our flight arrives at the airport around 11:30 am and our ship departs at 5. What options do we have? This will be our first time in Europe. We considered an Uber but not sure if we will have phone service. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I guess that would help...

Rome's international airport to civitavecchia

there are several companies quoted on here

Rome cabs seem to specialise in direct transfers

other companies such as Romeinlimo will give tour of Rome before transfer

or you could do train transfer

its about 2 hours transfer from airport to Civitiveccia

but based on initial info would suggest pre booked transfer via company such as already suggested

Uber is getting bans in countries such as Spain and more recently London UK

Not sure of situation in Italy

lrcruising:

There are dozens of threads here discussing your options. Private transfers, cabs, train, bus, shared shuttles. All a possibility.

I definitely would NOT recommend arriving the day of your cruise and going direct to the port. First, you are bypassing one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Second, what happens if your flight is late? Keep in mind the port is an hour from airport, minimum, at that time of the day. Second, it can take an hour to get through Passport check and bag claim, so say you leave the airport at 12:30pm. Your ship may sail at 5pm, but you need to be onboard at 3 or 4, depending on your cruise line. A bit tight, but doable. Most importantly, considering these issues, I would definitely do a private transfer.

Plus you will be jetlagged. Not the way I would want to start my expensive vacation.

I am assuming you are arriving to FCO.

The actual drive time is about an hour.

Many private transfer companies are mentioned here. We use Rome Cabs (http://www.romecabs.com) and they are not a taxi service and many others to choose from.

I will second CruiserBruce's comments.

I think it is a big mistake arriving the day of the cruise for several reasons:

You could miss your ship if your flight is significantly delayed or cancelled.

You will begin the cruise jet lagged.

If your luggage is lost there is no time to recover it.

Can things go wrong with flights? Yes and many things. I think we have seen it all so I would never fly in the day of the cruise. We've seen things such as weather, mechanical issues, FAA/Airline/Airport computer glitches, late flight arriving to the airport for our flight, insufficient flight personnel, airport and flight security breaches and the list goes on and on.

Just book your taxi in advance cost 120 e one way. don't count on Uber in Italy + it will be more money.

We would just correct a previous poster and tell you that the driving time from FCO to the Port at Civitavvecchia is approximately 1 hour! I have actually done it in 50 minutes (with a rental car) but figure on an hour :). We have an awful lot of experience flying into Europe for cruises and would never consider a flight that is scheduled to arrive that late. Let me be really up front with the logistics. If your flight arrives exactly on time (this is often not the case) it would likely be around 12:30 until you actually had your luggage and were ready to leave the airport. Under these circumstances you would be fine. But what if your flight is a few hours late (very normal these days)? Is your ship going to be in a nearby port the following day.....and have you done your homework on the best way to catch-up to the ship? Having cruised for over forty years we would NEVER fly in the same day as a cruise out of Civitavecchia.

As a simple example we were just with friends 3 days ago, that were flying from Toronto to Copenhagen for a NCL cruise. Fortunately, they had decided to fly in to Copenhagen 2 days early. They were to leave Toronto on Tuesday night, fly to Amsterdam and then change planes. On Tuesday afternoon they were notified that their flight (that same evening) was canceled (not delayed....but canceled) due to foretasted high winds in Amsterdam. So they scrambled and were able to get a different flight (and airline) from Toronto to Paris...connecting to a flight to Copenhagen. But their flight from Toronto was delayed by nearly 2 hours and by the time they got to Paris they had missed their connections. They then had to get booked on a later flight...and finally made it to Copenhagen about 14 hours later then originally scheduled. And they were lucky that they could still find seats on their alternative flights. This kind of thing happens all too often....which is why experienced and wise cruisers always fly-in at least 1 day early (as others have posted).

Hi,

it seems that you already have a flight booked and it arrives at 11:30 am, it will take some time to clear the officials and to get your luggage so add another hour or more, so it will be close to 1 pm. Now you have to get to either a taxi or a private transfer few more minutes needed.

The ride to Civitavecchia another hour so it might be close to 2 - 2:30 when you will be by the ship. That does not leave you very much time for boarding. If the ship departs at 5 you might be required to be on ship at 4pm .

Do some shopping for the transfer - some charge more some less. Some require credit card when you are doing the booking some do not. Look at some other posts that cover the same subject.

Enjoy your cruise.

you can take a private car service, it doesn't cost much and is very accurate.

They will pick you up at the airport on your flight arrival and take you to the Civitavecchia port on your cruise departure, it's perfect :-)

Romeshuttle limousine (www.romeshuttlelimousine.com) do a private transfer for 110 Euros. We have used them twice before and booked them again for next month. They respond very quickly to emails and are highly efficient. Nice Mercedes cars with drivers who speak English.
. Very helpful. We are flying in next Wednesday. What is the best way to pay - do you have to pay in advance or pay the driver? Thanks.
