I never thought of doing that! Great idea, I can order some flavored coffees if they sell them. I don't like the flavored creamers because they are sweet and I like sugar in my tea but not in my coffee.

DH & I are self-professed coffee snobs. :D As soon as I found out about the Lavazza machines, I searched the internet on it. I know some of their coffee they sell in "bags" as well - so I may try a few over the next few months to see which we like the best and just then order to take with us.

Since we don't have to fly, we don't have to worry about extra stuff in the luggage - I don't know if packing space is an issue for you.

We are flying but I'll make room for good coffee anytime. I looked around and on some sites it looked like you needed to know the model of the machine. I did see the expresso pods though!

I think when we looked - we compared pictures of the machine on the site and some from the suite pictures someone posted.

Hopefully someone who has sailed recently can give us an update on that point?

We like to have espresso and Grand Marnier to relax - so having the machine is a bonus for us since I won't have to run and get espresso all the time (DH has some mobility issues - and every little bit of less running I have to do is a very good thing for me).

We're sailing on the Pearl in January 2012 and have booked one of the Garden Villa Suites -- 14500. As I have done reading about the suite offerings that have been generously posted by past NCL suite users, particularly the GV suites -- I read a couple of things that I have questions about. Perhaps someone who has sailed more recently can answer for us:

  • Embarking - it has been said that you are escorted directly to your suite. There was no boarding time connected with the comment. Is this still the practice - assuming one arrives at the pier around noon? We arrived around noon on the Dawn and were taken on as soon as boarding was allowed
  • Disembarking - NCL has the concierge escort you as far as the port permits. Still the practice? Happened for us
  • Free limo to airport is provided. Since I am traveling with my Florida siblings, we will drive and park off the cruise port grounds. I wonder if the limo would drive us to our car? Ask the concierge, we live in NY and when I called NCL they said we couldn't be taken home although the commute would be shorter than if we were at the airport. Anoop our concierge said the car would most certainly take us home and it did, we actually used 2 cars one for us and one for our luggage:)
  • Dining - it is said that suite passengers have access to Cagney’s at no charge for breakfast and lunch. Is this still the practice? Most definitely one of the best perks of the suite
  • Dining - it is said that GV suite passengers are provided dinner at one of specialty restaurants for one dinner. Is this still the practice? We had Teppanyaki
  • I assume that if we wish to invite non-suite guests to our GV during the cruise that we could make arrangements for that through the concierge or butler. Can anyone confirm that? We had a little get together and had food served from the butler

Those are my questions. I will greatly appreciate any and all information you may be able to provide. It will help with our planning and understanding of what to expect. Thanks!

Enjoy we were upsold to the GV and now keep trying to figure out how to get back.

-Michelle

On the coffee - since I have no idea about these machines - do they also have espresso pods?

Any input is appreciated as DH & I LOVE coffee/espresso and, if they do not supply these, I'll try to order some before we go on the Gem.

Thanks so much!

(Gosh, I haven't been this excited for a cruise in the longest time!!!) :D

They had the expresso pods the last 2 times we cruised on the Dawn. Ask and you shall receive. :D

We'll be in an Owners Suite on the Dawn. Does anyone know what alcohol we can chose from for our 3 bottles?

There will be a list in your suite when you board. It is usually a short list (one or two choices of Gin, Vodka, Whisky, etc.) and they say no substitutions some have reported they were able to substitute and others that they could not. Your butler will get your bottles and deliver them to you suite.

Yes, it's really French! In our DOS on the Star this Spring it was a half bottle of Dom Pérignon Brut.

.

valleyvilliage,

What cabin were you in? We are sailing in 12502 this week and wondered what you thought of the "new" DOS on the Star.

The Lavazza has two options of how to make you beverage, regular size or half size, there are little "expresso type" cups for the half size amount and regular cups for the full size dispensed.

Right - there were two different buttons - use one for the regular cup of coffee or the other for double strength.

They are nice. We just got back from 12002 this past weekend which is mirror image of 12502. A bit of creaking in the room when ship moves in rougher water.

The one thing I hadn't seen in any of the pictures is there is a little alcove that is right outside the middle suite and the side suite - kind of like a very little foyer.

I put together a thread a few weeks ago (located in the Carnival forum) which compares suite amenities across a few mainstream lines, including NCL.

If anyone is interested in comparing those - have a look HERE! In my signature, you'll also find links to other comparison threads. NCL seems to be near the top of the heap!

As far as suite amenities go, my vote goes to NCL - having sailed in several suites on Celebrity and Carnival as well.

Tom

Wow, this list makes me even more excited for our first cruise on NCL!! Tom, you eeren't kidding, NCL definitely appreciates their Suite customers.

I've had a busy busy year at work and earned myself some extra money and accumulated a LOT of PTO so the husband and I decided to cruise the Western Carib. on NCL.

We looked at the suites and it was twice as much pp than a balcony or mini suite so we decided we didn't need the perks.

But now looking at this, I sort of want them and we have the money.

aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggghhhhh can't decide!

Also, he was leaning towards the mini-suite rather than the balcony b/c he is not a small man and likes the idea of the tub vs. shower. To me it doesn't seem worth it but I think the price difference between balcony and mini suite is only $100 so he can have his larger bathroom for that.

But all those suite perks are making me reconsider.

Thanks for the information. Also, was there a Bose system in the room? We had one on the Gem and loved it for our iPod.

Thanks!

I think it was only hard liquor but I think I have read that some have had wine substituted. Ask your butler they will try to make you happy.

There will also be a bottle of Champagne in the suite the first day.

Yes there was. It had the separate attachment to hook up an IPod. It was on top of the dvd player next to the coffee machine. The bedroom also had a dvd player.

I'm 95% sure there was last week on the Star. There were a few items like that (wine and or sparking wine) at the very bottom of the list but I glanced over them very quickly.

Thanks again. Just a couple more questions. Did you have to close the curtains at night for the bridge? We ran into this on the Gem in the Owner's Suite. How was the bathroom layout?

No, but the steward "unleashed" the curtains at night so they were typically closed anyway. You'll see when you get in the room what I mean. We had the ones in the living room open a bit and never had a call.

The bathroom was the first room on the left as you came in the door (your room will be opposite directions). Light switches just inside cabin door. Inside bathroom straight ahead was jet tub, sinks to right, toilet stall far left with shower between toilet and tub. Two sets of hooks on back of door and two closer to toilet. Couple drawers on right of sink below counter with 3? shelves above sink counter. Cotton balls and qtips. Sea salts for tub. Elemis products. Loofa.

Hmmmm....tough call.....we had a mini-suite on the Jewel last year, the extra space was nice....and for $100 difference, I would book it in a heart beat ....I've booked a family suite on the Dawn for next May...there are 4 of us (girls cruise) in this cabin, which made it 'oh so affordable' for each of us....but, if it were just 2 (hubby & I), it would be pretty pricey by our standards....(and much more than we need for 2 people)

At the end of September, we are booked in a Vista Suite on Carnival....this is a 2 room suite with a wrap around balcony on the back corner of the ship....we got it for 8 nights @ $1089pp, which is quite a nice price for this cabin....however, Carnival does not offer the amenities that NCL does....

I thought if you left the living room curtains open there would not be a problem with the bridge-just the front facing window. ( I am hoping)..
