Kids in the Solarium

Recommended Posts

Well I am worried now - I have never been on a cruise before and talked hubby out of an adults only cruise on P&O (his choice) by telling him that RCI looked much nicer and has got an adults only pool for some peace and quiet.

Having read through some of the threads, it appears that RCI do not enforce the adults only in the solarium, kids playing in the elevators or chair hoggers round the pool all of which are as set out in the RCI rules.

I don't think you need to worry that much about it. On the cruises I've done, it seems that most people DO observe the rules about solarium usage. There will be the occasional ones who don't. Sometimes the staff take care of that right away, other times it takes a request from one of the adults to get them to handle the situation, but it's usually pretty calm and quiet in there. If you're one of those who lets it make their blood boil if they see someone even try to enter the solarium with a child, then you should definitely order another foo-foo drink and calm down. ;)

Yes, because though she might be quietly reading and minding her own business, it only takes a moment for a teenaged boy (or three) to notice her in there . . . and either come in to speak to her (or try to prove that he's the best of the three, which is usually a loud, rowdy thing) or to behave loudly to try to get her attention. The girl almost certainly won't be able to tell them that they don't belong there -- because she's there. Then more kids come in, and then there's a big problem.

One quiet reading teen can quickly become a whole pack of not-so-quiet, cannon-balling teens.

Good Lord............... Are you re-living your chldhood?

On Vision two weeks ago, there was one adult, a guy with a mohair-finished back, and 9 kids, (est. ages 4-11?) in tow. Don't know if they were all his, but he was the "supervising adult". Well, it was chaos in the quiet solarium. Jumping, running, splashing and screaming; and all we wanted to do was get in a few laps in peace. I waited until another woman started doing the ''glare", and then approached the pool attendant, who just shook his head and walked away! Next was to just tell the kids to knock it off, cause old MO wasn't doing the supervisory bit too well. DH and I, along with this other pax just sort of blocked off one end of the pool and took over. It worked, sort of. One kid tried to push past us and I told him (politely) for him to return to the shallow end and leave the deeper end to the adults. Mohair didn't say squat, to us or his kids! Oblivious!! The noise continued, so we finally decided to try the hot tub. Soaked for about 5 minutes and sure enough....here they come. DH just stood up at the steps to the tub, put his hand up and said, "NO!" (as you would to a naughty puppy!):D The kids ran into each other backing off so fast it was hysterical, except that we were fed up. A few minutes later, MO gets the kids together and takes them to a table for burgers....and we soaked peacefully for another 15 minutes. After the food fest, back they came, MO watching peacefully, leaning on the SAME "NO KIDS"sign, as if it REALLY said, "KIDS WELCOME...ADULTS MUST BE SUPERVISED"!

We gave up and left, disgusted not with the kids, but with that Dad, Old MO, who obviously couldn't have cared less if there were rules....clearly he and his brood were above and beyond all that. That's probably the one thing that would keep me from cruising again....I paid for my adult space, why oh why can't I have just that one thing and not have to fight to get it, or apologize for wanting it?? "I'm just saying..."

Next time report the situation to the guest relations/pursers desk. It's the pool attendant's job to enforce the rules in the solarium and if he's not doing it then it needs to be reported to the higher ups.

Sorry but kids are not allowed in the solarium (on warm weather itineraries). That's why it is 16 and older. It doesn't say 16 and older unless you are 2 and your mom brings you in.

Spot on, cruisinmama. Sailed Freedom 2 weeks ago. Went to the Solarium twice during the day and each time a family with young children showed up (not the same family each time). In each case the attendant informed them right away that the area was adult only. So...

1. No kids even when they are with their parents

2. Staff did their duty and kindly explained the rules

Amen Kewl! Some folks just seem to prefer to complain!

It is good to see the pool crew do their job but when I see how passengers sometimes abuse them, I can understand why some of them are reluctant to call rules violators to task. I think that more frequent visits to the area by security personnel or ship's officers might encourage more observance of the rules by passengers and might give the pool crew more incentive to enforce those rules.

I agree with a previous poster who said the solarium should only be accessible with an adults sea pass card. Another positive step would be to get the pizza and hamburgers out of the solarium on Vision Class ships. Pizza and hamburgers are certainly an attraction to children to come into an adult area. What was Royal thinking when they decided to do that?

Agree with Tony on this one. Also a bonehead move by RCI to have the burgers and such in the Solarium.

