Breakaway or X Summit to Bermuda?

Just your thoughts on what one you would pick I'm more keen on X just for the fact they've got 5 star service, Coca-Cola, but I thought I would compare the two.

No reason to be without your Coke/Diet Coke on NCL. We packed a 12 pack of my Coke Zero and brought it right on board. The Breakaway and the Summit were docked next to each other during our summer trip. We ran into some cruisers from X at a few stops and compared activities etc. on the ships. They seem pretty similar to me although I think X has a slightly older demographic and they are a bit more formal with dining. Personally, I like leaving my dress clothes at home. Are the prices similar?

Who is traveling? Ages? Kids? What's most important to you on a cruise? Too many questions to provide an easy answer

Just got off the Getaway Saturday, was on the Breakaway in February and sailed on the Summit to Bermuda in August. I was pleasantly surprised by the Summit but I would go on Breakaway without a second thought. I love the promenade deck 8 concept first of all. I had a concierge class balcony on Summit and found it to be not worth any difference over a regular balcony besides the comfy robes. There was better activities and a younger demographics on NCL too. I will give the Summit the edge for foodies, the Normandie specialty restaurant lobster flambe was cooked table side and was a phenomenal meal. There was definitely more formality on Summit which is not my style. My DW was walking from the casino back to the room in a tee shirt to get dressed up when a woman said to her " You do realize it is formal night?" Kinda says something about the people who think they are something and do sail on the X.

Um, I'm not sure where you've heard that Celebrity has 5 Star service unless you were reading it in one of their brochures!

After 245 days onboard Celebrity, you couldn't pay me to go back, especially on Summit!

But again, it all depends on what you want.

Summit has a lot more deck/pool space available than Breakaway but in all other aspects ... entertainment, activities, specialty restaurants and choice - Breakaway wins hands down.

If you're sailing in a Suite, there's no comparison. The Haven is in a class by itself. Diet Coke is a pretty poor criteria while comparing ships ... aside from having a pop, what else do you like to do?!

Someone wrote the Breakaway they just nickel and dime you.

The nickel and diming does not add up to "X" $1 and $5ing you. "X" specialty rest. isn't complimentary, photos cost extra too, excursions and drinks, so forth. "X" usually has a much higher price to begin with. The extra fees are on all the mainstream lines.

With that said, I still like both lines.

We went to Bermuda on the Breakaway in 2013, and the Summit to Bermuda in 2014.

No comparison! The Breakaway wins in every way!!!

There are so many more dining and entertainment choices on the Breakaway.

The Summit's buffet had food pre-portioned out in small dishes. By the time we sat down, the food was cold.

I could go on and on, but in my opinion the Breakaway is newer and much more fun in every way.

  • 3 weeks later...

Did same cruise on Breakaway 2013. Both brands have a great product. My choice would be Celebrity if they are still offering still the free classic alcohol drink package. Last year I sailed on the Summit and loved the free drink package. Fare for the two of us was $500.00 less than the Breakaway for same date and category. Entertainment was surprisingly good. CD was former NCL CD Ken Mills.

Have been on the Breakaway once and the Summit 4 times.

We did have a nice time on the Breakaway, but way too many children. (and we went OFF SEASON ...September, when children should have been in school) Food was okay, entertainment good, service good.

Summit, adults!!!! Hardly any children. Food, wonderful. Shows wonderful. Service, always impeccable.

To Bermuda, I would definitely choose the Summit again, hands down.

My parents (big X fans) did Summit this past year and were decidedly unimpressed. It was nice and quiet though, they liked that. We just got back from the Breakaway and had a fabulous time. If it were me I would take the Breakaway, no question. But, as others have said, it depends on who's sailing and what they're looking for.

Sorry to doublepost, I missed this before my last response. Our cruise on Breakaway was our first after many on other lines, including RCI, X, and Carnival. I actually felt substantially less nickle and dimed on the Breakaway than I did on either of my two immediately preceding cruises, on RCI's Allure and X's Silhouette. I know NCL has had that reputation for many years, but it didn't ring true at least on my one NCL sailing last week.

I left this part of your question out of my post also. I VERY much agree with this poster. I do not remember ONCE being bothered on the Breakaway. On the Summit (which I told you we loved) we were CONSTANTLY hounded by the cocktail waiters on the lido deck. Even if our drinks were half full, they would still say "Mr. Karl, are you ready for another" (never asked me...lol...just my hubbie)

We went out in our boat last July and cruised close to both Summit and Breakaway that were both docked at Dockyard at same time.

Summit - ugly ship - rust shown on hull.

Breakaway - nice ship - ugly hull design - but no rust shown.

Whenever we cruise on older NCL ships we do not see rust on hull - they keep on painting here and there all the time.

You have not even been on the Summit, so not sure how you are able to say it is an ugly ship. The Summit is beautiful.

You are comparing the outer rust?????? The Breakaway is brand new, so of course it has no outer rust.

Have cruised on both Summit and Breakaway. (And other ships on both lines.)

If you were comparing a Celebrity Solstice class ship to Breakaway, I'd have a tough choice. Since you're comparing Summit, and older Celebrity ship, my choice would be easy. Breakaway hands down.

X got to stuffy and add ons up the wazoo loved x last cruise on silhouette was not good:

X definitely needs to tone down the sales pitches. You couldn't return to the ship and walk 10 feet on my Silhouette cruise without having a crew member in your face trying to sell you specialty dining. It was really off-putting and irritating, especially after a long and tiring day of touring ashore in Europe.
