Southern Caribbean in September

The seas can be rough anywhere, anytime, you are on a ship at sea. The time frame is hurricane season, an additional reason the seas can be rough, although ships will do their best to avoid hurricanes.

The weather tends to be warmer and more humid. That is part of the criteria for hurricanes.

I have done multiple cruises in September / October. It is a great price and value. We love it. The biggest risk is hurricanes. Which to date, we have not encountered yet. A big portion of those will be rerouted itineraries, and the show goes on. Rarely, your cruise may be cancelled altogether.

The southern Caribbean (Aruba, Curaçao, etc.) is not usually impacted by hurricanes, as the path of those storms generally run further north.  September is probably the warmest month - but there really is not that much variation that for south in the tropics.

Of course, very few (if any) cruises start/end in the southern Caribbean - so if you are boarding in Texas, Florida or Puerto Rico, at least part of your itinerary will be in “hurricane territory”.   That said, the odds are against a major storm influencing your itinerary - but September is usually the peak of the season, so you should be prepared for itinerary changes and (less likely) delays in sailing or debark action.

  • 1 month later...

Did Southern Caribbean 4 years ago, they are pretty safe from normal hurricane paths. Doing it again in 2 months.
As to rough seas, we didnt have any but my wife did end up getting seasick on day 6 (Cruise Day) in the SPA after getting her nails done.
Weather was great for all but 1 of the days and that was just overcast.

It is not necessarily the ports on your itinerary that might be impacted by bad weather, especially in the southern Caribbean.  By that I mean the ABC islands, not the Windward Islands to the east, down through Barbados which some cruise lines pitch as Southern Caribbean.  What may impact you is your embarkation/debark port being in the way of a storm.  We had a Western Caribbean cruise lengthened by two days due to Hurricane Dorian making us unable to return to Miami on time.  EM
