Lowering minimum voting age to 16

Recommended Posts

Following a Supreme Court decision, NZ Cabinet will draft legislation to lower the voting age to 16.

I wonder if this will have flow on ramifications in the future?

(Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Malta and Scotland already allow voting at 16.)

I was thinking the age they can share a cabin with a younger sibling in lieu of one parent in each.

Drinking?

Don’t think it could happen in OZ as voting is compulsory and how could you fine a 16 year old for not voting !

They fine for all sorts of other things, so can’t see the issue.

And should change the laws to stop over a certain age having to vote while there at it.

Compulsory voting is madness for all ages, many just have names crossed off to avoid a fine others write obscenities on the voting papers, high time to revamp it.

Cheers Carole

16 yo drinking would only happen while in NZ waters or in NZ ports, rest of the time it would be local rules (Nothing in Qatar) or ship rules while on the high seas.

Or cruise on a line that doesnt impress 16-17 year olds.

Local rules apply.

16 year old NZs are permitted alcohol under supervision of parents or adults. Can any Kiwis confirm this?

Not a good thing on a cruise, too many dangers for kids with immature brains.

There's no legal drinking age. There's a minimum legal age to purchase alcohol of 18 (and to enter most licensed premises). The voting age isn't going to change.. nor is there any intent to change the legal age to purchase alcohol or enter licensed premises. You've nothing to worry about.
