The Pride: What REALLY happened...

Thank you for the video and the pictures! They reminded me of my 2002 cruise on the Volendam crossing the northern Pacific. We ran into storms much like what the Pride experienced.

One thing I have never understood was how there could be water damage to the show lounge. The Volendam as well as the Rotterdam who also experienced a similiar storm had water damage to their show lounges which, like the Taj Mahal Lounge, is in the forward part of the ship. On the Volendam, the crew was doing repairs on a variety of mechanical systems because of water intrusion for much of the rest of the voyage. On the Rotterdam, I was told, there was a mini-waterfall from the balcony to the main floor. How did the water get into a vessel that was "buttoned-up tight"--which we were? And, I am sure the Pride was as well.

We were on this cruise as well. We were on the 6th floor Aft balcony. It was quite a ride! I just can't imagine how older people or parents with little ones were doing. There was no way you could have really been walking around. It was hard enough to get up to go to the bathroom. We had a glass break and the tv nearly fell off. My husband kept jumping up to push it back. We had to have someone come in to vacuum the broken glass at about 7am. Any damages outside our cabin were very quickly cleaned up. There really weren't too many signs of damage. You could tell it was an unusual event because the crew were all talking and looking out the windows. I talked to a couple of the dancers that said the show the night before was canceled obviously for their safety. They said not so much onstage, but backstage where the props were moving around. Also they said the Taj Mahal was closed because the power was out. They had to work the bingo that morning in the Starry Night bar instead. I can't imagine getting up to go play bingo during that! When we got off the customs guy said he heard the swells were 35 - 45 feet high. It was definitely memorable!

There's openings in the front of the ship on the sides and such where you tie down. The lounges in Spirit ships are very low in the boat, decks 1/2. I'm actually surprised that the Butterfly lounge, secondary lounge on deck 1 (second floor) wasn't turned into a swamp. :D

Like you, I am surprised that the Buttefly Lounge was not affected when the lounge on the deck above was.

I would think that there would be watertight doors separating the deck where the lines are handled and the forward part of the ship. That is why I can't figure out how the water was getting in.

This was my 13th Carnival Cruise, and I thought it was bad luck taking my 13th over Halloween.......

There have been comments on other threads, some true, some not true, but here is my rendition. I was up and around a lot during the storm.

I WAS a wild ride. Some crew members had not experienced a storm like this in many years...or ever.

There are always people experiencing sea sickness on any cruise. Of course, this one had way more people experiencing this, but I was surprised how many people were out actually having a great time trying to 'hang on' or talk to strangers about the experience.

As much as the ship was bobbing like a cork, there was very little damage. Most of the damage was breaking plates etc in the kitchens, or in the dining areas as all of the sudden it would feel like we hit a speed bump. Some of the glass souvenirs in the shops were damaged. The stores were NOT trashed, not damaged. Many of the displays in the display cases fell over, but nothing damaged.

The odd light fixture fell from the ceiling, but I could not see any broken glass anywhere.

The lounge was closed. I asked what the damage was, and I was told that there was water damage that they were cleaning up. You could not access the TaJ Mahal lounge or the Sunset Garden.

The casino was not flooded. It may have experienced some minor water, but no way flooded.

I heard of nobody mentioning fire or smoke. Not sure where that came from, as I only heard of that reading some of the threads. No crew mentioned that, no smell of smoke, no fire alarm.

The Captain and crew were great. Sure, there could have been more communication....but why worry the guests? What would we plan for? If they said to prepare for TV's falling down there would be a lot of panic and unnecessary hysteria. The CD made a bunch of announcements, and the Captain came on a few times.

CCL made free phone calls from the ship available to everyone.......FREE....

And of course, there were people 'pissed' at CCL for the delay.... I tried to listen in on some conversations.....to find out at what exactly they were so angry at CCL about:confused:

But yes, I too was disappointed with Carnival. They ran out of Hot Chocolate on Sunday in most of their machines.

Here are some pictures, and a Youtube flick.

Swells...woa

Awesome spray.....this is ALL spray....

The 'bending' actually popped a hinge in the dining room

I am glad everyone is safe. We came back through a Noreaster a few years ago and it was alot like that. Many people were sea sick. The dining room got more and more empty as we traveled up the coastline.

I have had some very interesting experiences on the Pride on the last few cruises. We went through a gulf stream and it was quite eerie to look out the windows and see steam rising from the water. Last year we actually had snow fall on the ship while we were out at sea.

There were a couple balls rolling around, but the atrium elevators were shut down, so I could not tell...

That made me chuckle.

Great recounting of your experience. We are on the pride in a few weeks. I'm calling the doc tomorrow for patches. Wow. Just wow.

No they did not. Probably did not want to 'freak out' the general public....

However, I estimated the swells to be in excess of 30 feet at times, and even higher when the bow went right down and 'rocked' the ship.

On one of these threads I read the swells were up to 45 to 50 feet at times. That's not a swell to me - that's a wall of water!

I was on a cruise that did not manage to sail around the tropical storm as the captain intended. 40 foot waves, it was really bad.

I was confused at first, but now I get it. The Pride was due in Sun morning to Baltimore? So probably tough to sail around a storm that was so close to land. I got off the Destiny in Miami on Sat, and we never felt anything, but if the storm was up off the Eastern seaboard, that explains it.

Count me in as one of the "Wheee....can we do that again?" ship riders. Also love all roller coasters.

Glad nobody was hurt.

Wow! that was the Nor'easter that passed off the VA Beach coast Friday night. We had 30' + seas off the Va Capes Oct. 20th on Eurodam and were only 2 hours late going into Ft. Lauderdale but the Captain did give free internet and phone calls all day before disembarkation. (36 hrs of storm)

Devil for punishment we will try it again in December on board Sillhouette from Bayonne, calm seas are OK with me, did anyone feel as though they had ridden a horse? It took 2 days to get rid of the achy inner thigh pain. (Balancing) Thanks for the great pics, why don't they empty the pool? On HAL it's the road to the Lido, it took them at least 12 hours of mopping before they saw the light! or dry.

Going thru the postings even as I type. Things were a bit rough on Oct 29th, mainly heavy winds, but the seas weren't nothing like what your video shows. Did they have those "Strong Winds" signs posted on doors, especially on deck 3? I can't imagine anyone being fool enough to go out on deck on 3 with that sort of waves and all the sea spray flying around (if it were just the spray, I could understand).

Wow great pics and video. Hope the current group of cruisers on the Pride are ready. Tropical Storm Sean is heading straight for Bermuda.

Boo to that. I hope they can get away from it. Someone from my Alaska roll call is on that sailing. :( I know the Bermuda port day is important, especially since it is down to 1 day now instead of 2. But how much fun can it be in terrible storm.
