wrp96 Posted December 26, 2008 Author #11 Share Posted December 26, 2008 I wonder if the passengers on board know about it. I am certain they know that something is wrong. When it is suspected someone went overboard, it is a pretty big deal. The ship has to stop, and in most cases go back to where they were when they think it happened to perform a search which can take several hours. If they aren't certain they went overboard, they also have to search the ship, in some cases this has required everyone to report to their muster station for a head count. Usually they will make loud announcements throughout the ship to try and locate the person. For example, on Carnival Freedom a few weeks ago, someone had a blow up toy on their balcony that blew overboard. Somebody spotted it happening and reported it to the front desk as a possible man overboard. The ship had to stop and do an immediate turn around which isn't an easy maneuver on a ship (all the stuff in the gift shops fell off the shelves, lots of stuff was broken, etc). The owner of the blow-up toy immediately reported to the bridge that it was not a person but a toy. Still, the ship had to make certain so everyone was required to go down and rescan their cards before they could head back in the direction they were originally going. Octavio.M Posted December 26, 2008 #12 Share Posted December 26, 2008 MIAMI – The U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican authorities are searching for a missing cruise ship passenger who may have gone overboard near Cancun, Mexico. Authorities say 36-year-old Jennifer Feitz's husband reported her missing from the Norwegian Pearl just before 5 a.m. EST Friday. Her hometown was not available. A Coast Guard search and rescue crew aboard a Falcon jet joined a helicopter and three crews from Mexico to scan the Gulf of Mexico. Norwegian Cruise Line says the ship left Sunday from Miami for a seven-day western Caribbean cruise. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081226/ap_on_re_us/missing_cruise_passenger

Jamrenjer Posted December 26, 2008 #20 Share Posted December 26, 2008 We were just on the Pearl-- and I had commented to my wife-- this is one ship that someone could not just "fall over board". You would have to be drunk and climb on something-- or someone would have to lift you over... how sad though-- and we will pray for the family. Administrators Rare CC Help Michell Posted December 26, 2008 Administrators #21 Share Posted December 26, 2008 Oh, how I hate these stories. :( Whether accident, alcohol, foul play, suicide... whatever.... what a sad conclusion to a much-anticipated vacation, and how disturbing for the crew and the other passengers on board.
