jaxw17 Posted December 16, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 16, 2017 Hi We are from the UK and going on a cruise on the Jewel next February. This will take in Australia, Indonesia, Komodo, Bali and singapore. Is there a currency that most of these places will accept for example Aus $ or US $ . We have Australian $ already. We are only in some of these places for one or 2 days so changing currency may be a problem and a faff. What do others do?
garycarla Posted December 16, 2017 #2 Share Posted December 16, 2017 NCL has always used US$ onboard. NCL has not cruised most of these ports, so new things to be learned. You should visit the Roll Call for your cruise to share information. Most ports around the world will take credit cards. Some countries are open to foreign currency, some are not. Folks on this forum may have limited experiences with many of these ports and can not help. Getting currency in many countries is easy via an ATM vs an exchange service that charges more. SteveH2508 Posted December 16, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 16, 2017 We did almost this exact itinerary last year on Azamara. We took Singapore dollars, US dollars and Australian dollars. Worked fine for us. We did a ship's excursions in Bali (paid for elephant photos in USD) and a private excursion in Komodo (paid in USD).
gerelmx Posted December 16, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 16, 2017 Guest relations can exchange your money to port local currency. When we do Europe cruise before the Euro, I travel with travelers checks in pounds and dollars (we start in London). They exchange me in France, Ireland, Norway, etc., also when we was doing a city tour exchange some in a local bank.
Rare Keith1010 Posted December 17, 2017 #5 Share Posted December 17, 2017 In Singapore and Australia and Bali for sure you will be best served with local currency. Many places will only take local currency in these locations. Of course consider using credit cards as much as you can. Keith
casofilia Posted December 17, 2017 #6 Share Posted December 17, 2017 The only cash generally accepted in Australia will be AUD. Similarly in Singapore only cash is likely to be SGD except that some very large places may take USD. Again in Indonesia large places may take both AUD or USD as they are used to tourists but smaller places will require IDR.

Again in Indonesia large places may take both AUD or USD as they are used to tourists but smaller places will require IDR. Having spent several months working in smaller places in Indonesia such as Tual and Ambon, US dollars were happily accepted at hotels, restaurants and bars. Australian dollars were generally shunned. I suspect you are correct that in Denpasar or Komodo due to their large tourist industry US and Aus dollars will be accepted though I do not know this from personal experience. Rare Port Power Posted December 18, 2017 #8 Share Posted December 18, 2017 In Komodo you can only get off the ship if you have a tour booked. Private tour guide will ONLY take local currency or US$, so US$ there. Australia and Singapore only use local currency, but there are currency exchange places here and there, or change at Guest Relations at a low rate. Bali readily accepts Australian $ as it is a major holiday destination for Australians. There are lots of currency exchanges but for a day port visit just use AU$ (10/1). At the port there will be cars with driver and guide available for AU$60 for the day, but they will happily accept US$60 as well!
