Is this connection wise?

Any credit card to suggest that would allow the Sky Club.

I suggest you access the Sky Club site on Delta and see what the current information is.  I have never used a credit card perk for Sky Club.  I was either qualified for entry by the Class of my flights or, when it was possible, purchasing a day pass.

Access to the Sky Club is either by membership in the SC, holding an Amex Platinum CHARGE card (not the DL Amex Platinum), or the DL Amex Reserve credit card.

If you have the DL Amex Platinum, you can access for a fee of $39 per visit.  Same fee for a guest.  All other DL cards get you nothing.  Further, the SC is not a part of Priority Pass of Lounge Club.

No day passes are being sold by DL anymore.

In addition, there are restrictions on club use.  You must be flying on DL, or on a partner flight that conforms to various specific rules.

One more interesting quirk.  Unless you have elite status to reduce the cost of buying a SC membership, it is actually cheaper to pay for the Amex Platinum annual fee and get SC access, than to just buy a SC membership.  And you get far more additional benefits from the Amex.

That sure seems like a lot of connections when you are flying from the east coast. We flew from Seatac, connected at LHR and then on to Rome (2018). This was through Princess EZAir.

Louisville is far from the east coast. It's barely eastern time zone. And Seattle is a very different market than Louisville...Seattle can get you to many cities in Europe and Asia nonstop. Unless you're on a UPS plane, you're not getting too far from Louisville nonstop. You could get to Dulles, which only has a UA Rome nonstop during part of the year. You could get to LaGuardia and have to trek to Newark or JFK for a Rome flight. Otherwise you're starting to backtrack west, or double-connect...or both.

We chose the double connection SDF-DTW-AMS-FCO on Delta. And yes, it is a breeze to get anywhere from Louisville as a package.
