Free cruise Captain's Club Points?

We just returned from a trip to Bermuda on the Summit. (AWESOME trip BTW) My wife and I are 1 short cruise away from Elite status. She received a FREE 14 day cruise on our last night in the casino. My question is would that cruise qualify us for the Elite status or is it just cruises that we actually pay for?

A free cruise does not count for points.

There is a way to get your points. If you pay for an upgrade you will receive points. Did this on my free cruise offered at 3000 points. Went from the free balcony to AQ and received AQ points.

That doesn't really seem fair. You didn't pay the full price for Aqua so why should you get the full points? I thought if you book, say a guarantee ocean view cabin but they put you in a veranda you only get the points for an ocean view cabin because you didn't pay for a veranda cabin.

Not my call. I normally take AQ and the free cruise at 3000 points is a balcony. I paid the difference and received the points. Once I reached Zenith, with no hope of ever reaching 6000 points, the points were completely meaningless .But, that's what Celebrity did. Blue Chip rules might be completely different since Blue Chip is awarding the cruise and not Celebrity.

You are correct if Celebrity upgrades you for free. However, if you pay even a dollar more for the upgraded category, you receive the points for the upgraded cabin. We paid to upgrade from AQ to a suite and we got suite points. HTH.

This is incorrect. free cruises through the Blue Chip club do accumulate points. Free cruises from other sources may not, but they will if you pay to upgrade.

What is the blue chip club?

When you gamble on board you can put your card into the slot machine, or give it to the croupier. You earn points as you gamble. You then have the option to use those points to gamble more. Also, they generally have a special slot pull of passengers who have gamble a certain amount by a certain day.

This is the Casino loyalty club.

She won a jackpot on the second night of $2900. She played that money for the rest of the cruise. She won some more, lost some more, etc. Eventually she lost it all by the end of the cruise but to be awarded with a free cruise was a pretty nice trade off.

  • 1 month later...

She received a FREE Veranda room for up to 14 days. We just booked the 10 day trip next May 28th out of Dublin to Iceland. Since it was not a full 14 days, they upgraded our room to Concierge Class. We do get the Captains Club points for the full 10 days in Concierge Class since the free cruise was awarded through the Blue Chip Club.

Congratulations on the free cruise!

You and your wife were on our British Isles cruise a little over a year ago. I was the coordinator for the Normandy tour. Enjoyed talking to y'all!

We have booked the May 10th Ireland/Iceland cruise. Sorry that we are not on the same cruise. ;)

Hate to pour salt on the wound, but I once booked a veranda guarantee room, was upgraded for free to Concierge class because there weren't any Verandas left when they assigned my cabin... and guess what? We received the number of points based on the Concierge and not the Veranda...

Unfortunately points are based on the room you sleep in and not what you pay - there are cruises that you can get a veranda for $100/night, and others you have to shell out $300+/night because of the timing and/or itinerary... Either way, if the cruises are the same length, you get the same amount of points. If you look at it from a purely economics standpoint, the point system isn't "fair" and there are definitely ways to cheat the system... but at the end of the day, you probably shouldn't be basing your cruises on how many points you earn and should be basing it on what will give you the best experience based on what you're looking for (unless of course you're so close to that next level... then maybe I could understand that...)

If your experience was more than about 2 years ago I hate to say but they have changed the rules. Now it's not necessarily what you pay but it's based on the category you BOOK not what you actually SAIL.

The example stated previously was correct if you book a balcony GTY (X) and are assigned AQ you only get the 3 points/night not 5. Now if you pay to upgrade from balcony to AQ at the current AQ rate then you get 5 points per night. There is another situation where Celebrity may contact you and offer you the AQ room at a reduced rate then you still only get the 3 points per night.

Celebrity is never consistent and they might mess this up sometimes but these are the rules. It seemed to change when they started the Captains Club loyalty reduced rate upgrade program.

That was the best tour we have ever done, we still talk about it a lot. Thank you again! You'll have to post about your trip and the best things to see. We can't wait to go on this one, it sounds amazing!!!

Thank you! :)

I am not sure what you did in Dublin and Cork on the BI cruise, but I can recommend what we did. All private tours! I will try and remember to post as soon as we return. We plan to spend some time in Ireland after the cruise. We will spend several days in Scotland before the cruise. Fell free to email me if you have questions while we are traveling.
