Anyone close to retirement? / when do you start counting the days?

We live in the UK, so we have what is often referred to in the US as 'socialised healthcare'. Its free at the point if use. Whilst working, we pay about 12% of our salaries in 'national insurance', but that is not required when not working (e.g. Homemaker, retiree etc).

Well I'm a teacher from USA and I will have to pay $500 a month for 2 people now and when I retire. At 65 it changes but you still have to pay something. That's not counting $4000 out of pocket expense for each person! And that is not Obama care. Hopefully that doesn't make it worse!!

I officially retired Jan. 2013 my last day was Oct. 31, 2012. We sold everything home, cars, etc. We started traveling on Oct. 31, 2012 then we left the U.S. on Jan. 3, 2013 1st cruise ever, Still going and enjoying traveling and being homeless!

As long as our health & money hold out we will continue! :)

WOW!!!! Is all I can say!!! Enjoy your journey!!

Wow, that's harsh. My understanding of Obama care is that its closer to the British system, so it should help hopefully.

I don't think so. I believe it is for the people who could afford health care but were not paying for it or if they were it didn't cover enough of each sickness or problem. Who knows?? Just one of those things you can't control. The ones who couldn't pay for it before are getting medicaid.....which is free...must be nice...although I do know a lot of those people need it, but it has been proven a lot don't. Ok...off my band wagon and off topic. Enjoy your weekend!!!!:))

Your humps are getting shorter and shorter. I have to stop counting hump days in the summer, but it should be in the teens after that.:)

Congratulations to all on well deserved retirement ! I have 8 years but feel like I want to count down since I think about retirement every day :)

Does anyone know of a good countdown app? Trying to have a good attitude about the time I have left but it's hard when others are leaving and have the freedom to travel when they like. Any suggestions on preparation? Looking forward to the time we can grab a last minute deal and cruise whenever for as long as we can afford it!

Yes, I know how you feel. Most of my friends retired a couple of years ago and all are enjoying it. Someone had an app on here that showed retirement down to seconds, but I don't know who it was. You could scroll back to check it.

There are several. I have three on my iPad (not that I'm keen or anything)! Sleeps (i.e. How many sleeps until). You can customise with your own photo. I have one of us on a cruise (suprise!). Then there is T Zero, a Nasa type countdown (not as personal but gives you the minutes and seconds!). Finally I have Countdown. Its okay and allows personalisation with a thumbnail picture. :D Edited by Priya2

Only 16 more working days for me! The count is really on when it gets this close to the big day. My final working day is May 1 followed by a 2 hour government clearance thing. My daughter is expecting her third child the following week so May will be a great month for me! I am hoping to be able to offer her family more help after the baby comes...she has twin boys who will be 3 towards the end of May.

I have worked hard all of my adult life...starting even before that when I worked my summers when I was attending school. I have a big bucket list of fun things to do...the first one being sleeping in until at least 6 or 7 every morning!

Hope you are all enjoying your countdowns too!

Deb
