Cigar Smoking...

Recommended Posts

Who has smoked a cigar on their balcony since the ban went into place? Have you been asked to stop? Did neighboring cabins complain? Did a member of the RCI staff address the issue?

I love to sit on my balcony and enjoy a cigar late at night. I don't want to disturb anyone. Is this actually causing a problem? Who's got first hand experience?

I have reported smokers…and not just to Guest Services. I start with the upper level.

Yes, each time the issue was addressed. On one cruise the smoker denied smoking and the cabin was inspected by security for the scent of smoke, even clothing inspected for it. It put a stop to it immediately.

I will not hesitate to do it again.

You sound like a person who wants to be considerate…we also sit on our balcony late at night; it is the main reason we cruise so much.

Good feedback. But still waiting for what I asked. Who has smoked a cigar and been asked to stop? Great to have "stories" from people who have complained about this. But I'd love to hear if any smokers have actually been confronted by RCI...

Yes

My mom has severe asthma. She stays out of the casino and avoids places on the ship where smoking is allowed.

On Freedom, our family was on our balcony one evening. Cigarette smoke wafting from the next balcony triggered an asthma attack that put mom in serious medical jeopardy for several hours. A trip to the ship's doctor, a few nebulizer treatments and steroids helped her make it through the rest of the trip.

Dad knocked on the door of the cabin next door and a lovely couple said they were sorry and agreed they would not smoke on the balcony again. He did not think it was necessary to report them.

Though it may be rare, sometimes the issue is a medical one.

HI,

so here is my question.... You said that you don't want to disturb anyone...(forget about the fact that it is simply not allowed)... If someone asked you to stop, would you? or are you trying to weigh whether the potential consequences are worth the risk? I know it kinda sucks. my buddy who I always sail with loved to smoke cigarettes on the balcony but now, with the new rules, it's simply not worth it.. he just goes to the casino...

If someone asked you to stop, would you?

ABSOLUTELY!

I would apologize for disturbing them... And I'd probably offer to buy them a drink for their trouble!

I'm not sitting here saying I want to disregard people's comfort. I'm simply asking.. who has smoked and been approached about it??

I enjoy an occasional cigar, and I like the smell them. There are time when I might like to enjoy a cigar on my balcony, but there are times when I just want to enjoy the sea air. The problem is, if you are smoking a cigar when I just want some fresh air on my balcony, then you are infringing on my enjoyment. Conversely, if you are smoking in a designated area, and I walk by and start complaining, then I am infringing upon your enjoyment of your stogie. Your best bet is to follow the rules and smoke only where allowed, and for people who don't want to smell smoke to stay away from the designated areas where it is allowed.

It OBVIOUSLY DOES create a problem - otherwise, RCI would not have Banned it.

...........

And you would pay a $250 fine the first time - be kicked off the ship the second offense.

I REALLY miss my "Cigar on the Balcony" around 12:30 or 1:00 after all the lounges have closed down. I LOVED it too.

But........

Now I go up to the pool deck where I belong - it's not that much different.

Doesn't matter as to whether it bothers anyone or not. Smoking a cigar on the balcony is a violation of the rules and is subject to severe penalties.

"Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom and any stateroom balcony. This applies to all stateroom categories onboard. If a guest is in violation of this stateroom policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPass® account and may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy."

OP don't listen to the naysayers. I asked a very similar question a couple weeks ago about smoking on the balconies and I could almost hear the angry mob standing outside my house with a crucifix. But what little information I could gather from the useful posts while disregarding the keyboard warriors is that RCCL is very strict about the no smoking policy. If you're caught you will have to pay the USD250 fine. From reports it looks like you get 2 warnings, and the 3rd strike you're out. I feel it's best to play it safe and make the trek to the designated smoking areas.

I too, however, want to know if anyone has done this and gotten away with it.

FFS. The man(?) asked a simple question, which no-one seems to be answering - did you do it and what exactly happened if/when you were caught. He's not said he's "trying to get away with anything", he's asked if anyone has first hand experience of the consequences.

Anecdotes and reminders of the rules are fine (it is a discussion board), but don't answer the question that was asked, yet people are acting as if the OP should just toddle along because the mob have spoken.

And what's this rubbish?

the smoker denied smoking and the cabin was inspected by security for the scent of smoke, even clothing inspected for it.

A smoker's clothes are going to smell of smoke whether they smoked on their balcony, in the casino or in the designated smoking areas. I seriously doubt that security are going to go around sniffing people's knickers "just in case".

You're right - I was so irked that I just went off on a rant. Sadly/gladly (depending on your point of view) I have never smoked on my balcony, and have no first hand experience of the consequences. But neither am I parroting the rule book, or telling the story of the time I had my neighbours keelhauled for smelling of smoke within 100 yards of me. ;)

lt223 was just asking about first hand experience, just like, "have you ever been called to the naughty room, etc." So, if you have first hand experience, please comment.

Is this really a true question??????? I love cigars, and I do mean I love Cigars, but after quilting smoking more than 30 years ago, I often wonder how badly I smelled, and yes even what I put many people through for my pleasure. It has always amazed me, after I quit smoking how far away you can smell the tobacco smoke.

I walked into the so called cigar lounge on the Freedom(I think) just to be nosey, the one in the hall way to a forward lounge, and with in seconds, I almost got sick/nauseous from the smoke, even though they do a good job of ventilating the place.

I was not the smoker, but was on the balcony next to him. Reported it. First the cabin steward was sent to remind him of no smoking. Then the supervisor went later in the day to reinforce the policy. I knew both employees and they both checked with me after. I also received two calls from guest services following up on this. In addition we were doing b2b and on the final day we received a letter from guest services giving us credits for future cruises. This was last December on the Liberty. So in this instance the smoker was informed and I was asked twice if I noticed him doing it anymore.
