Woman missing on the Pearl

Water temperatures in the Gulf are relatively warm — somewhere in the mid-70s — so hypothermia would not pose a danger to her.

Feitz, who may be a Houston resident, was last seen at roughly 8 p.m. EST Thursday, though her husband reportedly did not notice her missing until 3:50 a.m. the following morning.

Why were they looking for a body near the pier? Maybe they were just conducting crew lifeboat drills?

to be perfectly honest i have no idea. i have never seen a lifeboat drill on the two cruises i had been on but any day we are in port we are off the boat doing our own thing. so they could have done one everyday for all i know. i just happened to see this happening on the day they were looking for a body.

from what i understand and what i remember, he went overboard sometime in the middle of the night and no one reported him missing until several hours into the next morning so they did look in the harbor/pier in Turkey even though more likely than not it was not where he went over. it was probably more protocol. from what i remember there were several countries involved. US obviously, then the Turkish coast guard and also Greek divers (we had been en route from Santorini i believe). i dont think they had any idea when we had actually gone overboard so they were looking everywhere.

on this new one have they deemed the woman officially "gone"??

its so sad. i feel horrible for her family. so tough at the holidays too. :(

Re: keeping tabs on each other..( poster who wanted to make sure her husband was on board and they worked out the " leave watch in the cabin " ) , here is a simpler idea. We bring bright pink post it notes and if one of us is going somewhere on the ship, we just leave a note to the other person and post it on the bathroom mirror or tv. Ex: I had a spa appt and left a note for my husband that that is where I'll be as he was walking around on the ship, going to the casino etc. Sometimes he gets up much earlier than I do so if he is eating breakfast at the buffet or Cagney;s, he'll leave a note. Works for us.

Are the cameras that watch the sides of the ship equipped with night vision or is there enough light from the rooms and outside decks that make it possible for the cameras to catch activity (such as a person falling off the ship) at night?

They are night vision ones plus the light from the side of the ship.

I noticed the reports say "may" or "could have" fallen of the ship so I guess we should not jump to conclusions. I hope they find her somewhere. I woudn't want this to happen to one of my familty members and then have all these accusations flying. My sister and her family are on the Pearl right now. When I saw the thread started, of course I got a pit in my stomach. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family no matter what happens.

You are refering to the Dawn, and actually her boyfried was cleared of any wrong doing because of those security cameras. They captured her trying to crawl to the other balcony. Her parents had him in the electric chair until that footage came out and they havent been heard from since. Her parents live in the next town over from me

Tiggerfan616, you could be correct, however she just might have been locked out on the balcony....

Is it my imagination, or are these "missing passenger" situations occuring more frequently than in the past?

It's possible, but there are also many more ships than there used to be and most of those ships are pretty large. I doubt the percentage of pax going missing is higher than in the past.

I just really hope this doesn't turn into the kind of thread that the one about the lady that fell off the Dawn turned into. Where the husband is found guilty before we know any facts at all. On that thread there were some horrible things said about the man that lady was traveling with and it turned out to be of her own doing. Even her family slayed him in the media before they knew the facts. The only thing we know for sure is the lady on the Pearl is missing and her family is in hell right now hoping against all hope that she will be returned to them.

I agree. I remember how all the members who posted things like, "Shouldn't we wait for facts before we make assumptions and basically fry the husband?" were shouted down and flamed. (I remember really well because I wrote one of the "wait and see" posts.)

Night vision Has her going overboard at 8 P.M.

Well if that is the case, then suicide is the most likely reason for her to go overboard.

At 8pm most will be eating, getting ready to see the show or going tween cabins and either restaurants or theater/bowling alley etc. The outside decks are pretty much deserted at that time in an evening, perfect for someone who is at their wits end to just give up on life.

Like I said earlier, this is a favourite time for suicides...the end of a year and the start of a new one. If someone was in the frame of mind that last year (ie 2008) was rotten for them, then chances are they will assume 2009 will be more of the same...especially if that person has a business that is hitting crisis due to financials (which afterall many firms will go bust in 2009).

Could be a multitude of reasons and a mixture of many...either way, the lady's family, friends & workmates will be equally devastated by her ending it all...many, if not all, will be asking themselves...'why didn't she come and talk to us?'

Very tragic way to end a year.

I just saw the today show report... gee, what a bad "piece" of reporting. The main point is they did see her going over at 8 pm. However, the rest of the report made it sound like it isn't that hard to fall over board..HUH? They did mention that alcohol usually plays a role.... ya think?

Another idea is to each carry a two-way radio! Recharge it overnight.
