Burial at sea/scattering ashes

Why are you making this such a big deal, ashes look like ashes. Don't call anyone, don't ask anyone, it is your private moment, go to the stern and scatter the ashes in the sea, god bless.

 

Yeah, and take a big chance of being thrown off the ship at the next port for throwing something overboard. Wow, just when I think ive read and seen it all here.OP, I know you wont but PLEASE do not pay attention to this very idiotic and TERRIBLE advice. Someone just had to be insensitive today i guess.

 

So sorry for your loss :( and I hope your ceremony goes perfectly.

It's not just today. I have that member blocked due to past comments similar to this.

I appreciate your post: I have cremations I someday will part with. I plan to do this on CCL...I'm just not ready yet. I sincerely hope your trip brings you the peace you deserve.

Yes, it's called the "ignore list" and you can add CC member names to it. Find it under your "User Control Panel" and then "Edit Options". ;)

My condolences for your loss.

I didn't see any reference to what type of container you have for your Sister's cremains.

We were going to commit my Father's cremains to sea, this past November. You MUST have a biodegradable urn to do this, or a biodegradable bag, to commit her ashes overboard. Google biodegradable cremation urns, and you will find many options available. I was able to find a company, about 50 miles from my home, that custom manufactures urns for sea burials. It looks like a pillow and would be very easy to carry on. Cost was about $125.

Mom decided, she didn't want him to go alone, so, Dad is at home with her.

When the time comes, my Brother and I, will get a pillow for her and commit them together.

I am scrambling a bit on this....called a funeral home here in Brunswick, GA and they could not guarantee delivery by Monday. I have a list of places to call tomorrow, here in Brunswick and down the line to the Jaxport Cruiseport Terminal. Fingers crossed!

Yes, typically the Environmental Officer will escort the party to the after mooring deck where you can celebrate the person's life in your own fashion and drop the urn and flowers in the ship's wake.

The Environmental Officer is present to act not only as escort in crew areas, but to ensure that nothing that is not biodegradable goes over the side. I've heard folks say they have scattered the ashes, but that isn't common, as the wind on the stern is pretty unpredictable, and you wouldn't want the ashes blowing back onboard. A biodegradable urn is more common.

We did not have a biodegradable urn. We had our ashes in a plastic bag from the funeral home. We just poured them out into the sea. We didn't have any blowback. Of course, we didn't spread all the ashes, just a portion that we had them separate for us to bring. So it may be different if spreading the whole amount, since it is quite a bit usually.

On the Miracle the ceremony was held aft 3, behind the upper MDR. Of course, maintenance was being done. The workers stood back and waited for us to finish.

Some of your stories made me tear up a bit. I think there are ninjas in my office cutting onions. I wish the very best in your ceremony and hope that it brings you a sense of peace.

 

 

Thank you for your kind words.....she loved dolphins and the ocean and I am so blessed to be able to do this for her.

UPDATE:

I called another funeral home here in Brunswick, GA and they have the correct biodegradable urn for burial at sea. Apparently some are made for fresh water and others for salt water. The cost is only $60.00 which is a blessing due to such short notice.

 

I am no longer stressing at all. I downloaded one of her favorite songs and written her a poem. In addition to myself & my best friend, a 5 foot Kermit the frog will be attending her farewell. He has brought much laughter & joy over the years to our family. Kermie, as we call him, has been in our family since the 90's and he attended my father's funeral in 2004 and my mother's funeral last year. My sister died suddenly 4 months after momma died and I only had the funds at the time for a direct cremation. I am so grateful to be able to let her rest with the dolphins which she so loved.

Your cabin will be available to you after 1-1:30. Lots of luggage space under the beds.

 

We scattered cremains last October for a mother and son.

Cremains have to be carried on. We had both in a rolling suitcase. Only issue was the security X-ray gal hadn't seen them before.

 

Once onboard, see Guest Services. Make sure you have the proper paperwork. We were contacted quickly with the time of the scattering. They try to do this the first sea day, ours was postponed a few days due to weather and sea conditions.

At the appointed time we met back at Guest Services and escorted to the back of the ship by Purser, Security and Environmental officers. We were allowed as much time as needed. A friend took pictures. A few days later we were given a ship's certificate with the coordinates of where the cremains were scattered.

We used something like this https://www.inthelighturns.com/peaceful-pillow-urns.html. It was easy to use, no need to open it up.

 

We had booked a cruise in May 2015 for a cruise in June, 2016. In June 2015 we found out my husband had bile duct cancer. He was so looking forward to going his 11th cruise with Carnival. He passed away in April 2016 so we postponed our cruise til June 2017. He loved to cruise. I would so love to scatter some of his ashes in the ocean. My question is, do you have to contact Carnival before the cruise or once you get on the ship just go to Guest Services? Obviously we will need a death certificate, but what else will we need, if anything else?
