There have been three Nieuw Amsterdam's prior to the current one, number four:

Nieuw Amsterdam I (1906-1932) First quadruple expansion engined HAL liner and last fitted with emergency sails

Nieuw Amsterdam II (1938-1973) Holland's "ship of state" known as the Darling of the Dutch

Nieuw Amsterdam III (1983-2000) The first of the two "N"-class ships, still sailing today as Marella (renamed fromThomson) Spirit

Standing on a chair on your balcony to wave; not a bright idea

Summer, 1971 in New York at Pier 40, I was able to make a ship visit prior to Nieuw Amsterdam II's trans-Atlantic sailing (when that was still possible for the general public). A beautiful Art Deco interior; I still remember the ceiling of the First Class Dining Room and the dark wood paneling of the Jungle Bar. I only wish I could have sailed on her.
