Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #227 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Even though I haven’t mentioned this in the review yet, I had been waiting for this morning all cruise long. Each cruise, the house keeping staff will cover the lido deck with towel animals and dub it "the towel animal takeover." I have always missed it, but I would not let it be a repeat of the previous 3 cruises. I set my alarm for 6:15am and turned on the stateroom TV and put on the Lido Deck webcam channel. I could see the little white towels on some of the chairs so I got ready and went up to take some pictures. At this time of morning, I was expecting the ship to be pretty much empty especially for the last sea day. People are tired by this point in a busy cruise. But nope, the Lido Market Place was quite packed will all older people. On I went to the main pool. I arrived a little before 6:45 and everything looked like it was still untouched. The house keeping staff did a marvelous job. Frogs at the Red Frog Pub Iguanas at the Blue Iguana Tequila Bar
Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #228 Share Posted October 12, 2015 These were so nice, the pictures could have went on forever. After a little time on the open deck, I went back to bed.
Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #229 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Sea Day Brunch Menu Matt and I decided to try the Sea Day Brunch held in the dining room. If you have ever been on a Carnival cruise, you probably know how painfully slow the brunch can be. I always attributed this to an old Carnival perk. If you were a returning guest, in a VIFP Red level or higher, you were able to get a free alcoholic drink at the Sea Day Brunch. They have since removed that from the perks. So with that in mind, we figured brunch would be far less busy and lead to faster service. And we were right on one hand. There were not a lot of people there at all when we arrived. I don't want to say it was empty, but more than half of the seats were still open. If Carnival still offered the free drink, there wouldn’t have been an open seat in sight, so that was a huge plus. We thought less people, more prompt service, but that wasn't the case. It was slower than ever before. Why oh why does this brunch have to get dragged out? We were in there for almost two hours. We were seated at a table for two even, so it’s not like we had to wait for others to finish. And then on top of it all, I didn't even receive the right food (it wasn’t a big deal as it was easily corrected, but still). Even with the slow service, the food was very good. I just wish something could be done about the speed. What is it about brunch that makes time move at a stand still? Anyway, like I said, the food was good. Here is the pastry basket they usually bring you (but this time we had to ask for). For appetizers I ordered the fresh fruit platter-plain .The fruit tasted, well, like fresh fruit. Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #230 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Matt ordered the eggs benedict and one chocolate chip pancake. Both were good and the eggs benedict was of higher quality than the one that is often served at the Lido Buffet breakfast. I had the funnest french toast with Frosted Flakes. As was expected, it was really, really sweet. And since I initially assumed service would be prompt due to the lack of guests I, for the first time, ordered dessert at brunch. Matt had the double chocolate brownie and I had the banana cream pie. The brownie's description didn't mention nuts, but the brownie came with nuts so beware. Since Matt isn't a fan of nuts, he didn't eat any of it really, which was unfortunate. It was all way too much food and I was so full at the end. But it was good and the environment was nice to be in, away from the busyness of the Lido Marketplace.
Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #231 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Around 10am we went to the Serenity deck. Yep, all seats by the pool taken. No surprise really, it was almost 10am. We went to the top deck of Serenity and laid there and relaxed for nearly 6 hours. That was the highlight of the day time. I did, however, get up right at 10. The Fun Shops were having a sail on Port of Call T-shirts. They had put the t-shirts on preview earlier in the cruise and I really have to say, they looked nice. The colors were super vibrant and didn’t look cheesy at all. So off I went…and so did everyone else on the cruise ship. Deck 5 was mobbed with people, all looking at these shirts. Don’t get me wrong, they were nice but jeeze, not this nice. I only had my cell phone but I snapped two quick pics of the scene. I didn’t want or need the shirts that badly so I passed on buying them. The price wasn’t that great, either. 5 for $50 or $17 each (I think). 5 for $50 was a great deal but I didn’t need 5 t-shirts. A short while later I retuned to the Serenity deck. We needed to check in for our return flight home the next day. Prior to the cruise I debated on whether or not I would purchase Carnival’s very affordable internet package. Ultimately I decided not to, as one of the aspects that made me fall so in love with cruising, was the seclusion from what was going on in the world. However for today, one day only, I did buy the package solely to check in. Let me remind you of the rates. I purchased the Value Plan for one day. Here is a screen shot from my phone of the log in page. And the free sites
Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #232 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Now here is a little discrepancy and, unfortunately, I don’t know the answer. The Social Media plan on the brochure below lists the websites that are included. This plan wouldn't work because I needed to visit an airline's website. I had to buy the Value Plan in order to have access. However, if I had read the text on the screen shots in the previous post, I would have noticed the Social Media plan here covers airline website check in. So ultimately, I do not know the answer. I’ll admit, I did use the internet a little for some other things besides checking in. I checked in at home, looked at a few social media sites and did some very light, casual web browsing. The speed was pretty good, just a little slow at times. Online check in for the airline went smoothly as well. I did not upload or try to send any pictures so, I do not know how large file transfers would go. So we spent a very large portion of the day on the Serenity deck. I was able to fall asleep which is rare for me to do on an open deck, but it was very calm and peaceful up there today. I eventually moved into a clamshell and spent some time in there just people watching. Unfortunately for you guys, the day was pretty uneventful and I have nothing to really report on. I did get this guy for lunch today though. And here is a random sailboat. I thought it was a nice pic, though. Other than that, that’s it for the afternoon. Let’s fast forward to dinner. Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #233 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Here are the final menus. For an appetizer, Matt had the New England Crab Cake and I had the Mango Cream (soup). I tried a bite of Matt's crab cake, and the version they serve in the Steakhouse is far superior in taste and texture. Before And After
Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #234 Share Posted October 12, 2015 For our entrees- Matt’s bacon mac 'n cheese (b.m.c.) was very good. My tender roasted prime rib of American beef au jus. Yum. For dessert Matt had one final Warm Chocolate Melting Cake and I had the Cappuccino Pie. After dinner, unfortunately there is not much left to report on. It consisted of packing and more packing. We did attend one last show in the Liquid Lounge, Epic Rock. It was a really great show and very action-packed. The lead singer, Sam, did a really great job. I think not only myself, but the whole audience really enjoyed the show. I could have done without the crying newborn baby infront of me at a 9:15 showing, but oh well. It was a great show, though, go check it out. I guess one final picture of the cruise, just to show you how far we had gone. :) And Clarience’s final presenation. Up Next: Disembarkation Day. Crowbirds Posted October 12, 2015 #235 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Thanks again Sean for your wonderful blog. Seany527 Posted October 12, 2015 Author #236 Share Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) Disembarking- This, along with your Customs Declaration form, will be left the day prior in your Stateroom. So, for the first time we wanted to try self-assist. This is when you do not put your bags outside of your room the night before disembarkation and, instead, wheel them off the ship yourself. This was a delight. It was so easy, and in doing so, it makes you one of the first people off the ship and then you are able to avoid the long lines of Customs. Over all, there isn’t much to report on this day either so I will just give a few tips before I give a final rating of the cruise