The Pride: What REALLY happened...

OK I know I am the minority here but that looks like so much fun!!

Of course on a cruise I love nice weather but, if it is going to be cruddy out the bigger and badder the storm the more exciting it is to me!

Same goes on land, the wilder the better!:)

You are, but I am there with you. :D. My husband and I took the ferry from Cozumel to the mainland some years back. The seas were fairly rough for that size of a vessel. I would have had a great time but the sound of others being sick really gets to me. Let's just say that not many on that ferry shared our opinion of big waves!

It's funny how people will pay money for the wildest of rides at a theme park but turbulence in an airplane or rough seas on a ship will cause any number of complaints;). Thanks for sharing!

imagine going on a roller coaster for 12 hours!

actually, last year i went to a local amusement park that advertised their hours incorrectly on their first weekday of the season after school was out.

the place was empty, so we could go on any ride as many times as we wanted without waiting.

i eventually cried uncle to my kids, and they continued without me.... :(

My first ship was a flat bottomed LST so BTDT for weeks at a time:D. Give me rough seas over any type of carnival ride (except maybe the Ferris Wheel) any day.

This was my 13th Carnival Cruise, and I thought it was bad luck taking my 13th over Halloween.......

There have been comments on other threads, some true, some not true, but here is my rendition. I was up and around a lot during the storm.

I WAS a wild ride. Some crew members had not experienced a storm like this in many years...or ever.

There are always people experiencing sea sickness on any cruise. Of course, this one had way more people experiencing this, but I was surprised how many people were out actually having a great time trying to 'hang on' or talk to strangers about the experience.

As much as the ship was bobbing like a cork, there was very little damage. Most of the damage was breaking plates etc in the kitchens, or in the dining areas as all of the sudden it would feel like we hit a speed bump. Some of the glass souvenirs in the shops were damaged. The stores were NOT trashed, not damaged. Many of the displays in the display cases fell over, but nothing damaged.

The odd light fixture fell from the ceiling, but I could not see any broken glass anywhere.

The lounge was closed. I asked what the damage was, and I was told that there was water damage that they were cleaning up. You could not access the TaJ Mahal lounge or the Sunset Garden.

The casino was not flooded. It may have experienced some minor water, but no way flooded.

I heard of nobody mentioning fire or smoke. Not sure where that came from, as I only heard of that reading some of the threads. No crew mentioned that, no smell of smoke, no fire alarm.

The Captain and crew were great. Sure, there could have been more communication....but why worry the guests? What would we plan for? If they said to prepare for TV's falling down there would be a lot of panic and unnecessary hysteria. The CD made a bunch of announcements, and the Captain came on a few times.

CCL made free phone calls from the ship available to everyone.......FREE....

And of course, there were people 'pissed' at CCL for the delay.... I tried to listen in on some conversations.....to find out at what exactly they were so angry at CCL about

But yes, I too was disappointed with Carnival. They ran out of Hot Chocolate on Sunday in most of their machines.

Here are some pictures, and a Youtube flick.

Swells...woa

Awesome spray.....this is ALL spray....

The 'bending' actually popped a hinge in the dining room

OMG  I would have FREAKED out lol. My husband would love that though. Where exactly was your cruise ship sailing to? Was it like this when you guys left port? Wa sanyone in your party sea sick? I wonder if Meclizine covers the seasickness of this sort of thing, or if pretty much does nothing to you in this huge a storm????

Nice to see a good attitude about this sort of thing around here though....too many complainy whine-os lol

just watched the video. Reminds me of our Alaskan cruise. Crossing the Gulf of Alaska, we were in a similar storm. The winds were 75 knts, and the seas were very rough. To us, it wan't fun, but we never felt in any danger. It is definately an expierience you will not soon forget.

Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience - and not even "in hurricane season"! I guess it just goes to show that mother nature has her own agenda and doesn't adhere to human schedules.

Glad nobody was hurt and that you had a good time in spite of it all.

Halloween is hurricane season...:)

It doesn't end until the end of November...

Glad everyone was safe and sound..I read on JH's facebook that there wasn't any water damage and a few other things he cleared up....I think that would have thrown me for a loop and I would have been quiet nervous...

I agree with you. I am the type that cheers when a thunder storm is going on...bigger, louder the better :p

I will show my husband and son the video. We are going on the Pride in April :D

OP glad you all made it back safe and sound.

We were traveling back to Baltimore from Freeport.

The Captain he changed direction to miss the storm as much as he could, but the storm changed directions and we were in the middle of it.

Only one person in my group of 5 were sick. The rest of us had a blast....

Hurricane Season runs through Nov. 30th, and the Atlantic side is much more active than the carribbean in Oct./Nov.

No they did not. Probably did not want to 'freak out' the general public....

However, I estimated the swells to be in excess of 30 feet at times, and even higher when the bow went right down and 'rocked' the ship.

Wow!! That storm must have had Capt. Gulotta's name on it...seems like mother nature was determined to meet her match with Capt. Gulotta! We sailed with him on the Pride last December...Very nice, mature guy with incredible good looks and many years of experience...I'm sure you were in good hands (his and God's) He and the Pride handled that storm with what sounds like, great skill and authority. Glad you all were kept safe and the damages were few. Hope you had a good cruise all things considered.:) Thanks for the pics, video and the update!
