The Fleet Report and Daily for Wednesday September 21st, 2022

Thank you, both, for your support. I appreciate your words of comfort in a way I didn’t know I needed. It is comforting to know you understand. I am not ready to actually talk, at the moment, and The Daily was the only place I could think where I could say what’s on my mind without speaking. Thank you, also, to those who have seen and “reacted” to my post. You do not need to say anything further. I receive what’s in your heart and I am thankful. ❤️- 84 replies

The Fleet Report and Daily for Wednesday September 21st, 2022
*Miss G* replied to richwmn's topic in Holland America Line
Good morning. It has been a crazy few months. I pop into CC a few minutes at a time, just to divert my attention from life for a while. We went to a First Nation (Mohawk) wedding in Canada this weekend. My best friend’s daughter was married in a beautiful ceremony and setting, and the day couldn’t have been anymore perfect. We “camped” with my other best friend (the three of us have been together for almost 40 years) and her husband. We had a lot of laughs around the campfire and we have dozens of mosquito bites to show for it. Oh, and I say “camped” because we stayed in a cute little tiny house and my friend was in a camper next door. Last night, right after we got home, my husband received the call that his father is at end of life. He is heading to NC, today, to be there for his mother. We had a little cry. I have a dilemma in that I am scheduled to fly to Europe next Wednesday. I am meeting my sister in the UK to begin a long planned-for holiday, and have a tight schedule between now and then, so we’ll just throw a little guilt into the mix. We stopped in to see my parents on the way to the wedding and my Dad’s not looking good. *heavy sigh* I have to trust that everything is playing out the way it should be and it is in God’s/the Creator’s hands now. We went from new beginnings and discussions of babies, to new endings and discussions of death, in a flick of the switch. Funny that.- 84 replies

There were shared tables on our cruise last week. No social distancing.
-
Yes, that’s normal. The CBSA already sees it attached to your passport electronically, so no need to ask for it. If you did VeriFLY they can see it there electronically. On our cruise last week we were asked to not only show it via VeriFLY, but to write it down on a form they left in our room and drop it at Guest Services or leave it for the room steward.

For outdoor scenery pics (Alaska, Antarctica, Arctic, etc) I always wish I had a proper camera. For indoor and city touring, I find I get nice pics with my iPhone and it isn’t awkward to carry. No. The camera works independently of any network services.

Last December, on the Nieuw Statendam, we were told they’d be mailed to us. That didn’t happen. We did get one each in our room on our Koningsdam cruise last week though.

Thank you, @Kenster! That was very helpful.

How does Verifly update now that testing not required?
*Miss G* replied to PC 462's topic in Holland America Line
Welcome to Cruise Critic! Would you mind reporting back on your embarkation and test/not test experience? Our itinerary is also not listed under enhanced protocols and I am curious as to whether it is an omission or really does fall under “simplified”. Thank you, in advance, if you do! -
I have a couple of questions that I couldn’t find the answer to on the Avalon site. 1. Are there slippers in the staterooms? 2. It states a choice of mattress. Is this requested onboard or is there somewhere to do it in advance or do you do it yourself a la sleep number?

We were in the Vancouver Airport Marriott last week, next to the Sheraton, and they were quarantining there also. 16th floor:

Not Enough of the Right Electrical Outlets in Cabins

This is the one I have. It came with a small case. I loved it so much I gave one to my son-in-law, who is a CIO. He sent me this pic from Paris in 2018. He loves it too! Unfortunately I do not see it available any longer but there are many like it on Amazon. There are multiple USB ports and it can be used in 200+ countries worldwide. The prongs related to each country’s voltage are contained within the unit and pop out when needed. -
Here is my experience with OnPoint:

Interestingly enough, there were a number of men sporting tuxes on last week’s Alaska cruise. It was dressier than I thought it would be for Alaska. To offset that, the percentage of men in t-shirts and jeans was about the same. I would say 80% of passengers dressed business casual for dinner.

Westerdam changes.. additional tip line signing for beverages
*Miss G* replied to bluesplayer's topic in Holland America Line
Strange. We didn’t have any slips to sign last week on the Koningsdam. It’s been years since I’ve signed one of those. Why would they go backwards? -
T-Mobile and the cruise lines use Cellular at Sea It would be T-Mobile which sets the costs; not the ship. Cellular at Sea just provides the means. I use Verizon. When we dock I turn off airplane mode to see if 4G/5G/LTE appears. (3G in Alaska.) If it still says Cellular at Sea, or something other than LTE/3/4/5G, then I know it’s not back to land-based service and I turn airplane mode back on until Cellular at Sea disconnects. For a quick check like that it’s highly unlikely you will incur charges unless you actually use the phone. One time we were hours at sea on the St Lawrence before I recalled I hadn’t turned my phone to airplane mode. Luckily it was overnight so no calls or texts were received, so no charges. The other day we were almost at the dock so I turned airplane mode off long enough to get this message showing the costs if I use the service. Turned it back on until we’d docked and land-based service was back.

I haven’t been on the Rotterdam but, if it’s set up like the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, there is a lovely view of the sea from inside Club Orange. Obviously, the tables closest to the windows have the best views. It’s also a great place for people watching. 😉

Oh! I thought they were weekly. Well, I’m sure oblivious. 😂 I shall pay more attention. I should be able to handle it, I think. I may have to scrunch some on the weekend of Nov 4th because we have to fly to the wedding and back. I will send you a quick email so you have my contact info. I can’t promise intelligent conversation because I’ve been driving for two days to get to Canada and have not long since arrived. Going to…. Surprise…. a wedding! Third one this year. These are all the previously covid-cancelled weddings and they’re killing me. Haha

OnPoint eMed for pre-cruise covid testing?
*Miss G* replied to mobilemac's topic in Holland America Line
The only thing that took some time was filling out the questionnaire but it sounds like you’ve done that already. Good luck!
