REALLY odd question about Australia....yoghurt

Recommended Posts

  • 9 months later...

I'm baaaaaaaaaack.

First, thank you all again for your very helpful information about shopping in Sydney. We have booked three days pre-cruise, and intend to shop for a lot of "necessities" instead of having them weigh down our luggage for the flights over.

My really good news (for me!) is that in the 10 months since I posted this question and asked for your advice, my taste buds have matured! I no longer buy the yoghurt in the little containers with fruit add-ins! I just like the plain Greek yoghurt, and throw in a little cinnamon or honey or both or some such.

It's going to make my life much easier, if I want to buy supplies before my cruise!

Do you recommend buying toiletries like shampoo, liquid soap, contact lens solution in the supermarkets, or are they usually a better buy in other types of stores?

How about batteries (normal ones, like AA)?

Thank you, as always, for all of your assistance to this new-to-Down-Under traveler!

I would buy it all in the US, as you can buy small bottles in Walmarts, chemists/supermarkets much cheaper than in Australia. Our specials are in larger bottles. Batteries are cheaper in US also. However, check airline's requirements with regard to the carriage of batteries.

You will get all that in supermarkets. You may (will) pay more than in the USA but won't have to lug it half way round the world and run the risk of it leaking in your bag.

There are also a lot of stores in Sydney selling specialist hair junk and also Chemists (pharmacies).

...and carriage of liquids. Most of the major supermarkets carry a range travel pack size toiletries these days.:)

Chobani is good for flavoured, as is Tamar Valley (I like the no added sugar version plus a family friend started the company) and Gippsland diary ones are good too but they might be more common in Victoria.

Gippsland is my favorite, and abundant here in Queensland. Heaps of flavors [emoji4]

Shampoo - depends on whether you are fussy about brand. As well as the supermarkets there are chemists (pharmacy stores) that sell hair products. There is a large Priceline between York and George Streets near Market St, and another big chemist in Pitt St Mall. Also there is probably a hair products specialist shop in the Sydney Westfield Mall - there is definitely one in the Bondi Junction Westfield.

Unless you want an upmarket liquid soap you should be OK buying that in the supermarkets, otherwise look around the beauty sections of the department stores - Myer and David Jones.

Not sure about contact lens solution but probably supermarket or chemist.

Batteries aren't cheap in Australia so the supermarkets are probably the best place to buy them.

Sometimes you just have to trade off price for luggage space ;) :D

Having done a 54 night cruise where I had to fly to board ship and with only 20 kg luggage I would definitely recommend buying toiletries, other items in Sydney rather than flying with them especially as you have time in Sydney beforehand.

Enjoy your cruise, you start to think of the ship as your new home, if only.

Wonderful.

My longest has been 34 days, but 105 and 75 are high on the list.

I find that buying contact lens solution is a better price at some of the discount chemist shops than at the opticians. I think I got two 500ml bottles and a case for about AU$17

I use yoghurt in cooking all the time. My preference is for greek style yoghurt. There are many different brands and all seem good but some are better. I think the one I settled on is Farmers Union as it has a sweetness and a bit of a bite. I think off the shelf it has some added sugar. That only lasted the first tub as after that I just used their culture and make my own. It is probably the best culture I have had other than one a friend gave me which was from an Indian family going back at least three generations. I just buy a big bottle of milk and when it's getting close to the use by date I turn it into yoghurt. Not practical when travelling though.

There are just so many things you can do with yoghurt. I like to add crushed garlic (local), black pepper and some Himalayan salt and use it as a sauce on steamed broccoli, cauliflower or potatoes.

The diary products here are quite good. We do not have the raw milk cheese commonly yet but I believe they are coming once the regulations are eased.

Sorry for the double post.

I also second (?third) the suggestion to do some shopping at Bondi Junction Westfield. I think they have a Hairhouse Warehouse on one of the lower floors (near Hot Dollar and a pet shop) and you'll be able to get good quality hair products there. Upstairs you can go to DJs or Myer for nice hand soap. I think there is an OPSM nearby.

A new question to follow up on all of my previous questions:

We have now settled on our accommodations. We are renting an apartment in Pyrmont.

I know that I could look at a map of Sydney, but I'd rather ask all of you.

You have mentioned shopping malls and specific stores.

What will I find convenient (walking distance?) from Distillery Drive? I think that it's close to at least one light rail station?

To be honest mom, I'm going to have to look at a map. But I'll get back to you.

Don't tell anyone but I asked Mrs Gut and had a look at a map.

There is an IGA supermarket (grocery store) in Pyrmont, in Miller Street. Only a few blocks from where you're staying.

Larger centres with a greater range in specialty shops you may be best to get the light rail into the city, probably jump off at Haymarket and wander down George Street to the QVB, Toen hall, Pitt Street and George Street areas.

Also you're within walking distance of the Fish Markets. As well as wonderful fresh seafood, there is an excellent delicatessan which has a very wide range of foods although it's a bit expensive. There is also a reasonable greengrocer there.
