On the Escape. - How does it work? Total number of beers? Total number of different beers? Some kind of a weighted number based on # beers and # of varieties?

I'm not interested in participating. I just love sports.

When we were onboard it was the total number of different beers for the week. The contestants signed up one the first day in the brewhouse and then the bartenders kept track of the different beers, although my DH had a sheet that he crossed off beers during the week, just to remind him of what he already had! He did come in 3rd place with 43 different beers behind two much younger guys, so he jokes that he won the senior division!

Nice! Did he just print up a beer list before leaving home? Or write one out longhand the first day? Or does the District provide paper copies of the menu for that purpose?

We will be on the Escape in December and I'm working on how to integrate the District leaderboard into our roll call activities. We're already doing a combination pub crawl/cabin crawl, but I'd also like to do some type of multi-day activity, where we meet at the district at a certain time each day and work on our "personal best" even if we don't make the official leaderboard, LOL!

They had the paper copies there..if you have someone in the group that likes IPA's I think that's the trick to being able to drink some of the more hoppy beers. I like Belgian beers and there was a really nice selection, I wish there was a brewhouse on all the ships! Have fun!

Do you remember what the leader's score was?

Thinking of cruising the Escape. Need to prepare my liver for the competition.

DH thinks that the winner on our cruise had 63.. he was a young guy and was traveling with his family, his mom said he fell asleep one night in his dinner after being in the brewhouse for perhaps a little too long[emoji57]

Interesting! Sounds fun! I'll give it a shot in October when I go.

If you want to know the list of beers, Google the escape bars and you will find a few private sites where people took pictures of the menu.

Keep in mind it probably changes from time to time.

Yes, I believe that they only allow a certain number of people to participate, so go as soon as you get on board...

is there a set number of people who can sign up for this contest? Is it important to get here early to sign up?

That's good to know. Are they open right at boarding, or do they open later?

Also, does anyone know if the beer list remains the same, or do they switch up some stuff that's seasonal or depending on availablility?

Its been a while but thought they opened usually around 5 pm..although the venue is open to use during the day, there are nice seats and lots of windows, maybe someone else knows...

My DH participated in this during our May cruise - he won with 64 beers I believe. He actually was proud that he beat out some younger men, he is 65. He received two pilsner glasses and a growler (empty) for winning. His tropheys...

The hours were different depending on port times. He enjoys IPA's and some were really tough to drink he said.

Luckily I had some friends on the cruise with me because he spent many hours in the Brewhouse. I dined, went to shows and lost way too much money in the casino with my friends. Many nights he would return to the cabin around mid night.

He had a goal but said never again, too much for an "old Man" and he missed all the fun of the cruise, not to mention port days his butt was dragging.....

There is a live thread going on by The Dougout who can give first hand info. This is is second trip on Escape and the DBH is his "home" as he calls it.

Quite entertaining to read and follow him.

63? That only 9 beers a day. Should be pretty doable.

In Doug's live thread, he posted the current list. It's down to 73 beers if I counted right. I wonder what they use for the tie breaker, since 73 seems do-able in a week.

Do they really stock all 73 all the time? I think one trick could be to ask them what they're low on at the start of the cruise, and start with those, hoping that they'll run out by the time your competitors get around to them…

On Doug's live thread, they still had no numbers on the leaderboard as of Thursday because they hadn't tallied anyone's totals so far. Is this how it was in other weeks? It doesn't seem like it will be anywhere near as fun if you can't see how you are doing against the competition...

My DH is a beer lover but he said some of them were definitely sippers....He left the lighter beers for after he drank a few of those.

I always knew where to find him....usually on the same barstool with the same drinking buddys he met - all with the same goal.