I for one think Disney does the adult only area much better, I sail them four times a year and they always keep anyone UNDER 18 OUT, RCCl should change the 16 to 18 since 16 is not adult. I just got off of the Mariner and there were rude wild high school kids who took over every space on the ship and caused nothing but problems for everyone else. When I read ANOTHER person had fallen over board, all I could think of were the many crowds of kids on Mariner at night around 1AM just running around with NO SECURITY at all. If Mariner doesnt change the policy with more security, then you will have more and more wild out of control kids falling overboard.

OK THIS IS SO NOT FAIR!!! Ok, I am a 12 yr old and the reason kids love the solarium is because it is inside and their is good food and it is decorated and queit and awsome! The parents would love us to be able to swim in the solarium because we dont get sunburned! It makes us feel better too. SUNBURN IS BAD!!!!!And we are NOT brats! We just love to have fun! I dont really think that babies should be able to go into the solarium because crying is bad and poop in the pool. But it is not fair that we kids have so suffer just because grown-ups dont want a little noise. Their are other places to hang out just for grown-ups like the disco and meet and mingles and shows and more! I'm just sayin.......

PS: The only place that us kids have to ourselves is the kids program! You guys have tons of places just for grownups!

Sorry kid, you just don't understand, us adults need peace and quiet in the day and generally that means no kids (some adults also needs to be included). But we need an area like this where there are no bombys, no mum look at me, just somewhere quiet to enjoy reading a book. To be honest if all the kids in there were really quiet reading a book also, it wouldn't bother me, my experience however, is much different to this and it is rare to have extremely well behaved kids around a pool - pools are just too much fun to be quiet about!

You're seriously saying that you "suffer" on a cruise because the adults have one pool that is just for them? Please. The "only" place you have is the kids program? Let's see, there are facilities and activities for all ages, teen discos, open rooms just for the teens to hang out. But you expect us to feel sorry for you? Not going to happen. Adults have the Solarium (the only pool just for adults), the casino, the adult disco (after a certain time), and the spa. That hardly qualifies as "tons" of adults-only places. The truth is that it's attitudes such as yours that makes me glad we do have a few adults-only places. Your sense of entitlement is pretty normal for your age, so I'll just say this: That's the way it goes and the world is not always going to be what you perceive as "fair." If you don't like it, you can always suggest that your parents leave you at home and no longer foot the bill for your "suffering" on cruises.

i think grumpy old women like you should go on an adult only ship! Not all parents are like you say and not all kids are either.Do you know that children pay oh yes they have to pay nearly as much as an adult for their cruise.Last time we cruised it wasn't nice enough weather to use the outdoor pool so it would have been nice to be able to use the covered pool.

Looks like another 12 year old listening to their parents when people gripe about kids. "go on a cruise for old people", "let the kids have fun". I think people should leave their spoiled brats at home and let them really suffer for the summer, make them get a job.

I thought that I had read somewhere that on cruises where weather was not good, there were times for families to use the covered pool. I have some teenagers in my party  . They had better behave themselves (and I will be watching), but I would like them to be able to have a swim at least once a day.

I remember being a "kid" for a lot of years and now I've been a "grownup" for a lot longer. If an area of the ship is designated for a specific group everyone should respect that. Children have the right to expect their space to be for them and adults have the same rights. It's just to bad that children want to grow up so fast. They're too young to recognize that this life is a one way street. If they take the time to be children now maybe they won't need to act like children when they're adults. Oh well, enough of that sermon-I've got a ship to catch! Hopefully, their will be no kids in the Solarium when I get there!!:D

I still like the post I read a long time ago that said they liked children as long as they were served with a nice mushroom gravy. :D

If they changed the rules - and required all children 16 and under to stay in the Solarium - you wouldn't see a single one. :p

Just testing the boundaries

for the whiney kid who is suffering outside the adult solarium: get over it... when you're an adult you will understand... and when you are footing the bill and working for the money to foot the bill, you will understand the importance of child-free places...

in the meantime, stay out of the adult solarium, be respectful and be grateful that your parents can afford to take you on a vacation at all, your attitude indicates that you don't deserve such luxuries....

I of course, have 2 children that are always behaving like little gentlemen:eek: Ha! But I agree wholeheartedly! The Solarium is for adults only. As a matter of fact, I was annoyed that they open it up to those "16 years old and up". The teens can be more obnoxious than the little ones!

I'm with you......Solarium=adults!

Hate to tell you but the Solarium is for 16 and up, according to the RCCL website. It is not all adult as most think. It is ALWAYS 16 and up, but at other times may be opened up to others under certain conditions.

Quoted from the guest conduct policy

Solarium * Age 16 and over*

* During inclement weather and select hours, the ship may permit the Solarium Pool (if covered) to be

used by persons under age 16 provided they are directly supervised by a parent or guardian.

Hell, I even have child-free places in my home! Is that mean or what? :)
