so not only do you have to be in a suite, you have to be wiiling to shell out the cash for the cabana.

 

what if the suite people just want to lay in the sand, not in the cabana, do they still have to pay to go in there?

 

The sand and regular beach chairs are free - no charge for admission to the beach.

Your pictures of Barefoot Beach are great! How I love the color of Caribbean water! :) Boy, I've never seen food like that on the regular buffet! ;) It looks Wonderful! :D

We went on The Castaway at Malfini Beach excursion when we were in Labadee last week. Beautiful stretch of beach and there's only 30 tickets sold. There's a tiki bar with about 3 or 4 bartenders who man it. It's a beautiful peaceful place and the service is excellent. Since I've read that Haitian families live on $2 a day we tipped big right from the beginning and had all of our needs met. You get a floating mat and lawnchair as part of the price. This one is available to all passengers aboard on a first come/first served basis. It doesn't cost much and includes one drink. It's a great way to get away from the crowds aboard the ship and the people there make you feel very special. We stopped at the Cafe Promenade before leaving the ship that morning and grabbed a few sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies for a nice picnic lunch and drank tropical drinks out of coconuts while we were there. Had a blast! Remember to tip well and to book early!

Yes, I agree - My DH & I did this same excursion last March and I must say that it was really good. Because there are a limited number of tickets it was very private and felt like you were on your own island - so book early!!

I've been considering the Malfini excursion but wondered if it was worth it. Thanks for your posts about it. Do you pay cash for the drinks there or charge them to your sea pass? You mentioned tips so I wondered if I just need cash for those or to pay for the drinks as well.

 

I was thinking we would be back by noon for the bbq but a picnic sounds fun there.

I am thinking that we paid for our drinks with our sea pass - I'm sure that we tipped with cash. I'm sure that Crusin4xmas can steer you in the right direction - Goodness, is last March so far away that I can't remember?:) - Have a wonderful time.........Susan:)

I did Malfini last April and we also loved it....would do it again in a minute....we did it just for the reason you mention....to get away from the crowds.

I believe we used our seapasses for the drinks after the first free one. We sat up on the ledge by ourselves---we're both smokers so we isolated ourselves for that reason. I tipped $5 after my DH & my 1st free drinks and then when we got our second & third as well. I talked with the bartenders a bit, asked how many children they each had & gave out gold $1 coins for each kid. Gave each bartender a $2 bill. There was a old man there with super long arms that took one of our coconuts and cut it up for us to eat (my request); he also was there to dump our ashtray any time we'd put out a cigarette. He wasn't really a pest, just hungry I think. We gave him $5 and he lit up like a Christmas tree! The Haitians there that we met all spoke a little English and we had fun talking about how they celebrate Christmas on their island. It was one of the best days we had on the cruise!

Is the Castaway @ Malfini Beach offered for purchase ahead of time?

 

I didn't see it on the RCI excursions list for Labadee.

 

There was something called: Haitian Cultural Tour @ Paradise Cove & Beach Break. 3 hrs @ $65.00.

Sounds like a similar excursion.

We bought it ahead of time. The # was ZL12 and it was $65/per person. Try calling RCCL to see if it's still being offered. We just got back from a western Caribbean cruise aboard The Liberty and think it was by far the best excursion offered in Labadee. It included transportation by boat to the beach, a lawnchair, floating mat, and a free rum drink. They set up a little bar there so you can get extra drinks charged to your sea passes but no food is available. We brought a small lunch for each of us from the Cafe Promenade before leaving the ship. Good luck! You're gonna love this one!

Doesn't bother me at all - because I never feel a lower class than anyone else. There are plenty of areas of ship and beach for me to use. If RCI wants to add a few "extras" for those paying premium for their cabins it is a business decision that I can easily live with.

 

It is when they start adding on charges or decreasing quality of food, etc that I get "bothered". ;)

If your worried about hitting an iceburgh then maybe you should get a suite. :rolleyes:

I think that it would bother me more to hit an iceberg in the Caribbean. :D

No, why should it? That's a ridiculous statement about suites getting off first nowadays. You pay for the privilege when you book a suite, these perks are by no means "free". A grand suite usually costs about $1,000 more than a balcony cabin for a 7 day cruise. Does it bother you that people fly in first class and get fed and free drinks? Does it bother you that people in hotel suites get extra perks? That there are concierge levels in hotels? I hate to tell you but the entire world works on the class system on a daily basis. It may not always be visible to you, but geez, if you pay for the privilege, then why not? We don't live in a socialist world and I for one never want to. No one benefits from that except the leadership.

An interesting thought, I cannot remember the last time I saw an iceberg in the Caribbean.

I have occassionally sailed in a suite, but generally have a regular balcony cabin, I have no problem with people who pay considerably more than I do getting extras that refect the payment they have made.

If this means reserved areas, so be it, i have the choice to enjoy the same facilities, but often my choice is not to, because I choose not to spend the extra money. It is no different from people that choose to use the speciality restaurants getting better food, it is a matter of choice.:D
