dettlja Posted February 14, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 14, 2014 On our last cruise there was a cabin up the hall from us that had an employee sitting outside the room the entire cruise. The employee had a chair and was just stationed there. I couldnt tell if the employee was trying to keep someone out, or someone in  Any ideas what might have been going on? I was too chicken to ask :p

sailor_jimc Posted February 14, 2014 #4 Share Posted February 14, 2014 Could have been a couple of things. From Noro virus to someone that did something that is getting them kicked off the ship... If someone went to the doctor and they found they had Noro, they confine them to their cabin.. if the person refuses to "self confine" they may do that.. You will never know... cruizinisthebest Posted February 14, 2014 #6 Share Posted February 14, 2014 Bad behavior, therefore confined to his or her cabin. I never heard of them camping out by the door from someone being sick. Guess it's possible.

Guess it's possible. If the guest has been quarantined and is ignoring the restriction, a guard will be placed outside their cabin until they can be escorted off the ship. I saw this happened on a NCL cruise (cabin next to ours). When the passengers were put off the ship, they were turned over to the local island health department for land quarantine (at the passengers' expense). pauleydm Posted February 14, 2014 #8 Share Posted February 14, 2014 My guess would be someone who is sick. Cruise ships have places below the cabin level to keep the naughty ones:)

ShakyBeef Posted February 14, 2014 #11 Share Posted February 14, 2014 Although there is a 'brig' on many (maybe all?) cruise ships, they will also put passengers on "house arrest" in their cabins, for some bahavioural issues. I've personally seen this done (not to me or mine!).

fireofficer5 Posted February 14, 2014 #13 Share Posted February 14, 2014 There are no passenger cruise ship jail/brig. Anytime there is a crew member stations at a passenger door, its for bad behavior. Cruise lines cannot detain people in a jail/brig. That would be like kidnaping. 75Vette Posted February 14, 2014 #14 Share Posted February 14, 2014 On one of our cruises we had a guard stationed in a chair outside of a cabin next to us. We ask him why he was sitting outside the cabin and he told us the young man had had too much to drink and got out of hand and was confined to his cabin. After 24 hours the young man was allowed to get out of his cabin. Actually, we had spoken to him and he was very nice, just a 22 year old having too much of a good time. sassy0930 Posted February 14, 2014 #20 Share Posted February 14, 2014 There is absolutely a brig. On one of our cruises (Victory in '08) we encountered a small vessel from Cuba in the ocean that was in distress. The ship turned around and picked the folks up and, from the information we were given, held in the brig until they could be transferred to the US Coast Guard. It was "exciting" to say the least. ShakyBeef Posted February 14, 2014 #22 Share Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) I've been on ccl for a fire inspection, no passenger brig. Might have been a crew brig. Maybe that's so for the ship you were on. However, many Carnival (and other cruise lines') ships do indeed have a brig that is used for passengers. Carnival staff are quite willing to disclose this fact in Q&As and many passengers have seen said brigs on Behind the Fun tours and reported their existence. There have even been several threads here on CC discussing it. Here're a few: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1161303 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1045483 http://forums.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1526496 (Sorry, I have no idea what's going on with my fonts and colour and such.) If you have an outbreak of a Norovirus that involves 300 plus people I just can't see 300 employees sitting outside of everyone's door to keep them in. I don't think they do it in every case. I believe it is when people are refusing to self quarantine. If there was an outbreak of 300, I'm willing to be that most would obey the request to stay in their cabin and not require staff to secure them.
