luckycruzer Posted March 12, 2009 #5 Share Posted March 12, 2009 on Holiday..I have noticed a deff decline the past 6 months in their hype, and the position on the ship. They are no longer in the way of traffic in the walkways, and no more tabloids under my cabin doors.
michmike Posted March 12, 2009 #6 Share Posted March 12, 2009 I would imagine that 95% of us would see this as a good thing. Maybe Billy Mays could buy out the space they've been using and sell us all "Sham- Wows" and OxyClean.
Kabana Posted March 12, 2009 #7 Share Posted March 12, 2009 Yeah! no more "art" auctions clogging up the ocean bar!

Perhaps more constructive use will now be made of the large area that it once occupied!
world~citizen Posted March 12, 2009 #9 Share Posted March 12, 2009 Do you suppose it means cruise fares will have to increase?

jrzebird Posted March 12, 2009 #12 Share Posted March 12, 2009 The only thing I'll miss about the art itself being on board is that it gave me something to look at during moments when I was either waiting for DBF, or just had nothing to do. I never attended one of the auctions and wouldn't. No loss.
CowPrincess Posted March 12, 2009 #13 Share Posted March 12, 2009 Too bad, IMHO. I won't miss the "art" but I expect there will be increases in cruise fares, without the income from Park West.
hammybee Posted March 12, 2009 #14 Share Posted March 12, 2009 No surprise. Art Auctions subsidize cabin prices on almost all cruise lines. That long time poster, known to many, with more than 30 years of onboard employment, has said, many times, as soon as the Art Auctions ceased being profitable they would be replaced with something else. Two@Sea Posted March 12, 2009 #15 Share Posted March 12, 2009 The article said they were only cutting back by 10%... I think they should consider adding another zero to that!

SDHALFAN Posted March 12, 2009 #19 Share Posted March 12, 2009 on Holiday..I have noticed a deff decline the past 6 months in their hype, and the position on the ship. They are no longer in the way of traffic in the walkways, and no more tabloids under my cabin doors. Unfortunately they were alive and well onboard the Statendam this past February, clogging up the walkways around the Ocean Bar and pestering us with the flyers. However, the one time I did peek into the Ocean Bar I saw very few people sipping the "free" champagne. I, for one, will not miss them at all. English_in_Spain Posted March 12, 2009 #20 Share Posted March 12, 2009 I would rather pay a small extra cruise fare and not have the art auctions. I hate them. I have never seen the relevance to cruising. Most people seem to dislike the art auctions and do not go to them (apart from a free glass or wine or champagne). Who actually buys these pictures? m steve Posted March 12, 2009 #21 Share Posted March 12, 2009 Never attended one and never would. Better to buy local art in the ports. Maybe they can turn the enclosed space into a smokers bar and draw passengers from Celebrity, Azmara and Oceania. They could sell top shelf liquor and make a good profit. redwinger Posted March 12, 2009 #22 Share Posted March 12, 2009 Best news heard is the demise of these "art" auctions. Give us back our ship, and keep your crappy champagne.
dustymax Posted March 12, 2009 #23 Share Posted March 12, 2009 I am leaving on a cruise tomorrow and I would happily pay a surcharge right now to have them gone. The smaller the HAL ship, the harder they are to escape...
