discovery princess obstructed balcony cabin advice needed please!

Hello everyone,

I am currently booked on the discovery princess in cabin E504 which is obstructed ... I chose it because it is in an area where there is not much going on deck 7 the promenade deck (i am on deck 8 ) I was trying to find a cabin in between the lifeboats to hopefully get a less obstructed view but either they aren't available or are available in a location with main venues underneath. My question is how bad is the obstruction? We are going on an alaskan cruise and would like to be able to see the beautiful views  . Could we see if we are standing? The cabins without an obstruction are significantly more expensive. Not sure if it is worth paying hundreds more. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Should be similar to this one from Royal Princess:

For Alaska we like to sail Island or Coral in an ocean view because we spend 90% of our time in the enclosed pool area.

Hi Lee,

Thanks so much for your quick reply and the picture showing what we should expect our balcony to look like. That was very helpful! We will keep this balcony then.. We can still see standing up and we can use the saved money for an excursion! Thanks again!!!

I had E420 on Majestic and was shocked it was listed obstructed….only if you looked down. I think those cabins are good value.

I completely agree but let’s keep it a secret. ☺️

Last Fall on Majestic (E411) & recently on Discovery (E409) had DW cabins which were great…larger balcony & only obstruction was looking down.

Thanks everyone for your input and pictures. I thought we were ok with the obstruction but after seeing the pics from astroflyer and koreakruiser we are second guessing this...

CU64, why do you recommend the fours? Are the lifeboats not as obstructive? We see that there is a category BF, which is also obstructed but seems to be a step up from what we are in right now, which is BW... any thoughts on the difference between these two obstructed categories? Thanks again everyone for your guidance.

Go for fwd. obst. deluxe balcony, Marina/Lido decks cabins 101-104. Forward looking balcony with sweeping views obstructed only by a metal "fence/railing" as opposed to the see-thru blue plexiglass.

These are excellent cabins for Alaska, usually smooth sailing although it may be a tad windy at times and yes you can access the balcony anytime you are underway. I had M102 on the Majestic in August to Alaska. I would book one of these cabins in a heart beat.

we were in E504, E502 and E322 on Regal:

the top of the boat is even with the bottom of your balcony floor:

we love these cabins.

it only looks like this when you board at departure port - then the boats slide down, like I illustrated above:

Thank you all for the additional information and pictures. I think we will keep our cabin as it seems that after departure port the obstruction is not significant enough to warrant a substantial price increase. Thanks so much again everyone for taking the time to help me!!

@dimiegirl:
Very easy -- the following 16 "BW" balcony cabins (circled in blue) are all the same price as your cabin and are COMPLETELY UNOBSTRUCTED looking straight out.  (You'll see part of the awning from the restaurant below but it is completely below your floor.)

See if any of these cabins are available now; if not I would keep looking every day because cancellations or moves happen more often than not.

  • BONUS if you can score either E424/E425 (2 largest BW balconies in this section), or E428/E429 (2nd largest):

    Unobstructed BW Port:  E414-E416-E420-E424-E428-E432-E436-E438*
    Unobstructed BW Starboard:  E415-E417-E421-E425-E429-E433-E437-E439*

*E438/E439 are completely unobstructed looking straight out but aft view looks towards tenders.

We just got off Discovery Princess last week and enjoyed E410, which is the DW (with sofa) version of E424; same size balcony:

The Discovery would be the same as the Majestic, wouldn’t it?
