FloriDan Posted August 27, 2017 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2017 On our first cruise, earlier this year on Enchantment OTS, there was occasionally a rather robust unpleasant aroma that seemed to be coming from the (clean, unused) toilet. As we're getting ready for our second cruise, I'm wondering if this sort of thing is an unusual occurrence, or if it's just something that's to be expected. We bought some scented bath salts in Nassau and put a cup in the bathroom and that seemed to help. If it's a normal thing, do you do anything to combat it? Rare Keith1010 Posted August 27, 2017 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2017 It is not normal unless there was some problem with their system. My guess that was the case. Keith
Rare LHT28 Posted August 27, 2017 #3 Share Posted August 27, 2017 Could be the drain in the floor causing the smell to seep in Try pouring some water in the drain & if the smell persists report it to housekeeping so they can get it checked out
cruzincurt Posted August 27, 2017 #4 Share Posted August 27, 2017 Usually there is a floor drain near or behind the toilet to catch shower overflow. Perhaps it dried out and needed a bit of water poured in. Sent from my B3-A30 using Forums mobile app
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 27, 2017 #5 Share Posted August 27, 2017 If you have it again I would just report it right away. Let them figure it out. Hopefully that will not be the case. Keith
Krazy Kruizers Posted August 27, 2017 #6 Share Posted August 27, 2017 This is not normal. In all of our years cruising, only once did we encounter a smell in the bathroom. Called the front office, they sent up maintenance, cleaned out the drain -- all was normal after that.
klfrodo Posted August 27, 2017 #7 Share Posted August 27, 2017 Notice under your kitchen sink and bathroom sink,,, that U shape piping for the drain? That U is there for a reason and it's not to catch your wedding ring when it falls into the drain. That U is there for the very reason you are explaining. The U fills with water. The water in the U blocks gases and smells from coming back into your livings spaces. When the drains are not used that often, that water in the U evaporates and the odors are able to seep back into your living quarters. Just poor some water into the floor drains, turn on the sink for a while, and flush your commodes,,,, and your problem will most likely go away. cb at sea Posted August 27, 2017 #8 Share Posted August 27, 2017 While it's not "normal", it is common! Ship's plumbing is different from land-based plumbing...the pouring water down the drains can certainly help, and keeping drain plugs closed can help, too. We once had this issue for almost an entire week. Yes, it's annoying!
FloriDan Posted August 27, 2017 Author #9 Share Posted August 27, 2017 Thanks, y'all! With it being our first cruise, we didn't know what to expect. It never really dawned on me to ask anybody to see if it could be fixed. And it wasn't always bad but it was noticeable starting on our second morning. Makes sense it could have been a dry drain. Always report issues to your room steward or Guest Services. Cannot tell you how many times we've reported iced-over fridges, door issues, plumbing issues, odd light happenings. Some the steward should have caught but others they wouldn't know about. Previous pax could have reported these but didn't. :(
easyboy Posted August 27, 2017 #12 Share Posted August 27, 2017 We once encountered a similar smell. We called the attention of the cabin steward. It was gone the following day. We didn't bother asking the steward if it was a cleaning issue or maintenance. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
