Dividing Rooms

Has anyone ever bought one cabin, and was able to buy a second cabin once on-board?  We purchased a balcony cabin on NCL Breakaway for 4 of us, and am starting to question if we should have done it.  Whenever we've cruised before we've always had a connecting room with our kids.  That wasn't an option this time, so we paid more for a balcony to give us some additional room.  (We had to wait to purchase our rooms until everyone was ready to dive in, and by that time the price had doubled.)  I didn't know if once we sailed they ever let you buy an additional cabin for cheaper?  Or how does everyone manage showering for 4 people in one cabin?  We're traveling with both my husband's mom, and my mom and they are housing our 3rd child.  Just trying to figure out the logistics.  Thanks everyone for the help!!!!

First of all, the likelihood of being able to buy a second stateroom once on board is virtually nil as most ships sail full.  Have also not ever heard of purchasing a second stateroom on board once the boarding process is completed.  And if you could it would not likely be any cheaper, but would be at the last offered prevailing rate for that category.  On very rare occasion you can upgrade to a higher category for an upcharge if available, but that, too, is very unlikely.  I'm fairly certain what you have booked is what you will have.

When is your sailing date?  Are you past final payment?  If you are still before final payment your best bet would be to look at any available staterooms now to compare those options.  As long as one adult member of the original booking remains on the current reservation you can split up and add a second one. And as you know, as prices increase, they can also decrease which may make your second stateroom more affordable.

If you booked through a TA I would contact them to have them explore your options.  If you booked directly, contact NCl for the same help.

I wouldn’t count on getting another room once on board.  If you want another one contact CL/TA but keep in mind that might result in more $$$$.

As for four in a room, not a big deal if everyone cooperates a little.  No 30 minute showers for example.  Also you can stagger a little.  In other words late afternoon you are all by the pool.  One person leaves pool goes back to room to get ready for dinner.  Fifteen mins or so later the next person goes back to the room.  Etc.  Also you can use showers by pool or gym, if crammed for time.

Thanks for the fast replies!  We have already paid in full.  That's why I was concerned.  We sail in March.

Even if you are paid in full they might accommodate you if they have the room particularly if they are getting more money out of it.

Agree in that you can always book a second stateroom anytime.  The question is availability and cost, and the likelihood that the two staterooms will not be near each other - and having the cruise lines change names on the reservation if needed past final payment.  But it never hurts to ask.

Me thinks the cruise line will be amicable to the name changes after final payment  if it means they get to sell an additional room.  I very rarely have has a business say no to more money over a minor technicality.  E.g.  Last week we had 2 ticket to a show, when I first started asking about switching from Saturday night to Friday, before I could finish I got “We have an absolute policy against all refunds and exchanges “. Once I was allowed to finish and tell them that we want to switch to Friday and buy 4 additional tickets (group of 6) there was absolutely no problem with exchanging 2 and buying 4 more.

Thanks everyone!  I saw they had a room 2 doors down, so I'll give them a call 🙂  We may be able to make do with having myself, my husband, my 19 and 14 year old sons in the same room.  I'm honestly just not sure if I want to!!!  We already have a bunch of dinners scheduled close to when we have to be back on the ship from port, and I'm afraid it's going to be cutting it close on time!

If you end up with both your sons in your cabin, just send them to the gym for showers. That will make life simpler all around.

We’ve never seen the showers at the gym. Do they provide towels, body wash, etc?  That’s an option that I’ve never considered.

There are no locker rooms or showers at the gym on the Breakaway, you need to buy a spa pass to have access to them.