as a whole and the score. We picked up the liquor we purchased on Grand Turk from the Sunrise Restaurant right around 6:45am. The line was very short and we were in and out in no time. I had read previously on here that people would wait in line for over 30 minutes, so I was very thankful the wait was no more than 5 minutes. So once we stepped foot off the ship, it was about 15 minutes until we had passed Customs and reached the outside. The Alamo shuttle van was waiting for us. We waited for it to fill up, which was about another 5 minutes and, before we knew it, we were in our rental car. We had a 7pm flight which gave us some time to enjoy Florida a little more. For those looking for things to do without a full day, I would recommend checking out International Drive. I won’t go into much detail because this a cruise review and not a central Florida review, but for things to do on a budget and a lot of fun- head to the new idrive 360. We did the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum as well as the Orlando Eye. They are both located in the same building and I think the total cost was about $30 per person. If you have extra time like we did, about a 15 minute walk away is Wonderworks, which is another cool little place to stop. If anyone has any other questions about these attractions, let me know. NCTribeFan Posted October 12, 2015 #240 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Did Sunshine and Valor have a "horn off" when you were leaving? We had that in GT when I was on Conquest (Nov 2013) and Glory was docked next to us (twins other than no Serenity Deck on Conquest). It poured rain that morning so I went back to the ship early. Standing at the rail, I could talk with people on Glory without even needing to yell, we were so close! Question about the "quiet" end of GT - I always go down there, but in early June, nearly all the loungers were gone! If I hadn't been there early, I wouldn't have gotten a seat. Next time, we're arriving 2nd and if they haven't replenished the loungers, I'll be out of luck. :( I've only purchased the internet plan once, on Freedom 11/29/14 and I bought the Value plan just so I could do my airline check-in on the last morning. So, if I really CAN do that using the Social plan, that's what I'll do. Will be interesting to see if the plan is still only $25 for an 11-night sailing. Hope so! My last few cruises, there were still loads of people dragging tons of luggage off the ship after Platinum non-self-assist were already leaving. I love the little kids who are trying to control suitcases that are bigger than they are and repeatedly running over your heels. I did it once and will never do it again. I'm just not in that much of a hurry to get home. ;)
marshhawk Posted October 12, 2015 #241 Share Posted October 12, 2015 Thank you for a great and very thorough review. It did take me two days to read. LOL! Very pretty ship, nice to see all the pictures. We have been looking at this particular cruise for 2017. and had not seriously consider this particular ship, but you brought life and knowledge into the review, so it may be the Sunshine. Thanks! NCTribeFan Posted October 12, 2015 #245 Share Posted October 12, 2015 I never, ever just stay on the ship. But I've been to GT probably more times than Nassau now (past 4 cruises have called there), and I don't hang out at Margaritaville or Jack's Shack. I'm hoping they have some Throw-Back Journeys activities on board that day. Or it might be just about my only chance to hang out at the Serenity Deck
crusinpsychRN Posted October 12, 2015 #246 Share Posted October 12, 2015 The towel animal explosion always brings a smile. Seany527 Posted October 13, 2015 Author #247 Share Posted October 13, 2015 Summary, Conclusion and Final Score Food- Out of my four Carnival Cruises, the Sunshine has the best food by far. It was always hot when it was supposed to be hot and it was always cold when it was suppose to…oh wait that last part is not true, but who cares. There were so many dining options to choose from and I always left mentally wanting more, but physically unable to eat another thing (for the most part). The breakfast buffet featured some great items (like the biscuits with sausage gravy) and the always-tasty breakfast potatoes, even though I never saw those mini hash browns once :(. The Lunch buffet was always exceptional as well. They always had some staple items we could count on, like the chicken tenders, in addition to some different rotating items which kept things interesting. Cucina del Capitano was a real treat at lunch time and I wish it were available on more ships. If I sail on a ship without it going forward, it will be missed. Then there was Guys Burger Joint and Mongolian Wok. Guys Burgers were always top notch and the toppings bar made it customizable. And speaking of customizable, Mongolian Wok never failed to disappoint. Now for dinner, the food was good as well. Sometimes not devine, but not once did I eat something that was disgusting or unedible. The only draw backs I can really say that influenced the points were the freshness. At times in the buffet, the trays of food would be practically empty and people would pick through grabbing what they could. I understand it's hard to keep up with the demand at a