Covid positive after cruise & another cruise coming up

Recommended Posts

Just returned from the Celebrity Flora.  Got off the ship Sunday and tested positive once we returned home on Monday.  It was clear covid was running around that small ship since you heard coughing everywhere.  Passengers clearly became aware that if they went to the medical center and tested positive (we had 2 announcements that passengers had tested positive), they would then be quarantined for 10 days in Ecuador.  No matter how hard you work at preventing yourself from getting it, it only takes one fellow passenger to fly to a ship without a mask (or take a pre-tour in Quito without wearing masks) to then develop covid a few days after embarkation and it then spreads like wildfire while on a tender or on a balcony upwind of you.

What I would do differently is not cruise until all testing is stopped.  It's not worth the quarantine risk at the ship's pier nor early into the cruise.

I hate how its the luck of the draw for some people and I have been on the wrong side of the draw twice. Once before vaccination and then last month. Been on 10 cruises since restart. First nine were heavily ruled by mask wearing. Last one, rules relaxed and I relaxed and i caught covid. Went on another the next month and went back to wearing  mask in populated areas and especially in the casino since I spend a lot of time there. Came home and was negative. Go figure. Have another cruise next week and don't know how I am going to act. Vaccinated and double boosted it just happens. I will say the covid I had before vaccination was serious and terrible. Second time after vaccination was sore throat and just tired. Lasted 3-4 days.

I also wore it every time I stepped on the elevator,  in the Windjammer, when entering and leaving the shows and anytime I could see I was about to be in a close crowd.

How about during the show, did it feel like a mask was necessary then as well?

I have flown 12 times in the last 9 months, been to two mass potential super spreader concerts (one indoor with 20,000 and one outdoor with 60,000), and been in close contact with a number of people who later tested positive.  None of those things gave me covid.  My partner caught it at the supermarket (whilst masked)and gave it to me!  So I'm not sure taking extra precautions makes that much difference.

I was also on the July 17 Mariner.  Disembarked July 25, had a slight fever the night of the 27th, cleared morning of 28th, then came back the night of the 28th.  Tested positive the morning of the 29th.

Five others travelled with me.  So far, I'm the only one testing positive.  DD has some symptoms (congestion), but tested negative.

Never wore mask or gloves on the ship.  I attended more shows than others, but we didn't do any special avoidance.

I felt "bad" (and that only slightly) on the 29th & 30th.  Much better on the 31st & 1st, returned to work on the 2nd (took DS to college on 8/1).

I would not change anything that I did.

Hello!

I am glad to hear you are fine now.  Are you considering an antibodies test before your October cruise?

I don't think so re the antibodies test.
I am reading up on peoples' thoughts here and then will decide. Hope the more fortified second booster comes out by then.

Hope you recover fast. Lots of rest and fluids.

I went on HM in April and got COVID while onboard.  Initially I thought it was allergies acting up since I had been away from our pets for a week and a half.  But a day or two later I woke up with a very slight sinus headache.  I decided to take some sinus medication and while I laid in bed waiting for it to kick in, I read posts on our sailing's FB group.  People were posting left and right about testing positive.

I would not do anything differently.  The vax/boost did it's job. The worst part of the illness was the quarantine.  I luckily had no symptoms aside from the initial sinus headache save for a slight cough for a 2 or 3 days.

We are already planning our next cruise.

I was trying to research how long the antibodies will be in a persons system with this strain. Couldn’t find anything.

I am going. But was wondering if anybody did anything different.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID tracker, BA. 5 is the predominant strain of COVID-19. It is more easily spread than other strains because it evades immunity from past COVID-19 infection and vaccination. That means even if you were infected with delta or omicron BA.Jul 12, 2022

COVID is now endemic - it's going to continue to be with us forever more. You will catch it. As it mutates you will catch it again. And again.

The good news is that as viruses mutate they tend towards being more contageous, but less deadly. In time COVID will be just like the other coronaviruses we've lived with all our lives that cause the common cold. We're already observing how it's changing and following this usual path for new diseases.

So for me I'm going to live my life and not let COVID rule it for me. If I catch it then that's annoying and unpleasant, but so is catching flu. Life's too short to worry about it anymore - my opinion of course, but with testing requirements mostly gone for everything other than cruising it seems the world is already mostly of this opinion.

My wife, daughter and I were on Quantum of the seas for an Alaska cruise July 4th. We all had separate rooms. My daughter tested positive the second day back. We all have had our 4 shots. The only thing she did different was go to the gym each day. We try to be as careful as we can but I believe with the new variant it will be almost impossible not to get it. I don’t believe it’s if we get it, but when we get it.  We have six cruises planned for the rest of the year. It’s a risk you will have to take considering the fact that the ships are at full capacity. There are no requirements to wear masks or limit the people in the elevators.  The buffet is self-serve and I see people eating food in the buffet line. I don’t recommend the buffet.
