I am waiting for the"its in the cruise contract that fires happen and we may be dead in the water but no refunds" people to show up.:)

It's in the cruise contract that fires happen and we may be dead in the water but no refunds!

Actually, I would think Carnival would at least refund the cost of the cruise. The passengers didn't get what they bargained for. This isn't like missing a port due to a storm.

And I think Carnival should think about 50% off their next cruise in addition to the full refund.

Just spoke with Carnival, rep said that they still have her sailing on 14th and 20th (officially at least) so it would not appear that any sort of evaluation has been done to cancel cruises. We have 8 on the 1/9/11 sailing so I will be watching this close.

The best news is that there have been no injuries! That is a blessing. Having watched all the A&E or Travel channel specials on cruise ship makeovers, I can't imaging they will be out over a month. It will be interesting to watch this play out!

After dealing with the Swine Flu cruise on the Splendor I have no doubts that Carnival will do everything it can to make this right. While they were slow in their reaction at the time this is a completely different situation. I feel for every passenger on this sailing and pray that the sailing back to where ever they end up taking them is uneventful.

Update on Carnival Splendor

Posted on 08 November 2010

Miami, FL — November 8, 2010 (9 pm EST) — At approximately 6 am this morning (U.S. Pacific Standard Time), a fire was detected in the aft engine room aboard the cruise ship Carnival Splendor. The fire has been extinguished. There were no injuries to guests or crew.

The ship has been operating on auxiliary generators throughout the day and engineers have been unable to restore additional power to the vessel. As a result, the current voyage is being terminated. Tugboats are currently en route to the ship which is located off the coast of Mexico, approximately 150 miles south of San Diego. The tugs will tow the vessel to Ensenada, Mexico in an effort to get the guests home as quickly as possible.

Currently several key hotel systems, including air conditioning, hot food service, flushing toilets and telephones are not available. The ship’s crew is actively working to restore partial services.

Regular announcements apprising guests of the situation began at approximately 6.30 am. Guests were initially asked to move from their cabins to the ship’s upper open deck areas. At this time, guests have access to their cabins and are able to move about the ship. Bottled water and cold food items are being provided.

The vessel’s command is in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard which has deployed aircraft and cutters to the cruise ship’s location.

Guests on the current voyage will be receiving a full refund along with reimbursement for transportation costs. Additionally, they will receive a complimentary future cruise equal to the amount paid for this voyage.

“We know this has been an extremely trying situation for our guests and we sincerely thank them for their patience. Conditions on board the ship are very challenging and we sincerely apologize for the discomfort and inconvenience our guests are currently enduring. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority and we are working to get our guests home as quickly as possible,” said Gerry Cahill, president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines.

Carnival Splendor was on the first leg of a seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise that departed yesterday, Nov. 7, from Long Beach, Calif. Today was a scheduled day at sea. The ship’s normal itinerary includes stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The ship, which measures 113,000 gross registered tons and first entered service in July 2008, is carrying 3,299 guests and 1167 crew.

You probably spoke to a PVP or a reservations agent. They have less than no idea what is going on, and should NOT be considered Carnival representatives. The fact that cruises have not been pulled from inventory means nothing.

IF, as report above the fire has flared up again, this is a MAJOR problem and this ship could be out of service for months. I would not count on being on board in the next 60 days and 90 - 120 days is probably a more realistic time frame.

I bet that is old data from earlier today.

I definitely wouldn't count on speculation by back seat cruisers as to the extent of damage or how long it might take to repair.

I hope everyone is okay. Very scary situation.

The cynic in me is thinking of the people trying to line up at the purser's desk asking for a full refund and a free sailing.

According to the news, that is exactly what they will be getting - maybe no line!!!???

Looks like the guest will have a long tired ride home

I'm sure John was meaning people with strange names he calls on in the audience, people being left behind, and bizarre people he meets on board.

I was on the Oct 24 sailing and all the above happened or partially staged, still not sure on that. It was my favorite recent cruise. First one in the mid eighties was a bit better but with inflation figured in about four to five times as much.

Glad all are safe and hope she gets back up and running. I may go on her again in the not to distant future. Also if anyone can keep it light it is John. So far my favorite CD.

I was also on the same cruise as you. We had a wonderful time too. I feel for all the passengers on this cruise having their vacations messed up. It's such a shame when you plan and look froward to your vacation and something like this happens. I also feel for all the crew members having to deal with this situation.

Does anyone know how long ships go into dry dock for after a fire engine? My wedding is 40 days from today...on board the Splendor. We booked an on board wedding so there would be no missed ports in case of bad weather or something. I don't have a plan B. I called Carnival and they had very little information or direction for me to go in. I can understand as I'm sure they aren't sure what is going on the ship and don't have any answers yet. Any ideas on how much time before they start cancelling/postponing cruises? As a previous poster said, they have pulled the next to cruises off the carnival website. I'm happy that no injuries have been reported, but I'm going to play the anxious/nervous bride card as this has been a long time in planning

Please tell me that you have cruise insurance and that you have spoken to your wedding coordinator regarding possible alternative plans.

I wish you all the best, my daughter and more recently, my sister, were married on cruise ships...Oosterdam and Oasis.

I would call/email the wedding coordinator every day until you get something in writing regarding the possibilit of a cancelled cruise.

Again, wishing you all the best.........