busy time, and in that case, just remove the tray of food and explain more is on the way. So for food, I would rate a 95% or 19 out of 20 points. Entertainment— First the Playlist Production Team- What started out weak at the Welcome Aboard Show sprung to life more and more as the cruise went on. Studio VIP and Epic Rock were both top notch. Even though I’m not a fan of the new style shows, the cast really did do a great job and kept things interesting. Fly on entertainers- This would include the two variety shows (Magician and Juggler) as well as the comedians. The lines were long each time I went to see a comedian so I unfortunately can not rate them. Therefore, they will have no impact on this portion. The Magician overall was good but, like I said previously, I wouldn’t stop what I was currently doing to go see him. The juggler, sorry, but that was painful to sit through. Live entertainment- Carnival has got something with “The In Crowd.” They were a great band with high energy and amazing vocals. They did an excellent job at engaging the crowd and kept an upbeat attitude. If I had never been on a cruise, I would have rated the entertainment pretty high on the Sunshine. But I can’t forget my previous two cruises that did not feature Playlist Productions and how great they were. And the fly on entertainment on those cruises were also very enjoyable. Nonetheless, “The In Crowd” will save the day and the Sunshine will receive a score of 80% or 12 out of 15 points. Service- Service was very good on the Sunshine and I would say the most personalized out of any Carnival Cruise. Clarence, our room steward, was super friendly and very kind. At times I felt bad for him because of how hard he works. Our room was always cleaned after we returned from our morning activities and, after dinner our towel animal always awaited us. I also can’t forget about Theo and his team in the Sunrise Restaurant. They were fast, fast, fast. If you enjoy quick, but still personalized and friendly, service I would recommend requesting to be in Theo’s section. But of course there were some draw backs, both at Cucina and Ji Ji. I don’t really need to go into those again but it should have been handled differently. There was also the highly uncomfortable moments when security came to our room (and although it may not be service, it still dealt with those in the service industry, so that’s going here too). Although not mentioned in the review earlier, there was a time I was completely ignored at the Serenity bar. I was the only guest there and next thing I knew all of the bartenders walked away...and so did I. And lastly, when I pay for Faster to the Fun, I want to receive the perk of my room being ready upon boarding and not walking into a room that has the water running and bath towels scattered around the room. But anyway, Theo and Clarence will save the day as well as Joe from the Java Blue and Shakira from Ocean Plaza, and score the Carnival Sunshine an 85% or 12.75 our of 15 in the Service Category. Decor and Ambiance- Carnival does a great job here in decorating and making each area on the ship different in its own way. The Red Frog Pub has a great Florida Keys feel, while the Alchemy Bar just a few steps away does a perfect job at creating the 1920’s pharmacy vibe. I also really enjoy the colors in the stateroom. Blue tones really brighten it up as oppsed to the browns and oranges of previous Carnival Ships. The Sunrise Restaurant is beautiful, again with its different shades of blue. The glowing “suns” in the center of the room really add to the mood as well. At night, Cucina del Capitano transforms into an Italian restaurant with the traditional white and red checkered table cloths, adding to the whole effect. Carnival does a nice job in this aspect. 90% or 9 out of 10 points. Venues- The Carnival Sunshine has it all. No, really, it does have it all. Every 2.0 upgrade. Each venue or spot on the ship offers something different, whether it be the majestic waterfall on the Serenity Deck or the three waterslides at Water Works. This section could go on forever, but since I wrote about each venue during the review I will summarize very briefly here. The outdoor spaces, although lacking dining options, are truly special. The Lido Pool was great with the built in cabanas, and enough positive things can not be said about the beauty of the Serenity Deck up front. In the aft, it was all excitement with Water Works and Sports Square. Inside, Ocean Plaza was hit, the Atrium was alive with its bright sun and music, and the venues on the lower deck 4 Promenade did not disappoint either; all adding up to a 95% or 9.5 out of 10 points. Onboard Activies- As much as I enjoyed what I did, there wasn’t a whole lot to choose from during the day. I would have liked to have seen more trivia and more karaoke. If that’s not something you’re into, then this portion really will have no effect. The dance classes, and there were a good amount of those, appeared to be fun but lacked organization and not much could be taken away from them. It was average and in the middle, therefore a score of 50% or 5 out of 10 points. Cabin- Stateroom 5342 was great. The balcony was huge and the room itself showed little signs of aging. The location was perfect, the temperature was spot