Mythbuster Posted August 16, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 16, 2018 It seems like the direction the Summit is docked in Bermuda is random. Does anyone know if the port master uses any logic in directing the captain as to which direction to dock or is it truly random or the whim of the port master? Smitty83 Posted August 16, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 16, 2018 I think it's more the whim of the Captain. They need to exercise the lifeboats, and they need to alternate sides for that.
wwcruisers Posted August 16, 2018 #3 Share Posted August 16, 2018 It's also sometimes at the whim of Mother Nature. On our second Summit to Bermuda cruise, we docked in the opposite direction, from where we had been on our first cruise. The big factor was that we were docking in a wind-storm -- that lasted the whole three days we were there! :(
volk904 Posted August 19, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 19, 2018 Captain Kate told us last year when she was on the Summitt that Captains choose which way they dock. It is based usually on weather coming in and expected when they leave, time of day etc. Example if it is windy coming in they usually don’t make the swing turn to be heading out on departure. If they expect it to be wi Day leaving they make the turn a dock heading out. Sent from my iPad using Forums
kenevenpar Posted August 20, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 20, 2018 It can also be at the request of engineering, for maintenance procedures. At the end of the day, it is the Captains choice.
Denny01 Posted August 20, 2018 #6 Share Posted August 20, 2018 Either view is interesting. And depending on how the ship is ‘facing’, the view across the bay is really nice. Den
aquashores Posted August 20, 2018 #7 Share Posted August 20, 2018 Just got off Summit yesterday. It was docked Port side this time and during my 2017 cruise.
dodger1964 Posted August 20, 2018 #8 Share Posted August 20, 2018 I thought they asked the highest level zenith on board what view from their room they wanted while in port and the captain docked accordingly?

Wine-O Posted August 20, 2018 #10 Share Posted August 20, 2018 The Staff Captain once told me if they need to do maintenance on the boat davits and put boats in the water to do the maintenance. Sounded like the most logical reason to me.
philpcruiser Posted August 20, 2018 #11 Share Posted August 20, 2018 I though they put the cleaner side of the ship facing the dock (in case anyone takes photos).

Denny01 Posted August 21, 2018 #13 Share Posted August 21, 2018 Just got off Summit yesterday. It was docked Port side this time and during my 2017 cruise. So was ours in May 2017! Hold on, that’s 3 out of.......1,218 dockings??? Oh well. It looked for for a second. Den
