There seems to be so much talk about all the upcharges now in the dining venues so was wondering how it is handled. Specialty dining receive a mariner discountvsobthought I would ask if anyone has knowledge of it being applied.

I doubt it.  I do not recall one on the Pinnacle lobster addition earlier this year.  Besides, they charge you the full service charge on 50% off discounts such as wine package.

Dave, am I understanding correctly...a $200 wine package discounted at 50%  has a service charge on the $200

In the volatile world of tipping etiquette (please don't throw rocks), it's not uncommon to tip based on the full price when you get complementaries or discounts. Like a comped dinner at a casino or happy hour discounts on appetizers at a bar. Some do, some don't. No choice on the HAL packages.

That's my experience with my wine package.....I was charged for the wine package + 18% - 25% (3 stars).

There was a time that you received a discount on the upcharge amount.  No need to make remarks about it.  The last time I was on the koningsdam they said they don’t do that anymore.  People have reported that they have gotten it unless they are confused about what discount they have gotten.  I emailed the Mariners society and never got an answer.  I called on another item so I asked.  They said it’s not a thing but I know for sure I’ve gotten it in the past.  It was never on the mdr items.  Just the specialty restaurants.

Thanks everyone for your insight. So i understand the charge now in pinnacle for instance...My order would have an additional $7 charge. A little surprised but as long as I know.

Jumbo shrimp cocktail

Heart of romaine Caesar salad

Filet Mignon

Creme Brulee

Cheers everyone

On m.s. Rotterdam VII they didnot calculate like before this Autumn. I specifically asked why the refund on my statement (bought winepackage before the cruise) was exactly half the price including the 18%. Guest service confirmed this is the way they do it now. (Other cruises this year we had the HIA package and I simply did not check our statement whenever we had extra's.....).

As confirmed on a previous cruise by the Pinnacle manager. The Mariners' discount is for the specialty dinner regular cost (charge), not applicable to any upcharge, extra charge or surcharge.

Mariner 4 star benefit refers to a 50% discount on speciality dining “surcharges” (not Morimoto; 25% on Rudi’s). Has anyone had recent experience with getting or not getting the discount on items marked with  “$ supplement” on Pinnacle menu? Such as Delmonico steak or Beecher’s lobster Mac and Cheese?

April on the Rotterdam - discount on the meal base price only. It's been that way as long as I can remember.

Interesting. Two guest services staff told me it should be discounted, after reviewing the Mariner benefit sheet and footnotes. We’ll see what Pinnacle Mgr says. I believe you are correct as far as the actual practice despite the benefit terms and conditions, but I will report back what my outcome is.

You're correct. The wording on the website is pretty open ended. As written, it looks like it refers to any surcharges. (And ironically, not the meal cost.)

Exactly! I will push them and then follow up with Mariner Society and ask them to correct the benefits description in any case.

Same thing for us. 4 stars (200 day credits) get 25% off Rudi's Sel de mer, we get exactly the same 25% with close to 4,100 day credits. And no discount on any surcharges or any pop up restaurant, including Morimoto, even as a President club member.  Basic meal price only is discounted.

Guest Services holding firm after consultation with Mariner Society. Tried to say that since my dinner was what I had with HIA (which I PAID for outside booking) the footnote term excluding “already discounted dining packages” also made the discount not eligible. When I pointed out I HAD already paid for the dinner, simply in advance, they realized their mistake and went back to “only the surcharge for the basic meal” was covered. That’s not what the language says and I believe any misunderstanding is theirs, not mine.

The problem is that the basic meal is a surcharge in and of itself. You pay $x for your specialty dining meal, which is a surcharge to your cruise fare. All the up-charge items on the PG menu are labeled with the word Supplement, not surcharge. If the menus said surcharge and not supplement you might have a leg to stand on. (I'd also order a lot more caviar, but alas it too is a supplement and not discounted.)

While supplement and surcharge are synonyms, they're not the same.

Yes, but still beats the a la carte cost of a glass of wine with dinner.

That is to say if you do not have HIA, of course.

A very lawyerly analysis.

(No offense intended.)
