Note: To Chair Hogs

Recommended Posts

what would really help for me would be if they could get some shade up on the top deck. i don't really care if i am near the pool but we just want some shade, a breeze, a view and a bar. the solarium is small and stuffy for lack of breeze and the upper deck is a melanoma factory.

That is certainly understandable, I've seen such places on the ships I've been on, but they probably go fast. I've thinking of on the outside of the promenade on the Freedom and Voyager class ships, and it looks like a few on the running deck ends of the Oasis class (from pictures, I'll see first hand soon enough) and the back of the ship on Majesty at many times of the day.

Wow - you people should relax, you are on vacation!!! why get so stressed?

So what if someone puts their things on a lounge chair in the morning, there are always enough chairs available. Have you ever been to any hotel in the Caribbean or Mexico? that is what people do! Who came up with this term "Chair Hog" on this thread, it's ridiculous.

I can imagine some of you posters here walking around the ship looking for violaters instead of enjoying themselves. You are the same ones that will complain about noise coming from the disco after 10PM.

The problem is this: chairs are not always available because of selfish and self-centered people like you who think the rules are for everyone else but you.

Not really sure what the problem is. If somewants to leave there things on a chair unattended that is up to them. At the same time if you leave things laying around unattended don't expect them to be there when you get back.

I suspect those that leaave items on chairs unattended are the same ones out would leave the cabin door wide open.

One of the many many many reasons why I have just booked a condo for my next vacation.

1) No chair hogs by our pool, if i want to hog the chair I can!!

2) If I want to play bartender and smuggle some booze into the condo, I can do so.

3) If I want to see a show, I can buy an assigned seat.

4) Do not have to worry about missing the ship.

5) No worries about smokers or lack of smokers.

6) Can clean all crevices of my body in the shower.

7) No missed ports.

8) Food quality isn't good, I can either cook in the condo, or find another place to eat.

9) No dress code police.

10) Bedroom bigger then my bathroom at home and certainly bigger then a cabin.

11) No casino calling my name from 3 decks down. Cha Ching!

12) No cattle herd....lines to check in....lines to get on ship....lines at elevator...lines to get in buffet...lines to get into dinner.....lines to get off the ship....lines to get on tender...lines to get back on ship...lines at purser desk...lines to get in show....lines to muster drill....lines, lines lines.

13) If I want lobster I will pay, happily, for a true lobster...not some crustation playing a lobster.

14) More port time!!

16) No more overplayed, corny ship jokes from the CD

15) No foul smell that I have smelled on every ship. Some worse the others, some lasted longer then others.....but the raw sewage smell will not be missed.

16) I could go on....................

No, chairs aren't always available -- especially if two people want chairs together. And the whole reason is people with attitudes like yours, people who believe "that's what people do". It's what rude people do.

We thought of this idea... where are you going?

We are going to Playa Del Carmen. From what I have heard and read, it is a great little town that is safe, and not as "Americanized" as Cancun. We have plans to head over to Cozumel for 1 day. Another trip south of Playa for a day.

Don't get me wrong, I will probably cruise again, just wanted to try something we haven't done and get to know a place a little more then a quick stop on a ship allows.

You will love Playa Del Carmen we have stayed at Playa right next to Playa del carmen wife walked to town every morning and felt real safe. Our son got married on the beach at the RIU Playacar 3 years ago great little place. We just got back from Jamaica last week it was great all so I guess any AI resort is great in my opinion. But have only cruised once and did love it to so we are going on the Allure in Nov. to see if I still Love it:D

Don't be so sure you won't run into chair hogs, I was watching a TV talk show and Jamie Lee Curtis was staying in a resort near there. Her friend "reserved" their chairs for the day at 7am, and she was distraught that the resort people had removed their stuff as it wasn't there when they went out at noon. They were so upset because they thought their stuff was stolen.

Here is where I have a quasi-issue, just quasi! lol It is tough to NOT save some seats for shows. Sometimes, DH and I will get there earlier then our kids and we're saving 2 seats with us for them- or vice versa. I dont see anything wrong with it. If someone is saving a dozen seats, well thats another story, but family likes to sit with eachother and some mioght be coming from different places on the ship...

I hear ya. Another option would be to wait at the entrance to the theater for the entire party to arrive and then go find a seat ....... but I agree, a seat ot two shouldn't be a huge issue -- a row is.

saraet4464 -- didn't mean to insinuate that you were a "row hog" , just thought the transition to another CC "hot topic" was interesting.

I think it's the people who wear shorts and tee-shirts on formal night that are hogging all of the chairs and rows.

