Bcamp83 Posted April 21, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 21, 2018 We are cruising on UniWorld from Basel to Amsterdam in late May. Any suggestions of things to do in Basel?
Traveling Library Posted April 21, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 21, 2018 The Tinguely Museum is a hoot and his work is all over the city.
jklc123 Posted April 21, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 21, 2018 You may already know this, but if you stay in a hotel in the city, you can have freepasses for the tram, which would get you to several of the museums there. We had a day and a half before the Uniworld cruise and ended up just exploring the Old Town on foot, attending Sunday service at the cathedral and strolling along the Rhine. whatnot Posted April 22, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 22, 2018 We spent 3 days in Basel after our Uniworld Rhine Cruise. The free trams were great to get around the city. We also used them to get to the train station where we took the train to Lucerne for the day and return. Very easy to do and a fun day. We also rented a car for a day and drove through the countryside to Gruyers where we explored the cute village, visited the Gruyer Cheese factory and a chocolate factory. Lots to do if you do your research!

swixpat Posted April 22, 2018 #6 Share Posted April 22, 2018 If you’re interested in architecture and design, the vitra design museum in Weil am Rhein is well worth it. It can be reached by public transport. And check out the Fondation Beyeler for the current exhibition. It is in Riehen, which is a part of Basel really. Stunning museum and often incredible shows. Again, accessible by public transport. The countryside south of Basel is great for walking and hiking with beautiful views. Rolling hills (part of Jura mountains), green, lots of fruit trees in bloom in spring. Look for “Basel Land” and places like Waldenburg or Gelterkinden or Aesch. Short and frequent train journey from Basel. Cannot be beaten on a beautiful day.
E316 Posted April 22, 2018 #7 Share Posted April 22, 2018 We are taking the Uniworld cruise ending in Basel. I know on the day of departure you have to give up your room early. We want to explore the city before we leave Basel for Zurich? Therefore we would want to ask Uniworld to hold our luggage. How long will they hold it? Would we be able to have lunch on board before we leave for Zurich? Elyce Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

English Voyager Posted April 23, 2018 #11 Share Posted April 23, 2018 The Tatoo looks spectacular! As it's programme is more varied, I prefer it to the Edinburgh Tattoo. For example, in 2016 a Japanese marching team was, for me, a particular highlight: Appearing in this year's Basel programme is my favourite Top Secret Drum Corps:

Denny01 Posted April 28, 2018 #14 Share Posted April 28, 2018 We are looking at a river cruise from Basel to Amsterdam. Your thread makes Basel sound very interesting. Our original plan was to visit Prague for 3-4 days, then train to Munich for 3-4 days again, and then train to Rome to catch a Celebrity Edge E Med Cruise. But our friends are dropping out of the cruise portion, so we are relooking at options. May still do the Czech/Munich portion, but then catch a river cruise up to Amsterdam either leaving from Munich area or Basel latter reading this thread. Have only done one river cruise with Viking (Prague to Paris) so was looking at other Lines also. Most of you are listing UniWorld which sounds neat, and we went to a social event by Crystal (excuse to drink their wine!) and they looked interesting also. Any advice on Line options or suggestions on a river cruise out of Munich area. We are flexible.....I’ll use you guys as a ‘travel agent’!