on, and the balcony was a delight. Oh wait I already said that. It came with a mini fridge and a key pad safe, both of which are important to me. Trust me, if you have the opportunity to book 5342 as I would highly recommend it. There were no negatives other than the lack of an interactive TV (but that’s amongst all staterooms on the Sunshine). I can confidently give this category a 100% or 10 out of 10. Ports- Grand Turk was a repeat port and the lack of sun did put a damper on the day a little. Not Carnival’s fault, so I can’t knock them there. Curacao was my favorite port, and I can’t wait to return some day. I felt welcome by the people and it was almost like I was singled out by the locals as they wanted to ensure I enjoyed myself in their home country. Even the man I mentioned earlier who was selling water had a great attitude. And I can’t leave out Shelia from Irie Tours. She was perfect. Now onto Aruba. Aruba was nice, but I feel I was cheated out of time with the late departure and late returning excursion I booked through Carnival, serviced by Red Sail Sports. I was also cheated out of day light hours; not Carnival’s fault, but they can do something about a 1pm arrival time after 2 full sea days. If it wasn’t for Curacao, the Ports category would have received an abysmal score. Curacao is something special, but I can not forget about my disappointment in Aruba- ranking this category 40% or 2 out of 5 points. Pay for Extra’s- This category will consist of everything extra on the Sunshine not included in the fare of the Cruise. So in this case; the excursions as well as the three specialty dining restaurants, the Shake Spot and the alcoholic drinks. So let’s go in order- the excursions. As I said, Red Sail Sports did a horrible job at representing their company. I would avoid them like the plague. Irie Tours on the other hand… I think it was the best $25 I ever spent (seriously!). All of the Specialty Restaurants were a success in my book and well worth the upcharge. If you’re on a budget, I would recommend Ji Ji and Matt, the Steakhouse. My least favorite was Cucina and his least favorite was Ji Ji. So that just goes to show everyone’s palet is different. I guess you will have to experience them for yourself. The Shake Spot was always good and the service was personalized thanks to Joe. It was less than $5 for a shake so I would recommended trying it at least once. But you should do so at the end of the cruise because once you have one, you will definitely want another. Lastly the alcoholic drinks. The price of these add up fast and for the most part, they were good. I had the Cheers! program on a previous cruise, so I was able to sample pretty much all of the drinks. Therefore, on the Sunshine, I knew what to order and what to stay away from. Carnival does offer some pretty fun, creative drinks. Try a few out and see what you like. One of my favorites if the frozen BBC. So now for the rating- Since I already knocked points away in the previous category because of the Red Sail Sports excursion, I won’t do it again here. Drinks are always overpriced so I can’t fault Carnival for that. Overall, I felt the extra money spent on board was well worth it, giving this category an 85% of 4.25 out of 5. The weighted average gives the Carnival Sunshine an 84%. When I think back now and reflect on the entire cruise, I only remmber the enjoyable parts, so a score of 84% does seem rather low. But when I break things down accordingly, 84% seems adequate. I would for certain sail on the Sunshine again and would always choose a cabin on deck 5. Because there were so many sea days, I felt the balcony was worth the extra money. Had this been a port-intensive cruise, a window room would have sufficed (I think). What’s next? To start, I have always taken the reviews on here for granted and never understood the amount of time, effort, and work people put into writing them. This was a huge undertaking, much more that I ever could have imagined. Did I enjoy writing it though? Eh, it was fine. But before the cruise, I said I would do it and I never go back on my word. It took up a huge amount of time but I hope it does benefit people in providing answers I was unable to find, especially with the Specialty Restaurants and your initial navigation around the ports. So, with that being said, my next cruise will be on the Norwegian Getaway. It will be my first time sailing on NCL and from what I have read, the entertainment is very good. I’m really looking forward to quality shows and more specialty restaurants. I hope I do like NCL because I’ll be trying them again on the Breakaway. I really enjoy sailing out of New York as it's so convenient and easy for me. Then lastly, I’ll be back to Carnival for the all-new Vista. It also will be a Journey's Cruise, so I am definitely looking forward to that one. At this point I’m unsure if I will do a review on any or all of them. Only time will tell… Thank you so much for reading this Sunshine review. All of your positive comments along the way have been very enjoyable to read. If anyone has any questions, just ask. I have so much more to share that I just couldn’t fit in the review. Thanks again to everyone who has written a review before me. You have all been a great contribution to Cruise Critic.
