Diamond Princess

The link between Noro and the lack of sanitisers on the ship is none existent. The hand sanitiser does not affect the noro virus. The only sure way to get rid of the Noro virus is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, before and after every meal as well as after using the bathroom. Cruise staff cannot enforce that unless they install sinks at all restaurants and force each person to use it.

Majority of the time there is zero link between the ship and noro, its all the passengers. Unless of course the ship gets trapped with the Noro for several cruises, which would usually indicate lack of cleaning of the ship, which in 99.99% of cases is not the issue.

We were on Royal Princess in June they had two sinks for hand washing in the entrance to the buffet restaurant, they asked everyone to wash their hands. However you always get those people who who for some strange reason think that coming in contact with water or sanitizer will have a fatal effect on them. They can't all be the wicked witch of the west. :-)

Its always been around, and is prevalent where people gather in numbers.

At least with more publicity, hopefully more people will become aware of Noro and take steps to prevent its spread.

Yep, although I doubt the ship wouldn't be washing their lettuces. In addition, they wouldn't be buying the pre-packaged bags of leaves.

Thats something Gut would say.

That's it blame poor old Gut, hard done by bloke that he is.

Now if Mic had said, "I ea meat cause I've got big feet" or "I eat steak 'cause I ain't no fake" you might have a point, but it's Mrs Gut what eats Wabbit food.

One of the interesting design features with Quantum is that on entry to the buffet they have installed sinks, and you are now directed into there on entry to wash your hands. Well designed!

Good to see that they are starting to install them on new ships. I had no idea that these actually existed on the new ships. I will get to check how it works when I am on the Ovation then, see how is works out.

Yes, I will check out the Explorer next week and see what it would take to get basins into the windjammer if they do a refurbishment. Other wise it will be the Ovation at the end of the year.

My 80 year old mother came off this cruise. She started to feel ill a few days before arrival in Sydney but put it down to her heart/lung condition. She stayed in her cabin and took it easy, her travel companion taking food to her so she could rest. Mum ended up in the medical centre the last evening on oxygen and being told she had the flu. Over $350 later she was given cough mixture and sent back to her cabin. Within hours of leaving the ship she ended up in the emergency dept of our local hospital, after tests she was diagnosed with norovirus and admitted into quarantine for 3 days and two nights. Her respiratory specialist told mum the virus can be in the body for 4 days before you become ill. So there may be many others out there who have come done with Noro since leaving the cruise. Not to mention the people who have been in contact with them since.

She is still very weak from the ordeal. This was supposed to be a 'dream' last cruise as she feels she is getting too old and sick to take any more. Very disappointing and a huge downer on her memories of this trip, particularly since she had observed people who were obviously sick wondering around the ship including the buffet and announcements coming over requesting particular passengers to return to their cabins immediately - very selfish people, you could have killed my mother with her existing health conditions! The medical staff should have taken precautions to eliminate the possibility that mum had the virus and not the flu as they had suggested.

Thanks for sharing, I hope your mother recovers fully soon.

People can be very selfish but then you don't need to go on a cruise to know that, these people are everywhere.:(

Explorer just had her refurbishment. Also, that's not the kind of thing they'll spend money on to make changes, in a rapid turnaround for a refurb. Only re-purposing or dedicated revenue changes.

That's so sad about your mum, I hope as time passes she remembers only the good. Perhaps as your mother had respiratory symptoms, they focused on that being more flu like rather than the noro, particularly if she wasn't vomiting or had the runs. I hope she regains all her strength quickly

The regal princess has this as well. Unfortunately noro ALWAYS gets sensationalized by the media. I will do what i normally do and wash my hands constantly on the ship

That is the best thing to do. :D

The radio this morning has turned the Noro issue on cruises into the Salmonella scare with salads and is advocating no one cruise. Media not letting facts get in the way of a good story. :(

The nursing home where my MIL is has several episodes of noro. The home is a small facility with a total of 90 or so residents and every few months there is an outbreak of noro. If you look at that in proportion to the number of passengers on a typical cruiseship, noro probably occurs more often in the nursing home than on one particular ship.

Oooh. Cheaper fares maybe.

My mum's nursing home had a gastro lockdown for a week 2 months ago. They did not call it noro.

My niece was hospitalised in Perth with noro - they cant work out where she caught it except maybe from a grocery trolley handle.

Really dislike the media trend of sensationalising everything - even things we took in our stride a few years ago have become major incidents today.
