Earliest Possible Flight out of FLL after returning to POM?

Please, no lectures or scoldings. I just want to know the earliest flight departure time someone was able to make flying out of FLL after arriving back into the POM on a Sunday.

Please list the time of departure, day of departure, if you made the flight or missed it and any other information that you think is helpful to either making or missing the flight, eg, accident, weather, priority disembark, etc..

We have an option for a 10:20 flight and we'll be checking bags, so we'll have to be at the airport by 9:35. I know it's very tight, but I'm willing to take the chance if other have successfully made it. Worst case, we miss the flight, we plead for mercy and they put on standby for later flights.

I travel frequently and I'm well aware of the consequences, but I have status with the airline, so I think they'll show some sympathy.

We'll be on the Breeze ending 7/13.

Thoughts?

see my post about today

it is 8:40 and foggy in Miami

4 cruise ships have just gotten the OK to START their transit from outside the sea buoy to their berths ... which they must do at reduced speed because of the fog ... the first in line will be lucky to begin offloading in under an hour. The last in line?

It happens . . .

The earliest I've attempted is 12:05. Based on my experience (Fridays and not Sundays) if everything is running normal the 10:20 flight would be doable. Obviously you're aware than any delays could seriously impact the probability.

Good luck! :)

Arriving at 9:35 doesn't mean checking-in at 9:35. Last time we flew out of FLL, it took us 2 hours+ to check in. While I'm sure it's not always that bad, you need to give yourself probably an extra hour, meaning being at FLL by about 8:30. Now, this is doable, but it certainly not anything I would attempt.

You are also rolling the dice with the traffic. Morning traffic on I-95 is a beast. One small accident, it turns into a parking lot and you miss your flight. Plus the commute is 40 minutes best case.

Just want to make sure I understand your possible attempt.....you're flight is at 10:20 and you're saying you have to be at the airport by 9:35am, correct? That is only 40 minutes. Where are you allotting time to check your bags and get through security? No way will you have time to check your bags and get through the long security lines at FLL on a disembarkation day and make a 10:20 flight in that time frame.

I agree with the others on traffic and the problems that will arise if there is an accident.

However, we are cruisers that do not like to stress on disembarkation day and therefore, never book a flight before noon. We've been hung up numerous times getting off ships, most recently on our last cruise a few months ago. We waited 1 hr & 45 minutes to get off and out to catch a cab (and this was taking our own luggage off). We just don't like the stress and pressure of trying to not miss a flight.;)

If you try this time, let us know if you made it. You will have lots of curious cruisers wanting to know. :)

I would make sure I was in line carrying off my bags as soon as is allowed. Cross your fingers. As mentioned fog, slow customs ship clearing, traffic etc. isn't predictable. Have in hand a schedule of airlines and flights you may need if you hit a delay And have to rebook.

OK... I haven't heard anyone post that they've actually made it, so I'll push back the flight time to later in the day.

I agree that hanging out and relaxing while everyone else is scrambling to get off the ship is the better way to end the vacation.

I just know that usually, by the end of the week, for me anyway, I'm ready to head home - and back to reality.

Normally, I'm the one scrambling to get to the airport for business trips. I'll have to try to "let it go" and relax a bit.

Thanks for the replies.

OK... I haven't heard anyone post that they've actually made it, so I'll push back the flight time to later in the day. This is probably because we frequent cruisers know what can go wrong and slow us down if in a rush. We wouldn't book that flight to test our luck.;)

I agree that hanging out and relaxing while everyone else is scrambling to get off the ship is the better way to end the vacation. We enjoy this too. While everyone is racing to get off the ship we sit longer over coffee and breakfast and not get stressed.

I think you are making the best decision. You'll see others just hanging out at the pool watching the activity on the pier to avoid the rush.

On Dec 14, 2013 we had flights from FLL we shuttled from Miami to FLL with MJS along with another family. Our flight was at 11:50am theirs was 10:55am. We all got to airport with time to spare, we actually had to wait 30 minutes before Southwest would allow us to check in. The line for security was very long, but people with earlier flight time got closer to their flight security would pull these people still waiting in line and take them to the front so they could check in. The line was very long, but everyone made their flights. I saw the other family in line in front of us and they made it though without the security escort. Just keep in mind we go off the ship with ease, and left POM about 9am on the shuttle.

We don't like to push it with flights, so we usually do a 12:00 flight out of FLL when sailing out of POM. We do self-embarkation, and have usually been at FLL by 9:00 or so, with plenty of time to spare. We always say we're going to do an earlier flight, but always get scared. You never know if customs or the coast guard is going to delay the ship, or traffic.
