Well, I don't agree that the ticket price is "next to nothing".

And I personally dislike being near the elevator.  I'd rather be at the far front or far back for a quieter experience.

When discussing guarantee cabins, it isn’t the ticket price that is “next to nothing “— rather it is the difference between the fare for a guarantee and the fare for the least expensive selected cabin that is “next to nothing”.

Ah, that makes sense.

Our first ever cruise (brand new Independence of the Seas) we booked an inside guarantee cabin. Our thinking was " if we end up absolutely  hating cruising,  then we've spent the lowest  possible fare trying it out, and we're not regretting a huge layout".

As it was we loved cruising. An inside is fine if you just sleep,  bathe and change your attire. If you like to sit quietly,  read etc, then maybe not  an inside.

Inside cabins are very dark at night. It easy get up in the night and stub your toe en route to the bathroom.

Conversely,  the best sleep I've ever had onboard a cruise ship is in an inside.

Not necessarily.  We're  booked in a guarantee cabin sailing on 11 September,  and we already have the cabin number!

Yes, this is the normal situation.  The cruise line would not want a tumult of people embarking with no idea where their cases will end up.

Consider too, that people must print their luggage tags -- or at least know their cabin numbers before entering the terminal.  Royal doesn't want a bunch of un-deliverable luggage.

On a cruise in September we were bumped from an OV to a balcony without charge ,  We have a TA cruise in October with a guaranteed Inside cabin and I'm hoping the same thing happens again. Who knows

Technically in very rare circumstances a very small number of people board without knowing their cabin number until check in but their bags have been taken in by porters.  In this situation the unnumbered bags are put in a predetermined place for all bags not having a cabin number on the tags. You ned to retrieve your bags by visiting reception.

My son and daughter-in-law booked a GTY inside for our Mariner cruise next month.  Their sea pass says deck 10 but they do not have a specific cabin number yet.  By the way, this is is not the time of the Titanic.  A lower deck does not mean lower class...we prefer the lower decks as we are prone to motion sickness plus the cabins are darker and typically a bit cooler.  You also have easier access getting off the ship for ports and close to the MDR and they are usually quieter and it is easy to get an elevator when you decide to use one (those nights with 4 inch heels!!).

That's odd.  I've never seen RCI come back on a GTY with a deck number but no room.  You might want to take another look at that.

People who book cruises are either experienced cruisers or newcomers.  The experienced cruisers will pick favoured cabins based on past experience and the tendency will be to leave a significant number of vacant cabins which are less desirable.  Newcomers have no past experience and might not have a clue about what to look for and therefore go down the "Guarantee" route but will probably end up with being allocated a less favourable cabin.  If newcomers choose their own cabin they probably have no idea the significance of deck height, forward/midships/aft, proximity to infrastructure etc. etc. In short their best bet is to find a good cruise specialist or come on this site and go through all the variables and what it means in relation to their cruise if in that cabin.  Guarantee system allows you to save minimal amounts but as a newcomer you don't realise how good or bad the cruise has become from a dodgy cabin on your first cruise so it can end up loving a second rate experience thinking it's the cat's pyjamas.

Or worse with a dodgy cabin they could end up hating the experience and give up cruising as a result. Our first cruise was in a guaranteed inside and fortunately for us it was only a two night cruise to nowhere. We didn't necessarily hate the cabin itself, but we didn't love it. There was a lot on that cruise actually that was "off" for one reason or another and we were told throughout the cruise that cruising is normally better than this. We saw enough potential to think "if this is cruising at it's worst we can't wait to see it at it's best". And of course once it did get better on subsequent cruises we ended up loving it.

In thinking about this subject, I realize we've been in lots of different cabins, some in extreme ends of the ship, over or under public spaces, some very small, weird bed configurations, etc., but it never bothered us.  I'm really not sure why this is a significant concern.

In essence you are not choosy whereas a lot of people like thing their way. You are ideal punters for a guarantee.

Cruising for the first time and chose an inside guarenteed cabin. Can anyone comment on doing this category and where your room was assigned. Really don’t want deck 2, is this more then likely where I will be assigned?

Hiya, We have done 30+ cruises on 17 different ships.  Maybe we have been lucky as only once have we had a bad cabin. We have booked last minute and let the cruise line choose our Cabin, without any problems.

You say Deck 2 is not what you want. It has some plusses as people have said in the previous posts. If either of you are feeling seasick, it is far better to be low down on the ship. We were told the saying...'more you pay, the more you sway'!!.

Another warning. If you do choose your Cabin, do not tick the box that says you will take an upgrade. Upgrade to you will no doubt be very different to the Cruise Line's upgrade. Yes, you might end up with a bigger balcony, but your Cabin could be below the swimming pool or gym etc..   Also once they assign your new Cabin, you cannot get your old one back, as by then that Cabin has already been assigned to someone else.

Regards Chris
