will be interesting to see what they do.

It's quite a long dry dock so looks like it might be more than just cosmetic changes and a re-paint.

... Is this the one? While I wouldn't take it home I sat on it a bit and it was adequate to the task ….
It is. Same throughout Britannia grade (where a sofa is provided; Ocean View & Balcony Cabins only I think).

Although the colour of the upholstery no longer matches the (redecorated) cabins, they are still practical... two can sit down on them comfortably. Some can turn into beds, so I understand (although I've never seen this).

Not sure what further some here can want from a two-seater sofa

To light up? Play tunes? Mix a martini? Hand out canapé? :D

Best wishes.

(edited to add: Whatever comes next, I hope the replacement sofas continue to have a flat wooden top to the arms, so handy for resting one's glass on ;) )

The lounges (sofas) seem to inspire a lot of hate from regulars on QM2.

Are they the same throughout?

Is this the one?

I think people don't like the fact that they were part of the original furnishings so are now 11 years old.

Yup, that's the one. Imagine how many times that piece of upholstered furniture has been around the world? Or how often it has been cleaned

Adequate to the task, yes. But then so is a park bench if all you want to do is sit down and admire the view. :)

My custom is to place a clean pool towel on the lounge/sofa/love seat thingie.

I understand why you wouldn't want to take it home, but while you are board, your cabin is your home.

QUOTE]

Our adult daughter slept on one on our last crossing and said it was quite comfortable. The only problem we found was that when it was made up into a bed it was very difficult to get to the balcony.

Our sofa was very old, stained and worn. They would benifit from a replacement or a spruce up.

I wonder what other type of changes we will see during this long refit? This is good news for the QM2 I feel. The Queen of Queens gets a make over, I cannot wait to see the results.

Tried to do some searching last night but didn't find any official word from Cunard on this. What we do know is that QM2 has nothing in her schedule between arriving in Hamburg on May 27 and departing on June 21 of 2016. That's more than twice as long as her 2011 refit that mostly involved soft furnishings. I don't see Cunard making any announcements this far out as they would not want the public to postpone their bookings.
