Do stateroom balcony dividers open on the Dawn?

We are sailing with friends on the Dawn to Bermuda. We all have balcony staterooms in a row. Is it possible to open the dividers for our three rooms so that we might go between rooms on the balcony?

You can ask, but many have reported that they will not open them.

They would not open them for us; they said it was a fire hazard.
You may want them opened.

However others, unbeknownst to you, may complain.

Therefore NCL says, "It's a fire hazard.

that is too bad. I don't know why it would be a fire hazard anymore than a lot of things, but they know more than we do I guess.

If there ever is a fire on the balcony, the dividers are designed to lessen the fire spreading to the next balcony. They have the ability to open to allow firefighters to quickly move from one balcony to the next. In the past, firefighters have had to chop their way through which takes more time/energy.

They wont... But they will. We had two rooms next to each other, with kids in each room. They opened ours on our last trip to make it easier to check on the children. We had to go through a guest services manager to make it happen.

Yep, the only reason balcony dividers were made openable in the first place was a SOLAS requirement based on the difficulty the fire teams had during the Star Princess fire. It has nothing to do with guest amenities. And NCL used to leave it up to the Captain's decision as to whether dividers could be opened, within the guidelines of total number opened and number in a row opened, but this led to too many complaints, so they took it out of the Captain's hands and made a corporate "no" decision. Yes, the dividers are wind breaks, and are made of non-combustible material to slow the progress of a fire from one balcony to the next caused by the wind created by the ship moving.

  • 3 weeks later...
we have an 'enclosed balcony-rom8538-ayinehave an idea what that space looks like?-sailing next Friday-the 27thtanks

You have what is called a HULL BALCONY - a balcony with a full steel framework all around and this is

unlike other balconies in which you can lean over and look into your neighbors adjacent balcony.

Picture LINK:

https://www.cruisedeckplans.com/DP/deckplans/Norwegian-Dawn

Click on DECK 8 - find your cabin 8538 port side forward - Click on that and click on PIX 3 - note the steel

framework all around the edge of the photo image.

Advantage to this cabin balcony is better protection from the wind and weather.

Disadvantage taking photos from within the cabin to the outside reduced viewing area.

All things being equal same as any other balcony cabin.

Location forward of the Life Boats so a full unobstructed view.

Take a right turn out your cabin door and quick trip down a few cabins to O'Sheehans.

Get the picture - enjoy the cruise !
