Here's a You Tube video of Century earlier this month rescuing the passengers of a sail boat that had sent out a distress signal. Century diverted a couple of hundred miles or so and got to them in twelve hours. Great job done!

Great video! Those profane comments on you tube are quite ridiculous....

 

I was on this cruise and have to say that the crew was amazing during the rescue! When we had our goodbye wave/crew talent show, Capt Patsoulas recognized those who participated in the rescue and they received quite the standing ovation.

 

This was my first Century cruise (I was a die-hard Mercury fan!) but I have to say I now have a great attachment to Century. Her crew was top-notch and the service seamless from beginning to end.

I didn't read the comments on the YouTube link and am kind of sorry for that because I probably wouldn't have posted it. Hopefully though the story is of interest to many here.

 

I remember listening to a radio show which talked of of non-moderated and anonymous internet chat and human nature which will always take it to the lowest level. This example certainly reinforces the point.

Wonderful footage and story. Congratulations to Celebrity for their willingness to help those in need.

 

I am surprised that there were no security folks clearly visible....just in case, but my bet/hope is that they were there and armed. There's too much bad stuff going on in the world to be as trusting as we all would like to be. One would be very wary of doing that type of rescue off the coast of somalia, right??

I would be interested to know if Maritime Law of any kind states whether a Mayday or PanPan call can be ignored. Could Century ignore a direction from the Coast Guard or was it under obligation?

 

I have cruised down the Somalia coast onboard Azamara and was told in fact that there were no guns on board. However, we were escorted by a military vessel and did have an intelligence officer on board. Our only 'ammunition' was the fire hoses that would flood any fish boats that came too close for comfort. Other safety measures were in place ...(Safe Haven drill, black-out, full speed ahead).

I worked in military communications for a lot of years and you cannot ignore a Mayday call. Worked numerous radio circuits for search and rescue planes over the years. On receipt of a Mayday call they will divert all available marine traffic etc. to the area to begin a search.

Think along the lines of the Titanic which was the first major ship to use SOS on Morse Code and the nearest ship I believe was the Carpathia which came from a fair distance on receiving the call.

 

As for a PanPan Im not so sure. A Panpan refers to a state of urgency but not emergency and that immediate help is not necessarily required. It might be used for say planes experience engine issues or the same for shipping etc.

Great video -- We were on the Century last month and it was cool to recognize several crew members in the video.

 

I read an unhappy review of the Oct 2nd Century cruise. They mentioned missing a port, I suppose this was why.

Wow.... what an amazing rescue!

It's good to know that the crew are so efficient, and well-versed in these situations!

Apparently, 15 or so passengers were unhappy at the 'inconvenience' they were put through.....I just hope they are never put in a life-or-death situation, and have to worry about 'other people being inconvenienced!'

I'm very happy that the crew of the sailboat are ok, and hope the injured party has made a full recovery.

Spent a lot of time blue water cruising on small boats sailing mainly the Caribbean and have heard several "rescued / assisted by cruise ship" stories.

 

Just glad I've never been one of the stories. :p

Great video and work by Celebrity Crew. I was wondering about what would happen to the yacht. The newspaper article states that the yacht becomes property of whoever finds it. Interesting story.

 

I'm a sailor, not a lawyer, but the rules of salvage are quite clear and finding an abandoned boat doesn't make it yours.

 

A salvager (??? salvage dude) is due a fair price for salvaging and not the vessel itself.

 

Maybe a law type could chirp in here.