Correct. There are not enough chairs for every single person on the ship. If you do not use it, you lose it. Going to have lunch or ice cream is a different story. Chair Hogs are people who come down early and think they are "reserving their chair" for the day by putting their towel on it and then go back to their cabin to sleep. You do not have a chair to reserve. There is no such thing. And it also happened to me at resorts in Acapulco and Cancun. We went down to the pool around 10 am and ALL the chairs had towels on it with the backs down!! We had to go all the way around the side far from the pool and those chairs stayed empty until way after lunchtime. It is absolutely NOT FAIR! You don't "own" the chair. People feel they are entitled to it and don't have any consideration whatsoever for anyone else. That's just plain selfish:(

I just have a question, how do you know if a chair is being "hogged"? What if we are REALLY in the pool? I will have to put my stuff somewhere? I think it is unfair to make someone sit all day with the stuff just so it doesn't get taken? Or are you guys only talking about the people who come super early in the morning and "claim" the chairs? This was a big topic on all of the disney boards as well...really I am not trying to get flamed but I have to stick my towels and sunscreen somewhere...usually while on vacation we may put our stuff on 1 or 2 chairs(the kids don t really need a chair) and go in the pool, is this not done on the ships:confused:

This was clarified for me earlier. I had the same question even though I already knew the answer. I just wanted it clarified. If you see the towel neatly folded and the back of the chair down, 9 times out of 10 it's being "hogged". Chairs being used look "used" I mean you do need to go to the restroom occasionally :p I saw two chairs like that next to each other while I walked around the pool looking for a chair and finally gave up and took the towel off one and put it on the other. A woman at a side chair started yelling that it was her chair. How many chairs can a person have? She was saving it for two other people. Sorry. No saving. Now I'm sure some "hogs" reading this will start messing up the towels they leave on the chairs and not put the chair back down

I watched a TV show the other day where passengers were on the QE2 in the early 80s and the sign behind them on deck said to contact the Purser if you want to reserve a deck chair and they would charge the fee to your cabin!! Can you imagine what that would be like today? I might actually get to sit by the pool for once, or at least near it!!

It's all about how long your stuff is left unattended, no matter where you are (in the pool, in the WJ, in the restroom). If it's maybe up to 30 minutes, then it's probably OK. Any more than that, and you are considered by many to be a CHog.:D

I think a lot of people split time between the chairs and the pool. When I'm doing that I generally keep an eye on my chair(s) while in the pool so if anybody thinks its unoccupied I'll speak up. But its usually my wife and I and both chairs would usually never be unoccupied by at least one of us for more than 15 minutes. After 2 hours of this max, we pick up and take our stuff with us and find new chairs if we come back after eating or some other activity.

I have heard that RCL are going to try a new scheme to stop 'chair hoggin'

They are going to have a crew member going around with a camcorder taking pictures of passengers sitting around the pool area. When they have positively identified a chair hogger it will be broadcast on the Morning tv slot naming and shaming !!!...:)

Will your picture be there ? lol:D Keep watching out for that camera, they might not be wearing uniform either !!!:D

This was commom in the early days of crusing. My first cruise in the late 60's we paid for our chairs and were good for the entire week.

I wonder if anyone has heard or know of RCL policy that limits passengers to only 1/2 hour by the pool. This happened to me on this past August Brilliance Med cruise. I was sunning and minding my own business for about 2-3 hrs, when a pool attendant told me that I need to move because of the 1/2 hr. rule so as to give other passengers the opportunity to enjoy sitting by the pool.

What got me annoyed and irate :(:(was that my seat location was some 3-4 rows froom the pool and not what you would call a premium seat. The other was that for the duration of my stay, there were 4 chairs next to me with towels on them and never occupied during my entire stay. I told him to concentrate on the empty chairs and not bother the occupied ones.

I wrote this episode in the Guest Survey, but never heard from anyone from RCL. I don't even know if they read them as I've never received any feedback.

It is quite simple. You get a chair. You sit in it. You go in the pool and leave your stuff on the chair. Do NOT leave the chair unoccupied for more than one half hour. So, after 20 minutes in the pool, go back and sit in your chair for a bit. Go back into the pool again for 20 minutes. Go back and sit in your chair for a bit. Get up, go to the bar for a bit. Go back to your chair and sit in it.

The chair should NEVER be unoccupied for more than 30 minutes.

On my next cruise I'm not packing anything to read. I'm getting up in the morning to borrow something from the pool chairs. I will return it to the lost and found at the end of our cruise. Thanks in advance for sharing:D.

Thats hilarious! I just spend close to 5 figures on our Oasis cruise for the family of 4. Couldnt find a d*mn chair any day at sea. I would be willing to pay a little extra per person just to have some chair police presence!
