Souvenir ideas?

I always buy decks of playing cards from the places I visit.

Did you know you can get a complimentary deck of 'Carnival' logo playing cards? I've gotten them from the purser's desk and also the casino. Just a thought to add to your collection.:)

I'm not really into buying a bunch of souvenirs from the ports either, but I do like to buy a coffee mug with the name of the port on it so that every time I use it at home I fondly remember being there. Same with refrigerator magnets, always buy one or two of those in every port too. And maybe a tote bag if I find one I really like. Always a Christmas ornament too. And someone mentioned the painted feathers, I got one too in Cozumel. Love it. But mostly I just take lots and lots of pictures. :)

I collect shot glasses. When we were in Nassau we bought a picture album made out of leaves that we gave to my fiance's mother. She loved it!

Now there is a practical gift, it gets used over and over!!! LOL I get the shot glasses too.

But also try to get a unique piece of art or craftwork from every place we visit.

I have paintings that I stretched and mounted on my bedroom wall from Panama indian tribe, also a unique painting of a eye with a tear coming down on a roofing tile, very cool.

I also have a beautiful hand tied shawl from Columbia, just beautiful and I try to wear it to formal night on every cruise to remind me of the beautiful country.

These are the things I get, doesn't have to be big, but something I can incorporate into my decor to remind us of our wonderful times.

We're not much on souvenirs, but my husband is a very good photographer and some of his pictures are excellent reminders. When we were in St. Petersburg, vendors were always pushing the nesting dolls (matryoshka). I didn't want any, but he took a shot of tons of them massed together, and the shapes and colors make a very effective picture.

My best soviner was husband. I was a passanger on the Majesty of the Seas in 97 and I fell in love with my waiter. In 2001 we were married. But besides him. We have gotten some neat things. In jamaica we got a neat fish in Jamaica that was hand grafted we also got a small sting ray the next year. And in Cozumel we got those morocos things. We collect christmas items too. I also try to get earings too. Have turtles, and sting ray from Grand Cayman, bear claws and whale tales from Alaska. Plus I also have the charm bracelet. And from both Disney and Carnival I have penants for my necklace. The one from Disney is the disney cruise line logo on one side of a mickey head. The one from Carnival is a cruise ship with Cz diamonds in it.

My mother in law loves those little spoons you see every where so we got one of those from each location we visited last year and I plan on doing the same this year. The Father in Law gets shot glasses.

My DW likes anything with shels on them so she gets picture frames etc that have that and I like hats and key chains.

I really LOVE the playing card idea, I am going to start this time around.

I collect (mind you I use them once home and give them out) coffee from the different islands - man there were some awesome ones. The one down side is that I have to keep cruising so I can replenish. Hey what am I thinking - I need more coffee, I smell another cruise coming up. I also collect Christmas ornaments, they are usually on clearance when I go - end of January early February. I am craving coffee all of a sudden, gotta go.

I get a christmas ornament from each ship I have been on, a magnet from each port for my mom and a golf ball for my brother. I also try to get a charm and then some local. When ever I am in Mexico I buy vanilla, it is the best!:D

My wife likes to collect a Cross from each area we visit. She hangs them on a wall in our living room and it makes an attractive arrangement. Something different to be sure plus often you can find some very unusual pieces.

The sand thread prompted me to start this one.

On my last cruise, we went to Cabo and Ensenada, and I came home with practically nothing for souvenirs.

I'm one of those that hates to pick up a cheesy made-in-China (unless I was visiting China, which I never have) "fake" souvenir. I want something that truly reflects the place I'm visiting.

So, with that said, what do YOU like to bring home for a souvenir?

I like to pick up food items where possible. Hot sauces all over the Caribbean, vanilla from Mexico, local honey, coffee, etc. Make sure you pack liquids in checked luggage though! :)

Being Coast Guard (now retired) and growing up son of a Naval Officer, I have salt water in my veis, and always had a nautical affection.

At each of my stations and variuos port calls I have looked for a boat or ship with the local flare. ometimes they do have the name of the port or island on them, if not I paint it on.

In St Maarten I go a ship shaped like a dutch wooden clog with the Dutch flag on the sails. At some of the other Carribean islands they make three masted sailing ships out of bull black and red bull horns. These are very unique and georgeous. So that is my nautical souverner (sp) collection, now with a few cruise ships joining the fleet. All great conversation pieces:). Especially Alaskan fishing boat with blackened oil stained hull .

I have started collecting small flags of the various islands/countries we have visited on our cruises.

So far I have easily found them with ease in one or two gift shop stops, with the exception of Grand Cayman, last week.

I was also going to mention flags - although I get the full size ones, which are quite a bit harder to find. Many of the shops fly them, but few actually sell them, so when I can actually purchase one it makes for a great souvenir (and my bedroom somewhat resembles the UN)!

Every cruise I buy:

post cards My favorite cards are the ones that show the island or country and have town names, local interest spots, what the island or country produces, etc.

stamps On the last cruise I bought a couple of stamps in Belize then bought more from the purser's desk because they had 5 or 6 different stamps for Belize , in addition to having at least one stamp or more from the other ports of call from the cruise :cool::).

Some cruises we get or buy:

tote bags With the name of the island or a business name on them (Antigua or Margaritaville).

14 kt. charms For my good gold bracelet.

Shirts With the name of the island or a business name on them (Roatan or Margaritaville).

Local items Various things such as shells, sand, carving, wood item, book, map, etc.

My BF and I used to pick up magnets from everywhere we visited, but after they began to clutter the fridge, we switched to post cards. We always pick one that shows a local place we visited (whether cruising, taking a road trip, or just an out of the way place we drove to) and then on the back we write the date that we were there and a "blurb" telling either an interesting story or something we never want to forget. They make a nice photo album and are a good way to reminisce about all the places we've visited!

I buy one or two pictures frames from different places also. I collect spoons, shot glasses and post cards. I mix the post cards with the pictures that I take. The post cards are great if for some reason my picture doesn't come out. I also bought a very pretty lace tablecloth in Mazatlan. We leave for a cruise in 11 days and I am going to try and find another tablecloth. I hope I can get it for what I paid several years ago. I also try to buy a magnet from the different places, but, am running out places to put them. We always buy a couple of cups and a picture album on the ship. When we were on the Alaska cruise, I bought an album with different pictures Alaska in it. When it gets down to it, I buy anything that catches my eye and doesn't cost an arm and leg. I always get the charm from Diamond International with the card that the ships gives you.:)

On the Paradise, the people at the purser's desk didn't have complimentary cards. They said that I had to go to the casino and buy a pack.

We always look for a Harley Davidson store and buy a t shirt. Unfortunately, our next cruise takes us to Cozumel, Belize and Roatan so I don't think we will get a t shirt. We look for the Christmas ornaments, art and frames. I am a picture fanatic. My tables and fridge are stuffed w/ pics.
