Mac303 Posted September 9, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2013 Received this email from Royal today: Dear Friend, In consideration of ongoing guest feedback and evolving industry standards, Royal Caribbean International is revising its onboard smoking policy, effective for all sailings departing on or after January 1, 2014. Under this new policy, all indoor public spaces will be smoke free, with the exception of the Casino and the Connoisseur Club on Freedom and Voyager Class ships and one designated smoking venue on ships sailing from Chinese homeports. In the Casino, there will be designated smoking and non-smoking areas. Additionally, smoking will not be permitted in the staterooms or on stateroom balconies. Outdoor smoking areas will be designated on the starboard side of all ships; with the exception of Oasis-class ships that will allow smoking on the port side of the ships. Indoor smoking areas permit tobacco cigarettes and electronic cigarettes. Cigars and pipe tobacco can be enjoyed in designated outdoor areas, or in the cigar club on the ships that offer this venue. Please consult our Smoking Policy FAQ for more details. Royal Caribbean International is committed to continually enhancing the guest vacation experience. To find smoking venues and areas while onboard, please consult your Cruise Compass, or visit Guest Services, where we will be happy to assist you. Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you aboard soon. Facebook Twitter Adam's Blog Pinterest YouTube Instagram

green eyed lady Posted September 9, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2013 I just got that email also. I guess they were tired of all the flak they were getting for not notifying anyone
Debitoo Posted September 9, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 9, 2013 Just got it too. It's still a little confusing regarding smoking in casinos....I had to read it twice to figure it out.
CENTEX CRUISER Posted September 9, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 9, 2013 I am just glad it is finally clear re:balconies.. Additionally, smoking will not be permitted in the staterooms or on stateroom balconies. Outdoor smoking areas will be designated on the starboard side of all ships; with the exception of Oasis-class ships that will allow smoking on the port side of the ships. setsail Posted September 9, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 9, 2013 So if someone strays out of the smoking zone in the casino, while their playing the tables, there will be someone to usher them back? Think not. There sure will. I have seen the dealers or floor manager make more than one to either put it out or move. I have even seen people light up at non smoking tables and place the cig in an ashtray on an adjacent smoking table and go back and forth. The dealers will put a stop to that also, at least from what I have seen. I see no reason why this will not continue to be handled as they have been doing it all along. JLSPOOL Posted September 9, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 9, 2013 RCL made two positive steps toward future cruise enjoyment for us. No smoking on Balcony or Stateroom and No smoking in Viking Crown Lounge. What about the Crypt? RCL needs to rethink allowing smokers to pollute the air in the Casino. RCL is on my list of favorite cruise lines. Just off the Freedom, it's a good bet we'll be on again soon. jls

I have been known to tell a smoker or two to butt out on non-smoking nights in the casino. I hope they still continue the practice of offering non- smoking nights (formal nights usually) on my next cruise?! SECdawg Posted September 9, 2013 #12 Share Posted September 9, 2013 So if someone strays out of the smoking zone in the casino, while their playing the tables, there will be someone to usher them back? Think not. On ships that I have been on that had a non-smoking section, the personnel would instruct the smoker that they had to go to the other section. I play roulette and they would not let them play at the non-smoking table.
EagleRockers Posted September 9, 2013 #13 Share Posted September 9, 2013 I am a loyal Royal Caribbean customer with over 20 cruises sailed. And I am a smoker; a very courteous smoker. One of the things I love about cruising is having a cup of coffee and a cigarette on my balcony. I've always made sure my neighboring balconies have no one on them, or I ask permission to smoke if they are occupied. 100 % of the time my neighbors have said go right ahead. With this ban on Royal Caribbean, they have lost me as a customer. I dropped Princess for the same reason. I don't think I'll be sailing with Carnival, ever. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - Sorry but I'm afraid all nights are going to be smoking nights in the casino. It's says in the policy if you read the whole thing that there will no longer be no smoking on formal nights. So they will have a smoking and non smoking section in the casino. Big deal. Ship casinos are small so might as well say the whole thing is smoking.
xxHadleyxx Posted September 9, 2013 #19 Share Posted September 9, 2013 Well, the odds of our family booking balconies just skyrocketed! I am trhilled. Who will you be cruising? (honest question, are any major US based lines left that allow smoking on balconies?)

enidcruiser Posted September 9, 2013 #21 Share Posted September 9, 2013 Just got my letter today. Glad they sent them out to clear up the story for those who thought it was not true. Balconies are now going to be clear and available to the rest of us all day long. Thanks RCCL.
lovelife Posted September 9, 2013 #22 Share Posted September 9, 2013 Glad to see that RCCL sent the message to let people know of the new policy. They didn't let me know -- not that I smoke. Of course I never get any e-mails from RCI so nothing new.

(honest question, are any major US based lines left that allow smoking on balconies?) Cruiselines that currently permit balcony smoking: HAL, Carnival (except spa cabin balconies), NCL, Thomson. Lines that will soon prohibit balcony smoking: Disney as of November 15, 2013 P & O in February 2014 Cunard in April/May 2014, depending on the ship
