FitzLA Posted November 19, 2007 #1 Share Posted November 19, 2007 It is a Japanese based company, and is to be built at Aker Yards to debut ???. It is the most unusual concept I have ever seen, and at 450,000 tons will make Genesis look small. But while it travels the world with passengers, it will be open to the public in each port of call with use of all its features and amenities, including the hotel (since it will spend multiple days in each port) and can be used for even sporting events. It´s not even in the order books of Aker Yards yet:rolleyes:
FitzLA Posted November 19, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted November 19, 2007 According to the calendar it would be 2010. But you are probably right and that is probably an example. And yes, I think they are still in the financing stages of this ship. So we are probably some ways off yet. But it is a great concept. I hope it happens. Rare TPKeller Posted November 19, 2007 #11 Share Posted November 19, 2007 Very interesting, the drawing looks like it has a Viking Crown Lounge on the top. I wonder if RCCL would have anything to say about that! Also sounds like their "shopping mall" may indeed be a copy of the Royal Promenade. I can't imagine RCCL is OK with these brand features being copied. Theron

There are already other ships sailing that have these features. ColorLine, a Norwegian ferry-line has two ships, the Color Fantasy and the Color Magic. Both ships are built at Aker Yards in Finland, shipbuilder of Voyager class, Freedom class and Genesis class. Both ColorLine ships have the promenade and a lounge on top just like the Viking Crown. I was on a presentation of ColorLine a week ago and they even mentioned how they have been inspired by the RCCL ships with their ships design. Thanks for the info! Theron You are welcome, of course they name those places a bit different;) . BTW I have sailed the Color Fantasy earlier this year and was amazed about the product delivered especially having in mind this ship is going back and forth between Kiel and Oslo 365 days a year on a regular ferry schedule. It was more like a mini-cruise experience. If you are interested in pics click on the link to my website in my signature.
golfer1966 Posted November 19, 2007 #15 Share Posted November 19, 2007 With 8400 passengers, Id hate to be in a port when this thing pulls in. The port would be flooded with tourists. Ive heard stories about the Freedom class having too many people on it and people not being able to sit in the Windjammer....etc I dont know for sure cuz I havent been on it, but Voyager class is good enough for me for now. bubbie617 Posted November 19, 2007 #18 Share Posted November 19, 2007 Interestingly, it sounds like they plan to have ship's facilities open while the ship is docked. I have never been on a ship that was allowed to keep the shops and casino open when the ship was not actually at sea. I wonder how they plan to pull that off.

That is quite different from the Royal Promenade. Interestingly, it sounds like they plan to have ship's facilities open while the ship is docked. I have never been on a ship that was allowed to keep the shops and casino open when the ship was not actually at sea. It will only be duty free while at sea.

It's just like NCL putting a rock wall on their latest ship, or Carnival putting a movie screen on theirs (copying princess). Ship designs evolve, nobody can be 100% original. arcanium Posted November 19, 2007 #24 Share Posted November 19, 2007 The fuel costs would be astronomical. Unless it becomes the first nuclear-powered cruise liner, I don't expect she'll be constructed any time soon. Also, I would love to see this "international patent" they write about, for opening up the cruise ship as a shopping mall for the locals.
